While I was drinking the morning java I tried Quake 3. My only other contact from with the series was renting Quake Uno for N-64. It was horrible. Quake III is NOT horrible I'm glad to report. It was big change from my last FPS Soldier of Fortune tho' Q3 is all run and gun. Ammo conservation is not an issue. Gunfighting strategy not an issue. Just scoop up the biggest, most bad ass gun you can find and shoot somebody. Hell, hold the trigger down and water them like your garden. If your garden runs around at 30 miles per hour and shoots back that is. Gore factor- there is blood and you can gib a fallen foe but with the respawning and speed of the game it isn't shocking like SOF was. Judging from screen pics I think you can dis-leg and disarm folks in UT-DC. Not here. Control factor-good. The controls are simple, move, look, switch gun, fire and jump. Duck too but with all the sprinting around why duck? Mostly you move a la Turok, shoot like SOF (R-trigger), jump with L-trigger and tap the up D-pad to switch guns. Things to change- Brightness. Put it up or get the 32" Perfectovision TV Bel has ;P Crosshairs- I think a color change when they land on something shoot-able would be nice, especially for new players. Other than that I think Q3 and I have some fun business to settle this week. SEGA! PS- Am I using the word gib(s) properly. As I see it gibs (noun)=blood and body parts. Gib (verb)= to turn someone into blood and body parts. Well if Shakespeare could make up new words (ie-bubble) so can *I* :) |

Ducking can be useful as most people aim for the abdomen or the head...you duck, they shoot right over your head...thing is, the AI players won't fall for this very much, so in the single player game it's not very useful. If you are digging Q3, you really should give Unreal Tournament a shot...and I'll see if I can help you out with that. :) Bel |

I was fearing the single player game was all 1 on 1 matches when I got a 2 on 1. Then a 3 on 1 :) They aren't the brightest bots going but they run like scalded dogs and shoot like crazy. The boss fight Vs Klesk was less fun. That level was large and should have been reserved for a 3 on 1 encounter. Take away Klesk and I really liked my time on tier two. I need to work on my rail-gun skills tho' I thought it had a sniper zoom... Back to the instructions. |

Zoom- OK I got my zoom running. Gripes-Zoom is too zoom. I want half-zoom. Also it took a lot of tweaking on the controller sensitivity to make it useable. Still with the too-zoomy zoom and its slow use it sorta sucks. The bots run way too fast for that field of view to be useful. That is if someone doesn't frag you from behind first... I think zoom would work best against other people online where you could try to out hunt each other. Can't say I'll ever know :( Tier 3 news- Grunt I hate you! That guy had my number for sure. At least I could take my frustration out on poor Bitterman ;) Time to tune the controller and go back in! |

Still tweaking my controls. I have one spare button and I'm not sure what to do with it. Scores is distracting and zooming is not too good. Maybe a gauntlet button for close quarters bashing? Fans of the Cat Assasin series- it will continue. I have a bunch of ideas for Baraka. They will amuse readers of 70s and 80s action pulp I hope. |

Controls v5.0? So I picked quick gauntlet. Given that the railgun is sorta useless with the wonky zoom I'm doing more close in fighting and strafing. Walking up and bopping a guy with a lightning gun is nice ;) Tier 4 is mucho fun thus far. Rate those guns- machine gun- good for softening targets and stirring the pot. Kills only with a lot of luck tho' shotgun- now you're playing with power. The spread makes hitting a runner a lot easier. Kills with upper torso-head hits and rules with the old Quad Damage! pulse gun- I like this a lot too. The garden hose that kills. rockets- gib-erific. Direct hits are nice and causing a lot of splash damage on a runner or a herd is cool too. rail gun- too slow and no working zoom make it a loser grenade launcher- it is good for checking ahead. Lobbing shells into a room or hall where some action is can get you some frags. Put the darn thing away when they are ready to fight back tho' gauntlet- works well, you just need to be close, very close. lightening gun- looks cool but it is hard to keep on target for a kill. Use the pulse gun instead. BFG- big fucking gun? I haven't got one yet... |

A lot of those weapons were in Quake 1 and 2, and the BFG was from Doom. You need to try out Quake on DC, it's quite good...but sadly, has no music(a real downer). Bel |

Tier Five report- Alrighty, so now things heat up. Lots of bouncy pads for air to air and ground to air combat. The invisibility pick up has hit the scene. I was hoping to go Predator but the turkeys still run their crazy ways, blasting all over. It is more fun trying to fight them when they are invisible. Maybe I need to import SPIRIT MODE~! from Turok... That was fun. Imagine those slo-mo frags ;) No BFG sightings yet. Crazy Quake III thought of the day- 4 DCs, 4TVs, and some kind of Hub for the Mother of all 'Casty Death matches. The tough part would be finding 3 other freaks to make this scheme work. Rats! |

Tier Five Boss Report- well this must be the end. Xaero likes to shoot and he does it well. His shots rarely miss and boy does he love the Rail Gun. Close battle helps some but he still kicks your ass. You will live slightly longer playing the long distance game but that Rail Gun will whup you in the end. That said the Tier 5 levels were mucho fun. Lots of jumping and bouncing, with a balance of run and gun and some long range pot shotting too. There is something cool about shooting a bouncer like a skeet pigeon. Time to rework the controls again and see if I can't get some use out of Zoom. Looks like I have me a Sniper War to win. |

Xaero and I have called a truce. I killed all his friends and he gets to keep castle. Fear not, my sword shall not be beaten into a plowshare. No, I'm making a new sword. Hopefully a better one. I found Unreal T~! for Dreamcast in my mailbox this morning. The slaughter will continue in a new thread :) UNREAL, UNREAL *carry on chant until you are bored* |
