So I gave SOF a good run last night. The controls took some getting used to but
I blasted terrorists until I was blocked by a cheap "must hit that hard jump"
spot in the Balkans.
Disarming people is sure graphic in this game ;) Dislegging too.
I drank lots of tea during the load times but the game threw you back in
action soon enough without tired briefing screens.
Other than the jump I found the game a little dark for my tastes. I guess
that is why they have night vision... Still I wonder why people make all these
pretty models and walls and then turn out the lights so no one will ever see
them. Perhaps this is why I like the arcade-y brighness of all my old games
to my friend's expensive, dim new releases...
Fav area so far- the subway- nice linear, satisfying blasting is fun
old school!

I'm sure you can find the gold PC version in a bargain bin somewhere for 5 dollars or so

The game is dark...but it shouldn't be so dark that you can't see textures and whatnot, so you might want to take a look into the brightness settings in the game(if it has one built in) or the TV. :)

I remember jumping on that game...you have to use "up" on the digital pad right? Yeah, there just wasn't enough buttons on the DC's pad for everything you *had* to have in the game, do you go weird stuff like that. All in all, once you get used to it, it's not bad...

I liked the Subway as well, Gen and I always used to make fun of the way Hawk and John run in the cinematics. ;) Also, the way they changed the sound of John reloading the shotgun, for some reason, makes it sound like he's *pouring* liquid shells into the damn gun...it's funny. ;)

LC is right, SoF Gold/Platinum is usually $5 or less at most EB games and whatnot. I bought it(Plat) *before* I even owned a PC(as it wasn't out on the DC at the time), and played it on the girlfriend's P3...

Oh, speaking of SoF, did you ever see my gif I did for the front page...but later abandoned because it was just way too big?

I never played the sequel on PC, but I heard it wasn't very good, but I'm sure it's in a bargain bin somwhere by now as well.

That game is a survivalists's wet dream, carrying around so many different types of guns and ammo at the same time. I used to wonder about that with doom, how a guy could carry a chainsaw, pistol, shotgun, minigun, rocket launcher, rifle, and BFG all at the same time, plus all that ammo, How do you fit 100 rockets in a backpack? It seems like if you werent too careful, if you got shot in the back, all that stuff could go off.

I liked SOF because it tried to be more realistic, real weapons, but the whole carrying 10 weapons at a time sort of bothers me. General Jack can get the job done with a combat knife and a p90.

I'm not sure realism and videogames mix but I do see your point. How about
RPGs where our hero is carrying 10 swords, 200 vials, a landcar and a hoverboat
in his back pocket ;)
I think SOF has a nice workable balance. Shoot bad people and the silly innocent,
collect ammo and go hunt for more.
I'll consider the PC versions down the road but my PC has VERY limited 3D
rendering. I can still play Mercs on Mame tho' so I'm happy LOL

Well, I will say that I don't think SoF was *that* realistic, but LC, if you want a nice balance of realism, try out SoF II. Mullins had a real hand in helping out the team with the realism of part 2, and I think they did an excellent job attaining it. If you don't like running around with 50 weapons, this is the game for you...

Personally, I loved SoF II. It's quite hard, but you begin to grow into the difficulty after a while. It's got a great story that even goes back into the roots of SoF1, and brings you further into the world of "The Shop". Very cool game. Picked it up, for about $25 on PC, a while after it came out(to play on the PC at work)...have never regretted it. Picked it up for $40 on Xbox, before I owned a PC at the house, didn't regret that either. All in all, a very good game....though quite a bit different than part 1.

I turned the SOF brightness up to GoldenEye and I was happy.
I blazed up to the impossible jump to see it was open pipe! Jump, duck,
crawl,advance... ~DOH!
I start work in Siberia later today ;)

Siberia is kind of tough...watch out for mounted guns and tanks!(and remember, the sniper rifle alone can take them both out)

Yeesh, those full frontal armor guys with the rocket launchers were a bit of a
surprise. So much for Bagdad being a stealth mission ;)

Interesting thing about Bahgdad, they cut out the first part of the level for some reason. On the DC it starts out with you and Hawk in that house, but on the PC there's a whole 10 to 12 minutes campaign just to get to that point.

That, the fact that there aren't any women enemies and the dogs have been done away with are about the only real differences from the PC version.

Dogs?! Did they die horrible deaths too? This game is truly ghastly at times.
I suspect I know the answers but does SOF have more features when you beat it?
A paintball option would lighten the mood. A level select would be fun too.
Some of those missions are worth enjoying again. Siberia was neat.

The dogs would just die(no ripping them to pieces with a shotgun or anything like that)...which, I think, was the right way to handle that. As for beating it...you simply get the ending, that's about it. I don't know if the DC version has it, but if it does you can always turn down the violence...

I think a level select thing might be in there, can't remember. If not, I think you can use your save-game file to revisit some of the levels(this may or may not be accurate, it's been a while since I've gone through the game on the DC).

I really liked the slaughter house series of levels, and the New York level. :)

Once you get done with this one, if you have an Xbox, check out SoF II...

The DC version actually has very options. Even the saves are automatic, with
no choices. No violence switch either. The violence is Ok sometimes but now
and then it is kind of grim. I remember painting the side of van with a soldiers
head. Thru the sniper scope maybe it looked too real? Also recently a guy in
Bagdad was advancing on me. I had shot him up pretty bad and he was limping
and blood covered, still trying to get me.

Maybe I'm getting soft in my old age. I glad the PC version didn't have dogs
being blown in half or anything. Gunning down and maiming women can't be
much of a treat tho'

I guess if I didn't care, then I should be worried, eh?

The women enemies were pretty much just like the men, they were armored, had guns...so you didn't really feel too bad about letting them have it. ;)

If you really don't dig the violence though, maybe you should skip SoF II on Xbox(I don't think it has a violence switch either) as you can do *a lot* more to the enemies on that one. You do stuff like blow *part* of their heads off, etc. It can get to be really nasty...;)

Also, don't ever go here...

My favorite "parts" game still has to be Bloodrayne.

There's something universally satisfying in carving up Nazis.

yeah but there's just so much more to do with them in Bloodrayne.

Sneak up behind one and WHAM, parts everywhere.

Fight furiously with one and you'll perhaps cut off an arm. They'll go running and bleeding down the hall. Chase them down and suck their blood to finish the job!

If you're lucky, you may cut off both of a Nazi's legs and he'll try and crawl away. At that point, do you whip out the double barreled shotgun and blow his head off (and pieces in multiple directions) at point blank range? Or do you just drop a stick of dynamite in front of him and watch as he tries to get away?

In a firefight with multiple foes? Pull out a high powered rifle and line them up! BLAM!!! Two torsos go flying off the legs they were formerly rested on.

Let's not forget that once you get to the Nazi levels (you have to pass a few levels before that), you can also switch the game to slow motion at any time. So it's even more satisfying to watch heads slowly pop off and fly through the air, showering blood and bouncing off a wall before they hit the ground.

I played a bit this morning and was fighting one of the first leaders in the Nazi levels - I managed to cut off both arms and both legs - yet he was still alive, but bleeding to death quickly. Since he was lying on the ground unable to do much of anything, I switched weapons to the Panzershreck, took a few steps back, turned on the slow motion, fired, and watched the show. The rocket hit its mark and pieces flew everywhere. You can't ask for better gaming than that.

Speaking of which, do you have this game yet Bel?

I don't....sadly. It, and the sequel, are both on my list of games I'd like to try out though... :)
