There was an actual report a while back that said something similar, but also mentioned that if you keep them in individual cases(not stacked on a spindle, which I find odd because *they come on a damn spindle*) your chances of keeping them running increase a bit. I guess the first CDs of mine that may go are the Sega CDs...but I've yet to run across a bad one yet. Bel |

I will be seriously surprised if this happens with the games sitting on the shelf. If I was playing them 24/7 for 20 years, I can imagine the laser eventually wearing down the foil in a similar way to a record being grooved by a needle. Unless the foil itself begins to break down after 20 years, I expect mine to last for quite a while. Hell, the metal pins on cartridges have actual physical contact with other metal and they have lasted for more than 30 years. |

Yeah, I think the more use a CD sees the more it's likely to degrade...almost gives one the thought of backing up the discs...but shit, with these gaming systems that's more of a hassle than anything else. Bel |

That's right, I have CDRs from the late 90s that have since stopped working while on the shelf. |

Agreed, it's the difference between pressing a CD and just plain copying one, but the idea of using a backup instead of the real thing is to minimize any damage to the original disc. Like I said though, the hassle of getting your Saturn/PSX/Xbox/etc. modded in order to make this work is more time, money and effort than it's worth, imo.

I would agree in the case of the Saturn, or PSX, but not with the xbox, It's not that hard to find someone that has a hardware modded one that help you do a softmod for Xbox, and the softmod makes it so much more usable, play DVD's from any region, use as a media center PC, FTP/Web server, etc, as well as playing dvd backups of your games, but why bother backing them up when you can just rip them to the hard drive? Once you get one, it's hard to remember what you did without one. |

True...but you make it sound like softmodding an Xbox is just as easy as 1, 2, 3. I mean, you got yours pre-modded right? I don't know how to do it, Wang doesn't know how, and if you've looked over any given forum that discusses the process there's a shitload of issues that come up. This is what I was talking about with "more hassle than it's worth". Sure, buying a pre-modded Xbox would be awesome...but doing it yourself would be more trying than anything else, I'd guess.
;) You're right though, a modded Xbox is an incredible sight to behold. I was impressed to no-end with Wang's modded Xbox. Just the sheer amount of things you can do with that PIII, 733Mhz machine is mind boggling. I wouldn't mind getting one at some point down the line...if nothing else, just to install Damn Tiny Linux and Firefox, so I could browse the net on the HDTV. Bel |

The Warriors is damn good! Man, I played that motherfucker until I beat it. Probably one of my all time favorites. Gun is good too, I've not played a whole lot of it just yet. Definitely better than all the used copies you'd see at any given store would have you believe. Bel |

Odd... I only saw one copy. The Warriors is pretty good, but too violent. I never really wanted Mercenaries, but I saw it oh so damn cheap at the pawnshop and used some store credit, but it was worth it. It's like GTA, but war themed. |

If you go to any given Blockbuster store they've got millions of used copies of it. Man, it's insane how many they have. I guess they were thinking it was going to be this huge hit or something. It's good, but it's not "a million copies to rent out" good, you know?
;) Warriors is violent, that's for sure. It's a lot of the reason why I like it too, just the pure brutality of the fighting. Plus, it's no holds barred on the language...or anything else for that matter. This is what I really love about American developers: They go for the gold and don't let anything get in the way of it. Language, violence, nudity, fuck it. ;) You've got me interested in Mercenaries now, with that GTA-like comment. I don't know what it is about the "sandbox" genre, but I love it. I played Scarface until I beat it(man, I don't know how many hours I logged, but it's gotta be over 40 easily), same with all of the GTA series on the Xbox. Bought The Godfather because it's GTA-like, will buy a 360 exclusively for GTA IV. I want to get a slim-ass PS2 just for the GTA Stories line... Bel |

It isn't as open-ended as GTA, but basicly, you are given a LOT of freedom on how you want to complete missions. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercenaries:_...uction#Gameplay |
