TMNT is awesome, I even did a comparison with the latest GBA emulator and found the GBA player superior in every way. It just runs choppy on the Mamebox and all of the dithering that was covered up with the GBA player's filters is plain as day.

Hmmmm, I don't remember it being choppy back when I did the quick review for it, but all of the emulators kill the effects set up for SDTV viewing. Same goes for Saturn S-Video and emulation, boy. ;)

Arnold Palmer I was surprised by, the graphics are great but I see no resemblance to Great Golf at all. I haven't checked to see if the courses are the same, but the gameplay is definitely radically different between the two games. I'd call Arnold Palmer a sequel to Great Golf, but I just don't see how it could be called identical with better graphics.

Really? It looks to use the exact same engine, with the exact same view and screen cuts. Have you noticed how they both render the environment, etc?

Quake is awesome. In fact, I can't wait to get an all new comparison movie of it running next to the Saturn and N64 games. Sadly, GL Quake doesn't work for me, possibly because of XP 64 or some setting, I haven't troubleshot it yet.

It's possible. You may also try updating GL Quake, if you're just using the one off the disc. Also, I would recommend using apps like Quake Runner or Quake On to make various tweaks(I prefer Quake On, but then again, I like the little floating head).

I'm not usually for ultra violence, but with Wolverine I'm just so sick of how watered down his character has become. The guy has freaking six blades the size of his forearm, and all he ever fights is robots and women in the cartoons/movies. It's about time they got it right. Putting him up against machete fighters in the demo shows me that the developers have some understanding of what Wolverine's claws would function like. Wolverine isn't about posing in scary looking stances as much as he is about detective work and eviscerating people.

Another thing that impressed me was the damage modeling they did...that was just plain-fucking-awesome.

Is this because of the M/KB thing?

Indeed. I just can't do shit with that 360 controller on virtually any FPS, and most 3rd person shooters.

Quote:

Man what are you going to do when all shooters focus on the 360 controller instead of a PC setup?

...play the PC version, where they don't.

Quote:

It's pretty much already happening, but with Crysis 2 and Rage focusing on consoles it's only going to get worse.

Naw, it'll either be all or nothing. *No* developer is dumb enough to put out an FPS on the PC that either doesn't let you use the mouse/keyboard, or makes it so that gameplay is better with the 360 controller. What you've got to understand is that now the PC has an official controller, developers can actually program a game for it...where as, before, there were *thousands* of controllers for the PC, none of which had any real official support. With the 360 controller working with Windows, and made by MS, every game dev. can easily integrate it with their game(FPS or not).

Quote:

I draw the line at shooters that allow me to fully customize my controls, which is why Battlefield 1943 won't be played by me. If I can make all shooters play with a familiar setup then I'll play them sometime, if I have to relearn where the freaking reload button is I won't bother.

This is why I use the same config for every FPS game. I've yet to see one PC FPS that doesn't allow you to reconfigure the entire keyboard. I've seen issues with the 4th and 5th buttons on my mouse, but never on the keyboard. Granted, you have to set it up for every new game...but you do it exactly *once* and never dick with it again.

Iron Man feels like a Space Harrier game to me for some reason. It just seems like a suped up Planet Harriers, that's what I loved about it the most. Then I just love flight combat games in general, and this one is as action packed as they get.

Glad to hear it...I really dig it as well. I was happy to hear that Sega will allow Secret Ladder to do the second one as well, ought to be quality.

It's sort of the same deal as Altered Beast on SMS, choppier animation is the worst part next to only being able to play as Axe Battler and it only being single player. I like it because it replicates the arcade level designs more closely than the Genesis adaptation did. That puts it in the same class as Shadow Dancer on SMS in my mind.

Oh, that's right, I have played it...I remember AB being the only playable character.

Quote:

It isn't terrible, but it sure felt that way when I first bought it because I loved the Arcade title so much. I consider Run Saber on SNES a spiritual sequel. The gameplay is freaking terrible in both games compared to Strider proper.

I had only seen the arcade version, never actually played it until the Genesis version came out, so I didn't have that much issue with it. The issues came after I played the Genesis version. ;)

Easily, I've owned it cart only for some time and this is the first time I've landed it complete. Now if I could just find Target Earth and MUSHA complete I'd have every shooter I ever played and loved on the Genesis CIB.

I've been going through the carts that I now have in my fancy, new Genesis storage units and just picking out a few carts from every drawer...just stuff I haven't played in a long while, or almost ever. Sadly, Final Zone was one of those(isn't that TA, or is TA the sequel?). I honestly don't remember ever playing this one. It's pretty hip(as most Genesis owners will agree), but I don't like how one of the AI's main strategies is to just simply ram you when they get frustrated. Still, pretty hip.

I snagged Twisted Metal (Complete, Longbox) for PS1 for $8.65 today. It's an okay game for the time, but I'm going to have a hayday showing off these 1995 releases of the PS1 and comparing them to Saturn and 3DO games. I also got a great idea for printing top labels on card stock for what few PS1 games I end up with that use Saturn cases. I don't have enough room on my shelf for those tall cases to stand up, so I have them laying on one side, so the top needs a label like these early long boxes do.

Ugh, more long boxes...I hate the PSX versions because I can't just strip the insert and manual out, then ditch the case...I have to keep the entire thing.

On TM1: I like it...but the AI pisses me off, much like it does on Twisted Metal 2.

All for Drkstlkr...

Uh, are you sure?

Marvel vs. Capcom 2 (XBLA)- God dammit, why do I keep getting suckered into this game. I mean it's good, but it's so overhyped and I fell for it again. ARGGGGHHH! *Shoots holes in the ceiling* 7/10

Well, at least you didn't get raped on pricing getting it on XBLA. The DC, PS2 and Xbox versions are outrageously high. Question: Why get this on XBLA, when you got Blaz Blu on PS3?

Quote:

There is a disc version of the game coming soon with part 2 on it. So renting it might not hurt the wallet too much. I wish that I knew it was coming before though. :(

I saw this last night, and as soon as it drops I *will* buy it! I love how they are doing this with some games because I am SICK AND FUCKING TIRED OF GETTING FUCKED ON XBLA GAMES I CAN'T SELL OR RETURN. God, virtually *every* XBLA title I've bought...I eventually end up hating and never playing again. Pisses me off to no end. TMNT: TiTR will probably be one of the last XBLA titles I ever get...and hell, I'm thinking about waiting and seeing if they put it and the original TMNT on one disc for retail shelves...

The difference is that I can choose between S-Video quality or Composite on my Saturn, it's my choice. The GBA player gives me even more options with its filters. Emulation gives me nothing until somebody writes some filter that will bog down my single core Mamebox anyway. :{

I see what you're saying, I didn't see it the first time because AP actually shows the whole field and then fills it out with trees and Great Golf renders the entire screen rather slowly. That and the power meter for the gameplay are really similar, but AP diverges significantly with its return meter mechanic that determines whether or not you slice the ball. The meter rises and you have to hit a button to determine power, and then it lowers and you have to nail it perfectly at the beginning to hit the ball straight. It is a much more complex mechanic for Golf than Great Gold required, more "simish" I guess. That, and the much improved rendering technique makes Tournament Golf seem more like a sequel than a simple adaptation of Great Golf.

Cool, I will have to check that out. I just wish I had an old 3DFX machine hanging around, or better yet a Matrox Millennium machine. I'd use my VGA to Component converter to record footage from that to make some real comparison videos of 90's PC gaming versus console. I'd also like an Amiga though, but it's going to be a very long wait.

I thought you liked FPS on Dreamcast. Granted I find FPS easier to control on Dreamcast, but still. Now, one thing I *cannot* do is aim with my right thumb, every FPS I play I have to set it to the stupid "southpaw" setting so I can aim with the left thumb like God intended. I guess this whole right left stick thing is catering to the M/KB crowd just like the "invert Y axis" option does.

They seem to have forgotten that for the first two decades in gaming, flight stick style controls with joysticks in 3D games was "normal" and up being up and down being down was "inverted". These two lack of standards drive me crazy in FPSs. Every joystick and gamepad put the controls on the left up until FPS came to consoles and somebody screwed up the standards.

Yeah, I doubt they'll take out the full customization options of FPS games that were designed around consoles and controllers. I bet that targeting reticule size and auto aim function starts catering more to the 360 pad though. We won't be seeing pixel wide reticules like Battlefield 2 had in PC versions of console shooters I'd bet. Have you seen the way that Flight Simulator X takes the 360 controller and assumes you want to use it if it's hooked up? That's what I'm talking about.

Oh really? I guess Secret Level wasn't disbanded then after all, that's awesome. Here's hoping that Sega will let them finish Golden Axe Beast Rider out with a multi-player sequel some day. I'll put that one on my calendar for when pigs fly and Shenmue 3 gets announced.

Final Zone is just Final Zone, it's made by Wolf Team. The sequel is on the Turbo CD and is made by Telenet, the company that made Black Hole Assault and Heavy Nova. It's called Final Zone II oddly enough. Target Earth is the Japanese port of a game called Assault Suits Leynos. Cybernator on the SNES is a port of Assault Suits Valkyn, and Assault Suits Leynos II came out on Saturn in Japan. That's all of those games from NCS as far as I know.

Well, the tower of awesome can handle 12 inch 3DO long boxes, it can sure as hell handle early PS1 cases. ;)

Your not kidding on the difficulty of TM1 though, between that and the really shoddy car controls I doubt I'll be picking this on up again until Gideon's ready to play it with me.

Well the SNES version of MMPR: The Movie is different from the Genesis version, but then again I would pick that version up too if it's not too expensive due to nostalgia. After all, I did get Judge Dredd again... I don't know why... ;)

There was an interesting thing about getting MVC2 on XBLA besides it being released first since the PS3 version got delayed. After playing demos for both versions I discovered that I was doing better with the X360 controler due to the buttons feeling a little bit closer (Capcom stupidly removed the option to put both Punch or kick buttons in one function) and I was having a hard time pulling off moves with the PS3 for some unknown reason. So the X360 version ended up being the better choice.

I agree with you on the XBLA games. Although most of the ones I have are awesome (Garou, Dishwasher, etc.) there's a piece of junk that I regret buying for the rest of the week. (Prince of Persia Classic, Double Dragon, etc.) If we could sell some of these things back, I wouldn't have to think about it so hard. At least I've been lucky recently.

TMNT: Turtles in Time (SNES): I really like about this version. I like the music, the challenge and the speed the best in this one so far. For me, this is how it stands: SNES>XBLA>Arcade. I need to get The Hyperstone Heist to figure out which one of these is truly the way to go. But I still wonder how this game is considered to be the best beat 'em up ever when games like Streets of Rage 2, Violent Storm and Capcom's Licensed brawlers have much better controls and gameplay then any TMNT game.

Rented Killzone 2 (PS3): Oh wow, I thought this game was gonna suck! They must've fixed the aiming because I can actually shoot my enemies now, unlike in the demo.

Turtles in Time and Hyperstone share many of the same levels but have significantly different overall level structure *and* gameplay. Consider them two 16-bit iterations of the Turtles' beat-em ups and you'll be on the right track. Hyperstone does not replace TMNT IV and vice verse. They're different games with different strengths and different gameplay that play and look very similar to the casual eye.

Shadow Complex (XBLA)- Oooookaaaay. I have to force myself to stop playing this one. Shadow Complex is an obvious throwback to the Metroid series (One achievement is called Justin Bailey) and it's about as addictive as Zero Mission, Fusion and Super were and still kind of are. I'm going to have to say that this game might have just beat Dishwasher for best XBLA game. I'm so glad I was still at home to download it. Give it a shot.
9-10/10 for now.

JD, despite being a Probe-made game, is actually pretty good. I have the Genesis version and have played all the way through it. I can't remember if the SNES version has a Mode 7 thing going on for the bike ride, or it just does the sidescrolling shooter thing that the Genesis version does...

With so many of these XBLA games showing up on Steam, Amazon Digital or just coming out on disc for the PC, I've really started curbing what little purchases I was making. Getting burned on probably 90% of what I've bought on XBLA, I just can't make myself pay for that shit anymore. Not everything has been horrible though, I mean Assault Heroes is just fucking awesome! Still, I think the general majority of my MS Points will be going towards DLC for titles I already enjoy or Indie Games.

Now, as for game purchases...with the PC being my only real gaming outlet right now, I've tried to make that my main priority when I'm out in the wild and looking to grab something. Though my PC game library is already obscenely large, when I come across new titles for $3, I just can't resist. Came across the Carmageddon trilogy at a local Half Priced Books for $2.99 a piece, and then 20% off that(how can you loose?), I grabbed Braid for $5 off Steam(for the soundtrack, but the game will be my bonus) and then found Top Gear 2 on Genesis for $2.99.

Not having the Genesis out to where I can use it, I have been enjoying Top Gear 2 via Gens. Talk about good stuff, this is up there with Lotus II and Jaguar on Sega CD. I normally don't like 16-bit racers, but man this is good stuff. Soundtrack is really hip too, I'll definitely be adding pieces from it to the Sound{e}scapes section at some point.

Y'all need a Five Below in your areas... got these PC games from them:

Rainbow Six Vegas 2
The Club
Prince of Persia (new one)
Jerricho

all for $5 new. Maybe one or two others... Not too bad. :)

They must get their stock from the same place Half Priced Books does, it has all of those games you mentioned, for similar prices(The Club was, I think, $4.68). I would have attempted it, but I just can't stand the fact that you're timed on *everything* you do. Granted, the mouse would help with the aiming but I still just can't see myself getting in to it.

Jericho is damn good, the story is just incredible, as are the graphics. One of my all time favorites, for sure; I've played through it twice now.

Batman: Arkham Asylum (PS3-Yeah, get used to seeing that a lot until winter vacation at least.): I kind of compare this game to Bioshock in the way that it's one of my favorite single-player games of the year that's pretty much flawless until you realize the game has the replayability of The Passion of Christ (except that you can at least enjoy both games).
I was very happy with Batman:AA overall. 9/10

That's all I have for now, but I'm about to pick up Ultimate Alliance 2 from home... oh shit. I just realized... it's an Activision game. *Proceeds self-hate*

Edit: Oh yeah, I also bought the ultimate "gramer" game.
Madden 10 (PS3):I don't know why I bought it. I mean, I enjoyed it when I rented it from Blockbuster. But still it's fucking Madden. I don't know, maybe it was to fill in the void of watching my dad play it on his computer or something. I guess it's a guilty pleasure for me. Speak of this to no one! ;)

Soul Calibur: Broken reason to play it (PSP): Namco, what the fuck is this? The single-player mode are a joke. What am I supposed to do, play online- oh wait! Shit, that's right! It's the PSP! There's no online option on a PSP except a few RPGs and shooters. No fighters. Not even Kratos could save this game from being in the running for my "SAGY" award. 3/10

Why do we hate Activision? They're to EA what Microsoft is to Sony. Their recent comments about gamers being stupid are just true, did I miss something about them brutally overworking their employees, using their media clout to shut down smaller more innovative developers, or any other successful attempt at anti-competitive business tactics?

Yes. Brutal Legend damn near got killed thanks to them. And Bobby Kotick is to me what Kanye West is to... well a lot of people now.

I never said we. I've personally expressed my extreme dislike for them before, but I don't talk about them all that much because I don't really see the point. I would just piss me off.

Gotcha. Just like MS vs Sony I see Activision and EA as *the* problem for small developers. But all of the small developers combined couldn't do to EA what Activision has done. So... yeah. Yay lesser weevil.
Speaking of which, I just scored XO: Wolverine for 360 (Complete) for meine Geburtstag. Installing it to my HDD now, will play it for the next several hours.

I also scored Batman: Arkham Asylum! These are two games that seriously renew my hope in action games for the future.

I got my HD 4770 today... a lot, lot quieter than my Radeon HD4670... what a fucking piece of shit that was. The thing had this tiny ass fan, and was as loud as a dustbuster.

The HD4770 I got was the one that looks like the one showed off when the card was first announced, it's dual slot. Along with a new soundcard that rocks, but a bitch to get working, some Arctic Silver 5 for the CPU fan, and some new cooler looking brackets in the back of the case.

Yeah, im addicted.

Brutal Legend, Uncharted 2, Borderlands, Smackdown vs. Raw '10, and Tekken 6 are on my buy list. That's $300+ worth of games. I chose the wrong time to be a broke-ass mofo. :D

They left out Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in Time, but listing those five above already blew my mind, so maybe they were just trying to stop my mind from completely exploding. I'm going to buy SVR '10 and Tekken 6 now and wait on the rest until I get a job. I think I'm gonna start looking after class today.

Got a few games in for my birthday...thought I'd share:
(note: all links lead to demos for the PC or 360 versions of the game)

Lost Planet(PC) - Am loving, loving, loving it. This is shaping up to be one of my favorite games of all time.

Call of Juarez(PC) - Addmittedly, I bought both this and LP at that GoGamer Labor Day sale, sort of a gift to myself(come on, at $1 and $5.90, could you blame me!?).

007: Quantum of Solace(PC) - Loved the demo and was thrilled that it ran on my "dinosaur". Have a feeling I am really going to enjoy this one, once I finally get around to installing it. Another "Games for Windows Live" title, so expect some harassment when I finally do get it installed. ;)

Might and Magic: Dark Messiah - Limited Edition(PC) - Got it on the 360, got it on PC, they're actually very different! If you like Oblivion, but were sort of put off with just have vast and overwhelming it was...this may be the game for you. It's a lot like the Elder Scrolls series, but a bit more linear and focused on the main quest. Really good stuff! Grab the demo if you get a chance, it's available via Steam, if you need some help finding it. Installing this one immediately!

Braid(PC) - Was on sale for $4.99 on Steam, bought it for myself simply for the soundtrack. Thank God that's all I wanted it for because the PC version SUCKS. Can't change the res, can't configure a controller, it's a fucking joke.

Watchmen: The End is Nigh Parts 1 and 2(360) - I really dig this one, despite its minor issues. Oddly enough, I liked the demo for part 2 more than the demo for part 1, but for the full version, I seemed to enjoy part 1 more than part 2. Anyway, still wonderful as a whole, and only $19.99(on Amazon, where my dad got it) which is $10 less than what they want for the DL version...(there's also a PC version available)

Turrican(Genesis) - My mom grabbed this one for me off Amazon, as I had talked about in the thread in the OSSS of the forums. Should be here at some point soon. Can't wait, even though I can't actually play it...just to see the original box, manual, etc. This one had sentimental value attached to it, which is why I wanted it complete(normally I don't care).

Joe and Mac(Genesis) - Another one I bought for myself(I know, I know) off Amazon...but it was SO cheap(again, see more in the Amazon thread in the OSSS of the forum) and it's SO hard to find in the wild, and so expensive on ebay! I couldn't not buy it!

All in a all, not a bad birthday. This year's been rough, I won't lie to you, loosing my job and other issues have really just been whipping my ass.

I have a tale of two games put to good use, Batman Arkham Asylum and XO: Wolverine. I received them both as gifts for my birthday, one from my wife and the later from my mom. I beat them both in less than two weeks and decided to trade them in or sell them. I got $84 at the local FX (yes, even though they're bastards) so I took it. My wife spent $50 on Batman and my mom spent $30 on Wolverine, so in the interest of picking them up again down the road for $8-12 each it was a no brainer.

I waited a week, and picked up Tomb Raider: Anniversary, which I returned today and only lost $3 on. That game is *not* the original Tomb Raider. I happened to ask the manager/clerk for the third time whether they had any 360 Elites traded in. I had already confirmed with him twice before this that I wanted to be called as soon as one was. He finally bothered to mention to me that they in fact did have an Elite in the back. After a conversation with the owner I confirmed that I could buy the 120GB HDD off that Elite for $99 and trade my 20GB in for $35.

So, long story short, I got a 120GB HDD (with all of my files transfered), Newmann Haas Indy Car Racing and Top Gear 2 (Cart only, $4.27) for Genesis for the price of two games that were going to rot on my shelves until I pick them up again for $20 total.

Indy Car and Top Gear 2, unless y'all didn't catch it in the Genesis section, are actually very good racers. Indy Car is using a mix of polygonal buildings and grounds like Hard Driven or Kawasaki Superbike, and the AI seriously works to keep you from passing them. Top Gear 2 is just fun and has relatively smooth sprite transitions to simulate scaling.

Road Runner: Death Valley Rally for $6. I had the box and manual because my brother in law had the game when he was a kid and traded it cart only. So I figured I'd give the SNES' answer to Sonic a whirl. Well, it is fast, but man is it not entertaining.

Just went nuts and payed $39.39 to some British reseller for Military Madness for Turbo Grafx-16 complete. By complete, I mean I bought it with the original cardboard case and shrink wrap, it was only $10 more than the jewel case only copies I could find and dang it I've wanted this game for nearly two decades.
