So I gave "wipeOut" a good racing. First off, the graphics are darn good for an old Saturn game. Nothing too fancy but smooth. And that music is frickin' cool!! Between running on the tracks, looking at the whacky ads and grooving out, I was a busy cat. The weapon effects came off a little "meh" but it isn't exactly a death race out there. I liked the wider track lanes. Games like Extreme-G make you feel like a pinball in a drinking straw at times. Not a racer that will make me give up my beloved Rally titles but it is a good change of pace. Thunderhawk II- I believe the original was on Sega CD. This CORE game actually has a lot going for it. 1- the CPK intro movie looks neat. I like the "Firestorm" missile effects. 2-familiar controls, they are the same as BlackDawn. 3-Less pop-up and better all around graphics than Black Dawn. The graphics reminded me of Steel Reign on PSX. 4- easy objectives-kill red label targets and protect blue ones. 5-me like EXPLOSIONS~! The bad- 1. too easy to burn up ammo 2- controls need a lot of practice to get the hang off. A piece of practice sky would be nice in these helicopter shooters. 3-mission briefings are all in spoken Japanese. Come again Sato-san? Blow up what? ;) |

Yeah, Saturn WipeOut is damn good. The graphics are alright...they aren't that great, and definitely a step down from the PSX version, but the added speed just really makes up for it(imo). The PSX version runs smooth...and slow, even on the second tournament series...but the Saturn version hauls ass(most likely due to the lower framerate) even in regular mode...and hauls *super-ass* on the second tournament mode.

I guess if you are playing Saturn games in 2005 graphics aren't too important ;) The images would be sharper and less muddy on PSX no doubt. For a 3rd party Saturn game it is darn amzing tho' It could have been WipEout meets original Daytona USA. That would have pained the eyes for sure. I'm sticking to my Q3 ban so I'll be playing more of these games. |

I ripped myself a WipeOut OST. Redbook audio is good stuff. Those MP3s are nice and large. Makes me wonder- why the hell do too many newer racing games have tracks at are like 2 minutes for 5 minute races?! Looping sucks. Especially if the song is bad. Yeesh, at least advance to the next song.... None this nonsense in WipEout tho' :) |
