Sorry about the font but it's the only way to make everything match up.

Anyway so here's a brief rundown of the differences between the PS1 and Saturn MK Trilogy games.

ITEM--------------------PS1-----SATURN--Difference
SINGLE PLAYER
Button to Menu----------3.80-----4.18---0.38 sec--9.09%
Menu to Char Select-----9.84-----9.04---0.80 sec--8.13%
Char Select to Destiny--7.02-----7.19---0.17 sec--2.36%
Destiny to Gameplay-----11.7----15.39---3.69 sec--23.98%
Round End to Tower------7.16----12.39---5.23 sec--42.21%

2 PLAYER
2 Player versus load----15.48---18.72---3.24 sec 17.31%
Morph Load (avg of 3)----5.80---5.92----0.13 sec 2.14%
Morph Back (avg of 2)----6.22---6.52----0.30 sec 4.53%
Round End to Continue----5.38---7.55----2.17 sec 28.74%

Load Time Summary
PS1 has overall shorter load times. Both versions load times are horrendous, however, so that's not really saying much.

End of Round Announcer "Cyrax Wins"
PS1 is more crisp than the Saturn version

In-Game voices
Saturn is crisp and clean and also has varied pitch levels. For example, Cyrax's "XYZ" (or whatever he says) is always the same on the PS1, but on the Saturn, it varies. sometimes it's high, sometimes it's low.

No-load Morphs truly no-load?
PS1 has no-load morphs. Saturn version has a split second pause.

Controls
Saturn has 6 face button layout just like the arcade MK3. PS1 does not.

Graphics
The PS1 is hooked through S-Video and the Saturn is just through composite. Despite that I really didn't notice any differences in the graphics.

Interesting note:
Both versions have the same glitch in Cyrax's chopper Fatality. When he flies down and kills his opponent, they are supposed to squirt blood (and do in the arcade MK3). In the Saturn and PS1 MK Trilogy games, they spurt oil (like Cyrax is supposed to when he is killed).

VERDICT BY BENSTYLUS: Saturn version is superior, despite the slightly longer load times. Plus it will play on a Sega system where the PS1 version will not.

System One

System Two

before downloading, turn the sound on your computer all the way down. Can you tell the difference without the sound?

Now turn the volume up. Which is which?

"Plus it will play on a Sega system where the PS1 version will not."

That is truly profound ;) Will there be other games presented too?
Head to head- WipeOut or Black Dawn or Street Fighter Zero 2?

All those and more are possible, but unlikely. In the event that a large belief erupts that the Playstation version of something is superior to the Saturn version, I consider it my honour-bound duty to investigate the matter.

And if it is indeed the truth, I shall let it rest. If a falsehood arises (as I believe is the case with MK Trilogy), then I shall proclaim it to the world.

Load Times - Man, I don't remember them being that bad...but you're probably right. I do remember that the Saturn's load times were longer though...

"Cyrax Wins" - I think it's because the PSX version has all that on redbook, as PSX MK3 did.

In-Game voices - This is true, and I think it'd due to the Saturn's larger sound memory, or they could have just tweaked it so that the Saturn itself just changed to pitch and whatnot, on the fly.

No-load Morphs truly no-load? - Saturn version loads on the fatalities too, for the split second, doesn't it?

Controls - This is kind of an unfair, low blow man. ;) Both pads have a very MK-like layout, but just as much as the PSX's pad differs from the true MK layout, the Saturn pad does as well. Now granted, I did prefer having Run and Block in the middle of the pad, instead of using the shoulder buttons.

Graphics - Alright boy...we need to talk. Didn't notice any differences? Not even the horrendous dithered transparencies....are you sure...maybe want to take another quick look? ;)

I'd have to disagree with you on the Saturn version being superior. It's sort of a hard decision too...because the game *should* have been better on the Saturn, as most 2D games are...but do to the lazy port, it really isn't. The graphics and load times are better on the PSX version, about the only thing it really comes down to is controller pad prefernce. I think the Saturn 6 button pad is the best controller ever made...for *most* games, but in this case, I really do prefer the PSX pad for MK. :)

Then again...that's just me. ;)

In-Game voices - This is true, and I think it'd due to the Saturn's larger sound memory, or they could have just tweaked it so that the Saturn itself just changed to pitch and whatnot, on the fly.

Could also be due to the Saturn having two separate sound processor (the Motorola 68EC000 and the Yamaha F1 DSP processor) whereas the PS1 had to use the main processor.

They probably downsampled the PS1 effects to ease the strain, which would result in lower quality.

For the fatalities - I didn't notice ANY difference at all in the execution time.

You tell me which one of those two videos does it faster. I would have done some others but Cyrax's fatality is the only one I know off the top of my head

And for transparencies, you want to give me some examples so I can check them side by side? It'd be easier than just trying to look for random transparencies. The game doesn't really have a whole lot in the way of transparencies as far as I know.

Man I really gotta get the N64 version to compare it to these...

I am certain without even having played it that all three versions are superior to the game.com version.

I just realized how boring watching videos of nothing but load time can be unless you're doing something like this.

Sound - Yeah, that'd be my guess too. :)

For the transparencies, look at Johnny's Shadow Kick, Nightwolf's Shadow Charge, virtually any of Shao Kahn's moves, or simply get the Aggressor thing going. What pisses me off about the whole situation: They made all these "shadow" moves transparent when in the arcade they were just green-tinted shadows.

On the N64 version, they added a lot of detail to the background, but the animation is so piss-poor, you'll shit your pants. ;)

I'll be sure to pick up some Depends before I play it then. How's the load time?

The 64 version of Trilogy is one of the reasons I dislike anything after MK3.
The gameplay sucked- the game wasn't "smarter", difficulty meant faster and
more damage. Also 10 extra color swapped characters does not equal roster
depth!!!! Did Capcom make Ken a blond Ryu with a red shirt? Having my
block, run and kicks on those dicky yellow buttons wasn't a treat either.

Trilogy should be blasted to the Planet of Fighters that Suck. There it can collect
dust with Biofreaks, War Gods, Double Dragon V, Fatal Fury 1 etc. Jade and Ermac
can get married and rule the shitball as King and Queen for all I care.

OK, I feel better now ;) Me and my slippers will go cook some dinner...

Um....let's not get started with Capcom's issues with cloning the Ryu/Ken character....because I'm sure Dan, Akuma, Evil Ryu, Shin Akuma, Violent Ken and a few others might have you thinking you're seeing double...;)

Ermac lover ;P At least they tried. As for Dan, he is cool. Especially in
Super Puzzle Fighter :)
PS- Where's Violent Ken from? I have SFA3 but I rarely play it. Is he there?
