Though I have no real business shopping at all, I did manage to pick up two games over at this "Play N Trade" shop while taking notes for a review of the place: Gran Turismo 2(PSX) - $2.99 - Pisses me off...this is my *second* encounter trying to get this to work. The first time around I accidentally bought GT1, thinking that was the one that works with the Bleemcast! disc on DC. Took it back, but they didn't have GT2 at the time. Finally got GT2, and now realize I don't have the damn Bleemcast! disc! Argh... Syphon Filter(PSX) - $0.50 - Have heard good things about it...never played it. They had some SMS stuff for $3, boxed, like Zillion...but I just forgot to grab it when checking out. :( Bel |

You've played through Zillion before though right?! We have a Play N Trade in town as well, I snagged a handful of games from them when they first opened up, and they just haven't gotten any new retro stuff since then. They also don't give crap for retro stuff, or I would have cleared out some of my Genesis games (Mystic defender duplicate, The Tick, etc). |

Unfortunately, no. I have played it a bit in emulation, but that's about it. My SMS catalog is woefully weak, it's something I've been wanting to beef up for years now...they are just hard to find.
Yeah, they can really only sell what they buy in...and it seems like a lot of people simply aren't selling anymore. I can't really fault them for that, but it is depressing to walk in an see the same games every time.
Hmmmm, well I guess every store is different...but the one over here is pretty proud of their retro stuff and treats is really well. In fact, March was "retro" month, where they were doing 20% off all retro games(which pisses me off even more since I forgot to grab Zillion before I left). Actually, I just re-read what you said...I see what you mean, about them not giving decent buy-in credit for older games. Yeah, you're right one that. The first time I went I just traded in Xbox and PSX games and got a decent $30 for them...but then this last time I went it was mostly just older stuff and it only came out to $10. I think, though, it's a decent trade off as their retro stuff is dirt cheap(EC:CftDS for $14.99, Zillion for $2.99, etc)....but, with that said, they couldn't offer very much credit and still have those low prices. I finally landed a full time job about a month ago, and so last week... i just bought house of the dead overkill for wii. it's... something else. Still definitely house of the dead (though quite a bit more vulgar), but at the same time, very much made with consoles in mind. This is the kind of game that should be coming out more often - arcade sensibilities with console commodities. My only complaint so far is that it's a little too easy. Also, I just bought a new HDTV - thankfully it's a 32 inch, 720p max television, (I don't have room for anything bigger, or the budget for the 1080p in that size). Thanks to the small size, the Wii doesn't look completely awful on it (still just running it on composite cables - before i moved to kentucky i got component cables for my dad's wii and it just looked TERRIBLE on his 52" 1080p television). It's got a VGA input in the back as well, so I'm gonna have to fish out a dreamcast vga box from somewhere and re-live the glory days. Edited by benstylus, Apr 6 2009, 04:34 PM.

Use your Saturn pad and play through it on Kega Fusion or MEKA sometime. Once you get past the first level underground you won't be able to stop anyway. I don't even care if you use the invincibility code, just play it. I don't mean just Bel either, all of you, play Zillion, now! ;)
Yeah, and when they get something I really want locally they overcharge for it. I payed $22 for Mansion of Hidden Souls Sega CD.
The retro shop I used to work for/with has a better selection locally, and thanks to my redesign, and the owner's utter laziness, still gives equal floor space to old and new games. The local Play N Trade basically has one booth for expensive retro stuff, and a bunch of bargain bins in the middle of the store for the rest. It's almost too annoying to try to find something, but I'm still eying this boxed After Burner for the NES. |

Ok, before I even start, it's important to note that I *realize* how unbelievably irresponsible this was. Unemployed and buying stuff...just dumb, but listen to these prices first! Hit this local store called "Game Exchange"(why are all local game shops called something similar?) and saw that they had *ALL SATURN AND SEGA CD GAMES FOR $1.99 EACH". As you can imagine, I freaked the fuck out. Here's what I bagged: Saturn: Solar Eclipse Clockwork Knight Bug! Bug Too! World Series Baseball '98 Criticom World Series Baseball(I know, I know, but all three are good. I already own WSB II) Off World Interceptor Extreme Sega CD: Joe Montana's NFL Football(horrible, but something to see just due to the shitty scaling) Racing Aces Microcosm Jurassic Park Ok, so that was bat-shit crazy enough...here's what else I went nuts on($4.90 a piece): Genesis: After Burner II(not only complete, but still has the damn tab on the case. Game Gear: Ninja Gaiden(you know it baby!) Chicago Syndicate(starring EC's Larcen Tyler) Sports titles were all $1.90 and buy one get one free. Picked up three for a friend and one for myself: Genesis: Madden 98 Yes....*98* on the Genesis...can you believe it? I hate Madden, but I own part 1...and it was always my plan to get the first and last of the series, just to compare. So I have the original Madden...and now Madden 98. I traded in some stuff and got $10 credit...not great, but knocked down the $45.01 total to a respectable(and less crazy) $35.01. Anyway...that's that...I am ashamed, but hell, *who* could have passed up those deals...I mean really... Bel BTW Scott, you've got some Sega CD/Saturn/Genesis cases coming your way at some point. ;) |

Will do. Wasn't there a sequel...and didn't this game show up in the arcade at some point?
Yeesh, yeah, I remember you saying that. The way I look at stuff like that is "Well, it's still less than what they wanted for it back when it came out!" ;)
Yeah, that layout is different than the one up here that I visit. They keep all the retro stuff by the registers and don't have any bins for it. Then again, they may not have nearly as much as yours does. Bel |

Congrats...in this market that's a real achievement!
I saw the "grindhouse-style" trailer for it, but that's about it.
Good deal, that's a solid set!
A buddy of mine found a deal on Wii component cables for $4.95 a piece and ordered me a set. I have to say that the games look MUCH better at 480p...it was almost unbearable at 480i on just my 34" CRT HDTV.
Better yet, go out and buy/build yourself an HTPC and use that for its input...1280X720(720p) looks great on Windows...and man, so does MAME Plus(and free Blu-Ray rips!). ;) Bel |

I don't know, I mean it just looked so jaggy and ugly with the component cables on my dad's set... I think I'm probably better off leaving it in composite. Then again, on a smaller tv with a lower max resolution, it might not be quite as bad. |

Are you sure you had the Wii set to display at 480p? You have to set that in the Settings menu. Also, not all games support 480p and widescreen modes...which was just fucking brilliant on Nintendo's part. They could have forced all games to run at 480p...but I guess that was just a little too much effort. ;) Put'em up on GameTZ. Maybe one of those snobbish elitists will take it off your hands. Man, I hate that fucking place... Bel |

Well, I've traded a few HD DVD discs on GameTZ(one of the few times a user has "lowered" themselves to actually do some trading, rather than just applying a blanket "no" to every offer submitted), so the HD discs *are* worth something. I mean, hell, one Blu-Ray for one Xbox, DC, Genesis, Sega CD, etc. game would be more than enough in my eyes. ;) Bel |

Every now and again I hit E-bay and look for Afterburner 32X complete in box. So far every time I've done this I haven't even found a single non-mangled copy. Last night I found this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=360144692358 So I bought it. Since the local swap shops don't give a crap about 32X games, I'll be putting up my Afterburner 32X with manual and photoshopped insert over a generic box for trade. You can see the trade item on the left here: http://www.gamepilgrimage.com/library_pics/32xcartmanual06.JPG and bottom middle here: http://www.gamepilgrimage.com/library_pics/SegaCD32XGames06.jpg |

I ended up making it up actually because I couldn't find an insert. Up close it doesn't look great because the printer I used couldn't keep the quality sharp. |

I traded Sonic Unleashed today, not because I don't like it, but because I tend to trade new games before they drop too much in value. In exchange, plust $8, I got: Archon (Boxed) Crystalis (Complete) Iron Sword (Boxed) Super Mario/Duck Hunt (Cart Only) and the owner of FX Video Game Exchange locally threw in the box for TMNT II: TAG, which upgraded my copy to complete. Not a bad exchange I'd say, though I thought Crystalis was a side scrolling adventure title like the action scenes in Zelda II. My mistake. |

I just don't get the whole "complete" thing anymore. To me, the cart/game is all I really need. Even when I do get a complete game I read the manual and look at the box insert *once*, then chuck them both in a box, never to be seen again. I just can't see tracking down boxes or manuals for non-complete games I own...unless it's one of those games where you really need the manual(like Miracle Warriors or something). That's just me though...I know a lot of classic gamers fall in to the "collectors" category. Now, don't get me wrong though, I do enjoy finding a complete title...but I've never passed up a game just because it didn't have the box/manual. When I was younger, having something complete really did mean something to me...but as I've gotten older it's just become less and less important. I mean, hell, I even went so far as to ditch all of my Saturn, Sega CD and Genesis cases(just kept the manuals and inserts)... As for Crystalis, you should really give it a shot, the story, from what I remember of it, was awesome...and the gameplay wasn't bad at all. Really wild, especially when you figure it's an action/adventure RPG by *SNK*. Bel |

With Genesis, NES and SNES, I can stand cart only because they have top labels and can be stacked on a shelf on their ends in a book-like fashion. With nearly every other kind of cart out there I basically ought not even buy it if I don't have a box to display it with. Once it goes on the shelf I'll rarely remember I have it because I won't ever see the label. I feel the same way about carts without top labels and CDs without cases as I do about Roms and ISOs, they're too far out of sight to be in mind. Seeing that big colorful box of TMNT II makes me want to play it, whereas I've owned the cart for years and haven't ever wanted to before. It's really that simple for me. If somebody would make a really nice computer catalog with box art and readable manuals, I'd probably skim through them until I found something I wanted to play. Screenshot catalogs aren't enough for me though, as Mame and Gens 32 have such features and I get board of looking at the menus. |
