Gonna take you for a ride

First Impressions- After cutting my teeth on Quake 3 this was quite a change. Characters=less guns=MORE. The arenas lack the grand scale of the Q3 ones. The energy of UT seems put into the play. The game is always trying to keep you on the offensive by quite simply attacking you! I got a sniper rifle in a practice deathmatch but I set it aside in favor of my short-medium range guns. And what guns. Even the basic Enforcer gun is a killer. Get two of them and go cowboy. Just like GoldenEye. Guns also have a quick firing secondary feature (tap the Dpad up). Slick. Items- they are around but they appear to be less important than in Q3. Besides armor is always on top a stoopid box I can't seem to jump to. Grr. Blood and gibs- I was expecting more. Q3 looks garish compared to this. It is rarely worth the ammo to splatter the dead in UT. Besides someone is probably gunning for you, so run and plan your next attack. Controls- I went with config 2. It was very Turok-Quake. Other thoughts- looks like an all out gunfight with trash talk. Hell, I don't even remember what the music was. Wraith and I will be dispensing justice more often for sure. Stay tuned as I head for Xan :) Happy blasting! |

The weapons in UT are just great...and the fact that every single one of them has an alt. fire just rocks. If you ever find a redeemer, try the alt. fire on that one...just guiding that missle around is too cool. UT, to me, just seems to be a much deeper FPS deathmatch experience than Quake 3's mindless kill-kill-kill. I really enjoy the story too, the way you can read about why each contestant is in the tournament and what they hope to accomplish. I also really dig the personality they put into each of the characters, with their various taunts and whatnot. The soundtrack is fucking great too...one of the best of all time, imo. You can download it for free off Planet Unreal, but it will take some work to get the files converted to MP3 format. I have, however, converted them all to MP3 and merged them all into one 95 meg file that plays through the entire set, with iTunes Crossfade between each of the tracks(as the files, for some odd reason, don't end...they just stop). If you ever want it, just let me know, I can get it to you... DC UT, back when it was actually online, was such a fucking rush...it was just great. Gen and I used to play it all the time online...sadly, unlike Q3, Epic Megagames never released a UT DC map pack so one could host DC games one a PC. Kills me too, some of those DC/PS2 exclusive maps were just fucking god-like. Bel |

So I started the single player UT game. The first place licked for shooting but what an arena. The warpdrive effect with the escort ships blew me away. Then more bots got involved in the later stages and life was good. I still haven't scored a frag with the sniper gun yet. Plus the stage it was on was way too closed in for the scope magnification. I paid more attention to the music. Yep, it does rock. I can't say it is superior to Quake 3 but it is as fun. The two systems are just different. Only gripe so far-One guy doing the voice work? Did they run out of room on the GD-ROM? Killing Spree.... :) |

I think it was pushing the audio memory in the DC. That was the first thing I noticed about the game on the Mac/PC when I started playing it on that(after the DC version's online play died), that they have *way* more voice and actors. Bel |

Yee hah! I got my sniper gun working and took it out on "Deck 16" Very fun stage. I zoomed in to 4.5X on some hapless punk and BANG. His head bounced away like a soccer ball. I also found the Redeemer today. 2 kills (on me) and 1 missed shot. I'll be needing some work at the target range... |
