"Other game mechanics, like picking up a weapon off the ground (pipes, wrenches, flamethrowers, tires, etc.) require the player to pull down on the left-analog stick (otherwise used for movement), and the X+Y button. Try it for yourself; it's awkward as hell."

Oh, X and Y *not* X or Y. Could of sworn I tried that more than once. It is fucked up becuase you move with the left analog, I was like this can't be it that makes you move! I keep trying to push down the analog stick like a button instead, well it said to push down! :P

Zombie revenge was one of those early early games that really got kind of panned and the fact there were so many great games out there, I never picked it up.  Played it a few times and it was pretty fun and chaotic.

What's wild is later on in the game, you actually go into that Mansion from House of the Dead, it looks the same and everything. Cool stuff.

Speaking of zombies (thread diverter mode), I have come close to getting that Stubbs the Zombie but have not, suppose to be a real cult classic, a good game.

Well, Xbox is the only version I'd get simply because the PC version is infected with StarForce. If you manage to get it, let us know what you think.

Beyond that, I want it to be able to hold at least the five systems (XB, PS2, GC, DC and SS) I have hooked up to it and for good measure maybe one more or maybe a nice switcher instead of the one I have.  I'll need a one that has optical once I get the surround sound system.

When going for a Receiver, nowadays try to get something that has either two optical outputs, or one optical and one coxial output. Currently the Xbox and 360 both use an optical out for their 5.1 output, and you know the PS3 will probably use that and/or the HDMI cable.

Yeah, I don't know what to make of it...sounds weird...maybe play with the controller layout like Scott was talking about. :)

Spikeout is really poor imo.
I never managed to pick up weapons either but I don't think I was
missing much. If you want to rampage and smash things on Xbox
get State of Emergency. It is your best option.

Okay, since we're having so much trouble with picking up weapons, I decided to pop it in. The solution is right in front of you, it's just kinda goofy. The manual says "Hold the Left Trigger down" accompanied by a down arrow, "and press X and Y". That means you stand over the weapon, hold back (i.e. down) on the left analog stick and then press X and Y simultaneously. It actually works every time without a hitch, but it is not the Left trigger "button" that you are pressing down.

As for State of Emergency being better, I just can't see it. Spikeout has all the frenetic action of a 16-bit Beat-em Up, including cooperative special attacks, it has intense enemy AI (at least offline), and it has decent 3D gameplay. I am against the trend for forcing a Beat-em Up to be a "seedy" adventure title in order to appeal. Spikeout is Beat-em Up through and through, regardless of how bad it beats your ass. ;)

Thank you very much. Did get it to work last night. All the weapons so far have been a bit of a bummer, although the baricade is kinda fun to throw at people and take out 2 or 3 punks at a time.

I'm finding the difference in character play styles to be alot more interesting then the weapons. Who knows maybe there are some cooler weapons later on.

It really does get hard fast or should I say all at once, I haven't even got past the third boss yet! Not far enough for it to auto-save me a checkpoint at least.

IAWTP. State of Emerency on PS2, no multiplayer, whaaaat, pretty fun for short stretches but is repetitive and being 1 player kills it. XBox version can be played co-op which helps alot.

I found Warriors to be pretty damn good and the main gameplay in it is the melee type so take that for what its worth. Of course there is the story stuff, graffiti, stealing, side stuff so it definitely is somewhat inspired by other games, Manhunt being one.

I picked up SoE on Xbox dirt cheap, like $6, a long while back. Gen and I had a lot of fun in co-op, but in single player it does get kind of old after a while. I still dig it though.

I *really* need to take a look into this Spikeout game...

No problem. I didn't mean for that to sound so sarcastic, I just get a little irritated when good games get bashed. I agree though, the weapons basically aren't worth it, they're just there for the same reason they were in the original Beat-Em Ups, beginners. Double Dragon, Final Fight, and Streets of Rage all used weapons as a cheap method to knock enemies down (possibly to give one a breather and recompose, I'm not sure). They were never the best way to fight though, the basic combos and grapple moves always did the most damage in beat-em ups.

The characters in Battlestreet definitely have enough variety to consider them different. That's an interesting fact since Gamespot claimed one of the game's major flaws was that all of the characters played the same. Their other major claim was that you could play through the game mashing X though, so it's obvious that they didn't actually play the game. ;)

I've heard that The Warriors was a decent game, I haven't actually played it yet. State of Emergency really seems like a caricature of Beat-Em Ups to me. Maybe it has its merits, but it just doesn't belong in the same genre. It's a mob "simulator", Rockstar style.

Panzer Dragoon Orta in 5.1 made me crap myself.

Yeah, 5.1, especially in gaming is just fucking phenomenal. A lot of Xbox games sound great in 5.1, though sometimes the dev. puts minimal effort into the mix...resulting in just a very generic sound stream coming out of all 5 speakers without anything else. Unreal Championship and SoFII on Xbox did an excellent job with their 5.1 setup, probably two of the best I've heard outside of The Suffering(probably the *best* 5.1 I've ever heard in a game).

At the local place, that is dying a slow death from constant "Magic" and other card game tournaments, picked up 5 Genesis games...have to return 3.

Incredible Crash Dummies, $4.90 complete - Already had it(fuck!).

Tinhead, $4.90 complete - Already had it(double fuck!).

Revenge of Shinobi, $4.90 cart only - Only had Spiderman in it(no Batman).

Crackdown(import version), $4.90 complete - No region coding, but man the game is fucking hard!

Spider-Man: The Animated series, $4.90 complete - Finally got it, and for under the $30 to $40 it usually goes for on ebay, but man does it suck.

Ah well, 2 out of 5 ain't bad....well, yeah it is, but anyway...

Will return the above three tomorrow or Tues, see if I can find something else.

Not a big deal, I'll get it eventually. Even without Batman, it's still a damn good game, and that's what matters most. :)

Ninja Assault (PS2) - $10 used: Always wanted this lightgun game. Ninja's with guns how cheesy.

It had been awhile since I had played this one. Pretty damn good, not your normal cops shooting in alleyways premise but of course, Ninjas with guns. Fucking hard though.

Strike Force Bowling (PS2) - $8 used: Been jonesing for a good bowling and pool game for my newer systems so this is my first whack at that.

Its no Ten Pin Alley for sure. Physics seemed passable, just a real low budget affair, real low budget. Got to be better ones out there, this one is getting traded.
