DC Sega Smash Pack (Streets of Rage 2 and Shining Force!)

PS2- after being disappointed with Galactic Wrestling I got the original Def
Jam Vendetta. The controls look awesome and N64 easy.

Ugh. Just do us a favor and *do not* judge any game you play on there, be it on the graphics, control and especially the sound, by just playing this disc. It is, by far, one of the worst emulation jobs in the history of emulated titles on a console...

Well, I finally picked up a copy of Capcom Classics Collection Volume 2 for XB for $20 new. Just from the few games I played, I can safely say that this one of the best retro compulations ever. I think the thing I like most about it most is that the games are later than the ones on the first disc. I'll make some comments on the games I have tried (there are 20 titles on this disc, nice).

1941: Counter Attack - Wow, this plays alot better than the Saturn version on the Capcom Generations disc which seemed really slow.

Avengers - Haven't tried this overhead beat 'em up.

Black Tiger - Side scrolling shump and a good one.

Block Block - Haven't tried this Breakout varation.

Captain Commando - I don't think I have ever played the port of this one much, but the Arcade version is sick! I tripped out when you could jump in Slug type body armor, fire guns, etc. I would love to give this a try multiplayer co-op which supports up to 4 players!

Eco Fighters - This is a weird little side scrolling shump, you have an arm on the front of your ship that you can rotate. On the XB version you have to use your right thumbstick to rotate the arm, which I found pretty tough. Seems really good though.

The King of Dragons - Holy shit! Can't believe I had never played or even heard of this one before. Very much in the vein of Golden Axe but it is set up a little different, when you kill dudes they drop gold, which is for score but you also earn experience points and level up RPG style. I wasn't too impressed with the graphics as this game is a couple of years newer than GA, until I fought the first dragon boss with a sprite as big as the screen! Great game.

Knights of the Round - Haven't tried this side scrolling beat 'em up yet.

Last Duel - Haven't tried this overhead shump yet.

Magic Sword - Haven't tried this side scrolling beat 'em up yet. Wow, this game has a lot of beat 'em ups, if thats your thing, you'll love this disc.

Mega Twins - Haven't tried this action platformer yet, looks neat though.

Quiz & Dragons - Haven't tried this trivia game yet, weird stuff.

Side Arms: Hyper Dyne - Haven't tried this side scrolling shump yet, looks awesome though.

Street Fighter - This is the one I really wanted to try out as I had never played it but am a huge fan of the SF series. Not nearly as bad as I thought, specials are difficult but not impossible to get off but they do TONS of damage, sweet. The hardware must not have been up for the gameplay though, very clunky, chokes leading to massive slowdown even freezing momentarily sometimes. Has to have some the worst voice I have ever heard in any game, laughable really. Some may find the clunky gameplay unforgiveable but I love it for the history and now I don't need Fighting Street for the TG anymore! I would be curious how that port compares to the Arcade game if anyone has played both.

Super Street Fighter II Turbo - Alot harder than the PSX and 3dO versions I have tried, I played it on normal difficulty and it handed me my lunch double quick. Plays great but I hope the AI isn't too stupid as I mainly play single player. One of the extras on this disc is a guy from who is a top SF II player explaining the finer points of playing the game on video, which is very long and thorough.

I don't think there are any unlockable games but there are tons of cool extras like tips, art and music to check out.

The Speed Rumbler Overhead shooter in a car, haven't tried it yet.

So, this game mainly has shumps, beat em ups and of course Street Fighter, all staples of the late 80's and early 90's coin ops on this disc. Highly recommended. I will check back with thoughts on the other games once I try them.

The Black Tiger from Capcom that I know isn't a shmup... it's a platformer...

Oh yeah, my bad.

I left out the last 3 games too...

Three Wonders - Wow, I have only tried one of the games the shooting one, it also has an action game and a puzzle game. Wonderful graphics and plays really well.

Tiger Road - Didn't care for this one, kinda clunky and ugly.

Varth - Overhead shooter, not too great IMO.

Tried out the rest I hadn't played yet.

Avengers - Overhead beat 'em up just doesn't work too well.

Block Block - This is very good, yes it is Breakout like but you actually get specials and gems that drop that increase the size of your paddle. Speaking of paddle, games like this would really play better with something like that, tough at times using the d-pad.

Knights of the Round - Pretty good, alot like the King of Dragons graphically and gameplay wise. I think I like KoD alot more though.

Last Duel - Yuck, don't care for this one too much.

Magic Sword - Holy crap this is more like it! While its not the greatest looking its really fast, more of an action platformer than an iso beat 'em up ala GA and best of all you find CPU controlled characters to help you along the way. This one rules!

Mega Twins - I didn't spend too much time with it, seemed really fast and difficult.

Quiz & Dragons - I actually had some fun with this...seems to have a fixation with questions about Pee Wees Big Adventure for some reason. ;)

Side Arms: Hyper Dyne - The control was kind of tough for me as you have stuff come from both the front and rear and switching directions wasn't the most natural thing. Other than that seemed good.

The Speed Rumbler - Didn't care for this one too much, kind of clunky and your vehicle couldn't take much damage.

Let us know how SpyHunter 2 is, I'd hope it's better than part 1. Still want to play Nowhere to Run, there's just something about it that looks pretty hip.

I'd guess that the speed it runs at on the Saturn is the game's actual speed, and that the emulation of the title on the Xbox is forcing it to run faster than it normally would. On all of the emulation discs I own, the games run faster than they originally did in the arcade. Not necessarily a bad thing... :)

CC was pretty hip, I'm glad they kept in the 4 player support. Would rock to play it with 4 people(assuming there is unlimited credits).

Ran into this via MAME a long while back. It's pretty nice, but I find it hard to get used to those arms, I can only dream of having to do it the way they want you do on the Xbox controller.

I think I briefly played this either on the SNES or MAME emulation. It seems ok.

Well, at least someone appreciates it...because I fucking hate it. ;) Still, it's amazing to see just what a complete 180 SF2 was compared to this.

Does he have some sort of middle name? They all have some sort of middle name that described they're cheap-ass gameplay style. There was one guy, who was the US champion, his name was like Mike "Cheap Cornerer" Johnson or some bullshit. Honestly, I'd be ashamed if my only claim to fame was being some cheap-ass player on SF2...

Was at GameStop today, picked up some Xbox games:

Brute Force - $3.99, complete. Played a demo of it on one of my Xbox Exhibition discs a while back, it's pretty good. Downloading all the DL content for it now...

Max Payne - $2.99, complete. Everyone tells me how good this is, I've never played it before. Will do so now...

Max Payne 2 - $1.49, complete. Again, everyone tells me how good this is, I've never played it before. Will do so after MP1...

The sticker price on Brute Force was $2.99, but they charged me $3.99...didn't catch it until I got home. Not going to go back to haggle over a dollar, but it still kind of pisses me off.

Ah well, not a bad day...

Silent Scope- PS2- I kept seeing around cheap and I like snipering.

Smashing Drive-Xbox- an early title based on a Namco Arcade game.
Reviews are harsh but it is arcade racing with destruction and power-ups.
It has to be some what fun. I've the darkest brink of racing games
(Taxi 2, Circuit Beat, Tommi Makinen Rally,Dakar PS1) and this seems better. Smashing Drive was also 5.99...

I got all my Xmas wrapping stuffs. I hope to finish all that jazz up this week.

I've got the first SS on DC, and love it. *Really* want that damn SS Collection on Xbox, but fuck it's always so expensive, no matter where you go.

I, too, had Smashing Drive at one point. Picked it up soon after I got my Xbox because it was only $7. It was ok, I HATED the soundtrack(that song they play over and over and over made me want to kill myself)...eventually let Gen use the game to get some major in-store credit at one of BlockBuster's GameRush trade in deals...

Fucking Max Payne won't load, so I'll have to take it back tomorrow and get another copy. Would do it today, but my head is fucking killing me and it's raining outside. Sucks, I really wanted to play it too...

I have to wonder if it's a good time to be doing shopping online, using your credit card and all?

I'm about to buy a Mega Drive 2 RGB/SCART cable from NCSX online. They are located in New York, but the shipping fucking kills me, AND I have to pay sales tax! Fuck me... And it's a lot easier and perhaps cheaper than eBay, because there's only one or two of them on ebay at a time, and are just as expensive.

And then I have to buy a RGB -> Component Transcoder, and I've seen them sold from places ranging from Florda to Australila. Fucking expensive, but I love the emulator look, so it'll be worth it to me.

As long as you're being safe, dealing with reputable dealers, doing it on a system you trust and have run virus and spyware scans on, using an up-to-date browser and *not* doing it over a wireless connection(no matter how safe it's supposed to be) you should be fine. :)
