Picked up Sonic Gems Collection at Gamestop today (while I was buying Metal Slug 4 & 5 on the Xbox) - played the big three and here are my impressions! Sonic CD - not a 100% perfect emulation graphicswise, but it's nice to have it on a home system. The intro animation is now pretty good quality full screen video which is a plus. I assume the endings will be too though I haven't reached them yet. Load times are greatly reduced (no more waiting 10 seconds to go into the past). The music is the US music, which everyone seems to say is inferior to the Japanese soundtrack. I prefer the US main theme by far to the wretched "Toot Toot Sonic Warrior". The rest of the music is about equal quality on both sides. Biggest downside is having to play with the Gamecube controller. Sonic R - Seems to be a port based off the PC version. There's no pop-up or draw-in which was nice, but unfortunately the nice transparencies on Radiant Emerald are nowhere to be found. Control seems a bit more difficult than the Saturn version, but still pretty good. Having already been a big fan of Sonic R, I shall enjoy unlocking everything again for the hour or so that it takes. Sonic The Fighters - they kept the Japanese name instead of calling it Sonic Championship. I think this is a good thing. Having only played the actual arcade version briefly, I cannot say if the port is 100% accurate, but it looks and feels good for me. Yes, it's pretty shallow fare compared with Sega's major fighting franchise, but it's still quite fun. The matches are fast and furious and some of the backgrounds are pretty imaginative. Makes me glad I have that Soul Calibur 2 joystick. Works great for this game. There are also 6 game gear games and two hidden games included. A brief look at Gamespot revealed that the two hidden games are the two Vectorman games. Score! While it's not quite as cool as having the Bare Knuckle Games like the Japanese version of Gems Collection, Vectorman is still a nice addition. Also unlike the Japanese version where both Gamecube and PS2 versions exist, we in the US have only the GC version. Not sure who to blame for this, but I'll blame Sony because it's easier. At any rate it is priced at a not too unreasonable $30. |
