I never thought much about Joss Whedon until i moved in with my friends of mine back in December. They had a stack of buffy and angel dvd's. I didnt think Buffy was all that great of a movie, or a tv show when it first came on. But boredom lead me to watch them one day, and I thought, man these shows arent the best thing on TV, but they dont suck. Shows featuring high school kids really aren't my cup of tea, but at least there was action, and decent fights and supernatural stuff. I had heard of Firefly when it was on, but didnt watch it because of Gina Torres. She's always playing some kind of warrior woman character, kind of bland, expressionless. It may not be her fault, but that seems like the only roles she seems to get, the woman bores me nonetheless. After the show was cancelled, I just figured it must not have been that good. A friend of mine whose TV judgement I value got some dvdrips of the show and gave me a copy. We watched the pilot, which apparantly fox never aired, and I'm thinking, this show is great! Over the next 2 days, I watched the rest of the show, and then went out and ordered the DVD's online. They were only 30 something dollars at www.deepdiscountdvd.com. Watching the featurettes showed me that the cast and crew really cared about what they were doing, the acting was great, (even Ms. Torres's), the dialog was witty. The plots, while not completely original had some fresh twists. A great show all around, and it was sad that it had been cut down in its prime by morons at FOX. A few weeks after watching the DVD's I heard about the movie. It's been the only movie i've really looked forward to all year, and I'm proud to say it didn't let me down at all. I couldnt find a single unflattering review anywhere. My only disappointment was that it wasnt longer, I just didnt want it to end. I havent felt that way about a movie in a long long time. Even if you haven't seen the show, go see the movie. You dont need to have seen the show to understand the movie, they supply enough background for the uninitiated to understand. Go see it, tell your friends about it, we must vote with our dollars to let everyone know that we want more Firefly/Serenity. Come on, you know those last three Star Wars movie left a bad scifi taste in your mouth but give this movie a chance. It's like gargling that Star Wars out with Krystal. Enough ranting like a crazy person. See the movie |

I've never gotten into Buffy or Angel. I work at a video store and thought about renting Angel based on what friends have told me. I, nonetheless, decided against it after seeing pictures from an episode in which they turn Angel into a mad puppet. However, Joss Whedon's story of Firefly is very different from what glances I've seen of his two other shows. It took guts to walk away from the almost guaranteed hit of a live-action version of Marvel's Iron Man in order to do this. The best way to describe Firefly would be to compare it to the anime series "Cowboy Bebop." I originally saw Firefly when I had a subscription to Netflix and was curious. After seeing the first disc I went to the store and bought the series. It's that good. Needless to say I was very excited when I discovered that they were going to release a motion picture based on the series. I did have some concerns about how they could pull it off. They'd have to appeal to both series fans and newcomers. There were only 14 shows in the DVD set, but much was covered in those shows. They succeeded in doing this with good writing and talented actors. It catches a newcomer up to speed and satisfies the series fan in the same few scenes. The second time I saw the movie I brought my brother who's never seen the show. As we were walking out of the theater he began to tell me not only how awesome the movie was, but how much he wanted to see more. I can't recommend this movie enough. At the video store I'm constantly asked if I've seen any good movies lately. The answer this week is; "Hell yes!" Its not only one of the best adventure movies this year, but reminds me not give up all hope of ever seeing a non-Lucas sci-fi. Go see the movie |

I went and saw this space Western tonight. The lexan suspenders for everyone's breeches was a nice touch. I must say, seeing the previews for this movie did me a dis-service. I was expecting something much faster and kick ass. The world of Serentity was much slower and darker than I expected. The Reavers were interesting but how do mindless cannibal monsters fly and maintain spaceships? Also their manner and activities were so clipped and inferred I doubt the power and horror will transfer onto the TV screen of a DVD renter. The best character was the Nameless Assassin. His matter of fact nature and Commander Data-like innocence made for an unique villain. The end of the movie left plenty of room for Serenity 2. Unless Joss has some scheme to jump the movie into an UPN timeslot I suspect it will be superior. He has a good universe, now he can tell a better story. Fans of this movie should also see High Plains Drifter and The Outlaw Jose Wales. |
