Yeah, maybe if try the different picture modes on the set you might find one that looks better. It can be pretty drastic difference in my limited experience.
If you haven't checked out that link to that av-cables.net, you should, they have all that kind of thing and adapters you could need at good prices.
Yeah, I think the bass is probably the main thing, so a seperate sub would be good, but I think if its high powered enough even going without that might be an option. As far as the reciever, I'm not ruling out anything thats at least 100 watts, those reasonable packages tended to be 200 watts, a Sony at the same price like 600 watts. These things that are 1000+ watts, that just has to be overkill plus I have a real small living room. |

that reminds me i heard about another website monoprice.com while listening to the radio on sunday. It was recommended by the host Leo Laporte, so it wasn't just a commercial advertising it. apparently they've got lots of cables (including hdmi stuff) at really low prices. |

The Sony's seems to have quite a few pre-set picture modes...I can't remember the one I go with, I think it's "Vibrant" or something like that. The Movie setting always seems so fucking dark, and the other one makes everything have a red tone to it.
I'll definitely take a peek...think is, I just need an S-Video cable and they're pretty cheap(unless you get the Monster brand). ;)
The sub that came with that Kenwood setup was pretty weak...it pissed me off. The way they wanted you to set up the system, you plug the sub into the receiver, then the speakers into the sub. So they sit there and jack all the juice and you're left with sub-par bass. I had to turn it up *damn* loud to get anything out of it. This next time I set it up I just took the sub out of the equation and hooked the speakers directly into the receiver(they way it *should* be done). Once I did that, I noticed that the receiver asked a question about the sub, I punched in "no" and it turned around and kicked up the bass on the Bose and other speakers to make up for it. It's nice. I still want to get a sub....but I'm not in any big hurry.
Well, in terms of wattage, just use your best judgement(and a store demo if possible). As you'll be in a house, you'll have the freedom to crank it to the max...and man, on some movies that's quite a rush. In my apt, I can crack it up pretty loud...but I have to keep it a decent level as I'm on the bottom floor and have people above me and to the side. Bel |

Man, HDMI at a decent price, now that's something. I still cannot believe that the cheapest HDMI cable I've ever seen is $40. Still beats the $70 that they usually go for. Thanks for the link! Bel |

Mine is *sports*, it just looks better than everything else most of time.
A sub is a bit confusing to me, I guess on most recievers they must have some sort of dedicated output and then the sub is also powered? I don't know, probably won't get one right away anyway. |

Hmmm, that's interesting. I wonder what the pre-set for that is, I'd guess it'd emphasize greens and blues or something.
Yeah, most subs have dedicated output from the receiver and are powered seperately as well. This setup I've got is just sort of odd like that, in that it wants you to power the sub off the receiver and then power the speakers off the sub. Seems like if they'd of just gone the traditional route(as the receiver does have a dedicated output if you have a powered receiver) things would have been easier. Who knows... Bel |

I don't know, it has a bunch of other crap, movie mode, etc. The only other one I liked was called low signal, it made the color really pop but had some weird colors going on so I had to kill it.
Well, its not a big deal to me if it is good enough without it. I wish I could just go with a 2.0 or a 2.1 system but I think that real channel will be real nice, I've never done it before and everything that comes out from now on will use it, so I guess I better get with it. |

I'm not really sure what they're thinking when they make those pre-sets anyway, most people tend to just use them as their starting point to manually tweak everything(I know I did).
2.1 isn't bad at all...in fact, I had 2.0 for the longest time and it was great. Stereo sound really isn't as primitive as much audio junkies would have you believe, they can do a lot of cool stuff with it like Surround or QSound. The speaker setup on my PC is 2.1 and it kicks. Still though, as you've got a PS2, and soon an Xbox you might as well get a 5.1 setup...they can both use it, as will your future DVD or HD DVD player. 5.1 really is amazing and makes a huge difference for most movies and virtually every game. Well, I have even though of just getting a reciever and then the a real decent pair of front speakers too instead of the set. Ah, 6 or 1 and a half dozen of the other. I'm definitely going to do it though. Have already been thinking about how I'm going to set up the rear speaker so they don't look too shitty. Definitely going to but a major effort into cable management! |

They have sets of speakers that are wireless, but they're pretty expensive...and I question as to whether or not they'll fuck with your wireless internet signal, or any other signal for that matter, or not. As you'll be in a house, there are things you can, like drill holes in walls, etc. that make the wires less noticable. Right now, I use white wires and white tacks in order to keep the visibility of the shit as low as possible. I'm almost done with my living room setup...once I get that fucking HD DVD player in the mail, and setup I'll use Gen's camcorder and do a virtual tour of it and post it on the site for ya'll to see. Yeah, some of those Panasonic systems in a box have compatability with wireless, but you have to get a seperate wireless reciever and the fact that they don't have optical was just kind of a deal breaker. I figured trying to run the cables along the edge of the carpet will be the way to go for the speaker wires, they are pretty small. I have even seen that flat telephone and eithernet wires for doing that shit. My big thing will be all the wires from the console, God, before it was such a mess. I am going to get one of these stands that has like this chase where all the wires run down inside of it and out of the way. |

Ugh, yeah that kind of blows.
Yeah, or you can even go under the carpet.
That's the way to go. My new console stand has holes in the back of every shelf where you string the wires out to where ever. Makes for a much tidier setup. Bel |

It does suck, thats the one I really wanted to get too but I'll be better off in the long run getting a regular reciever. My brother has like a similar thing, its a Panasonic and the DVD went on the fritz a couple of weeks ago, sound still works but the screen is screwed up, it splits it right in the middle. Its weird. This way, if the DVD goes or vice versa you can just swap out that piece.
My last entertainment center was so bad, the cardboard back where the shelves are came off and you could see all the wires hanging down. With like four systems all those wires look really bad. I'm going to take my time with all the A/V and power cords bundle them up and hide them and stuff. |

Yup, smart man. That's the exact reason why I'll *never* buy one of those combo machines that's a TV and DVD player, or a receiver and DVD player, etc. If one thing breaks, it's over.
I know what you mean, my last one was like that, I had to manually cut holes in the cardboard backing to get the cords through.
Yeah, that's why I did this time around as well. It's more effort, and it's a slower process but imo it's worth it just for the hassle it saves in the long run. Bel |

I've seen some HDMI cables at Biglots... and cheap component cables. I hope you realize a regular RCA cable will work... there's nothing special about the cable itself. So just spend a few extra minutes hooking something up, instead of spending a lot more $$$ I use a "audio" cable for an AV switchbox that I got at the dollar store, it works perfect. |

I don't know about that...component cables are much, much thicker than RCA/AV cables. I would think that would let a lot of interference through, mucking up the signal. You could be right though... Bel |

Oy, my bad. I always forget about that...I rarely ever use, or even hear about, the Japanese names of most of these games. Is the Japanese version of Shinobi III any different than the US version? Bel |
