Assassin's Creed 2 (Rental for X360): What this? This game is actually... good. I'm shocked since the first one sucked so hard. I guess I'll stop calling this one Ass Creed II. Now it's so far a very good start, but we'll see if it can keep it up for the rest of the time I have the game. |

Assassin's Creed 2 (X360) The first Assassin's Creed was a beautiful nightmare. It looked pretty, but it wasn't worth shit on the inside with terrible pacing and horrible protagonist (Altair, not Desmond). It gave you necessary abilities and took them away forcing you to plow though a weak fighting system for the beginning portion of the game after the introduction of every ability that you could have. Assassin's Creed 2 fixes all of that crap. Ezio is a much more likable protagonist, the pacing is much better with more variety, and you aren't crippled in the beginning of Ezio's quest. The combat system is still weak since like sheath said, you can counter your enemies easily for the win. I liked Assassin's Creed 2 because outside of the simple combat, the rest of the game gets it right for the most part. The stealth, platforming and assassination's work just fine. There is plenty to do in the open world, and while the game for the most part is easy, the overall package still manages to very entertaining. If you want a game that is concentrated on the art of combat, then this one's not for you. But if you want play around on Italy, assassinate fools and just chill with a mostly stress-less game (some parts can be aggravating) then you might like this game very much. My score- 8 out of 10. Points of for the weak combat but I found the game addictive and entertaining regardless. Next Review... Bayonetta. Edited by DarcSeven, Feb 3 2010, 04:26 PM.

Smash TV (Boxed, $14.02) for SNES. Ah, another great game for the tower of awesome, and I don't even have a working SNES. Since I'm pretty sure the Genesis version is a port of this (as most multiplatform 16-bitters were) it'll make for a good comparison. It will also sooth my guilt when I play it via emulation with Bel. |

Kaze No Densetsu (The Legend of) Xanadu (Complete) for PC-Engine DUO 19.00. -edit- It came in and in excellent condition. I played it a bit last night. It is an RPG with sidescrolling action sequences much like Golvellius Valley of Doom. I bought it principally because it looked great in emulation and seemed to be an entertaining game, plus it has a cheat code that lets me play all of the action sequences and watch all the cutscenes. The RPG gameplay is, strange, you fight by running into enemies, button presses don't seem to do anything. You just run into them and they bounce off of you until they die. Xanadu II has a full walkthrough on Gamefaqs, but this one does not, so I have no idea where to go or what to do as it is all in Japanese. It'll make a great showcase for the PCE/TG16/SCD's added color palettes someday, if I ever get around to posting media just for games I like that have no direct comparison. Rad Racer (Cart Only) and Willow (Cart Only) for NES, $5. -edit- Rad Racer was and is an Outrun clone, so I will probably do a full comparison page for the two games (8-bit only) in the near future. Willow is a Zelda-like Adventure title that I remember being very involved and story driven back in the day. I recall turning into different animals to get to new areas in a very Legacy of Kain Blood Omen ilk. Hopefully this one doesn't start doing the whole "guess the random town to run back to" thing that ruined Crystalis for me. Edited by sheath, Feb 24 2010, 07:37 AM.

Miracle Warriors (Complete with Map, $12.00) for SMS and Final Fantasy (Cart Only, as usual, $10.99) for NES. After nearly completing Miracle Warriors yesterday I decided I really wanted the map too, see the Trading thread if anybody wants my current copy with the printed map I've been using. Final Fantasy was a throw in to drop the average cost of shipping to $2.50 each, plus I've only actually seen the game in emulation. It seems like this game is really important to people too, like world religion important. If I manage to play through it I guess I'll figure out why. |

Despite Sega being Sega, I did get Yakuza for $55 after I got old-school and washed some cars. I looked at the list of things cut and decided, "Fuck it. I'm not letting it go like Metroid Trilogy did." I don't have that suspicion with FFXIII and God of War 3 so I'm holding off on them for a while. |

Bayonetta (X360) Review You are Bayonetta. An Umbran Witch with top class fighting ability that features an arsenal of weapons and techniques. The rest of the story is just really weird. All you need to know is that there are a lot of angels that want you dead and you’re gonna make them wish they took up another hobby. What’s it all about? It’s a very in depth brawler where you beat, slice or shoot the hell out of everything that stands in your way. Bayonetta has a large number of moves and weapons to use in a combat system that should satisfy any fan of the genre. With the ability to slow down time after a successful dodge, you almost have free reign with your unfortunate enemies. Graphics- The graphics are very good with bright colors and good looking character models. The framerate is mostly solid as long as you’re playing on the X360. The PS3 version was not so lucky and tends to chug more with longer load times. You may have some issue when it comes to character design as you may find Bayonetta very odd looking. Sound- The sound effects are good and besides Enzo (who’s annoying) the voice acting is cheesy in a good way. The music would be quite good if it wasn’t so repetitive. It becomes abusive along the way. Control- Excellent. All of Bayonetta’s actions can be performed with no problem. When you hit a button, it will immediately happen. AI- The AI is relatively solid but it isn’t relentless. You should be able to see most moves coming on the easier difficulties. The game can get difficult on normal or higher. Replay Value- High. The game has multiple difficulties and upgrades with a well done New Game +. Really, it’s just fun to kick the shit out of things. It’s almost arcade like in that regard. Tips for better gaming experiences: I would say start off on a lower difficulty in order to get the hang of things. Just remember to unequip the item that they assign to you to get rid of the auto-combos. You can’t learn to fight properly with this crutch. It works well for your mom, though. Believe me. I’ve seen it with my own eyes. ;) Buy the second pair of Fire/Lightning Gauntlets as soon as possible. Lightning hands and Fire feet are awesome! :D My Rating: 90 (out of 100)- It’s incredibly fun throughout with a few throwbacks to previous Sega games and games that the creators worked on. Bayonetta ranks up there with the best of the action genre. Next Review: Mass Effect 2 Edited by DarcSeven, Mar 19 2010, 07:42 PM.

Snagged Hal's Hole in One Golf (Boxed, $4.12) for SNES, I remember Gamepro TV showing this game as a perfect example of how advanced the SNES was, and EGM's February 1991 issue page 86 shows pictures of it rendering 3D trees in the third person views! It, ah, does none of that, it just uses a really low color Mode 7 background scaling scene to preview the courses, and the rest of the game is entirely overhead view. But I love comparing launch Golf games for systems, they really do showcase what the system is going to be capable of rendering in still scenes. -edit- I just picked up Hyperzone ($5.95, cart only as usual) for SNES because it's a launch game and has teh Mode 7. I also picked up Bimini Run (Boxed, $3.19) for Genesis, which I just discovered thanks to the same EGM issue above renders waves and has relatively complex Boat physics gameplay for a rail shooter. In addition, Bel sent me Resident Evil 4 PC for $10 complete, and I used my lonely MS points to catch the grab of the new decade AFTER BURNER CLIMAX for XLBA! I think that's it, but I really can't wait to test out my new PCI-Express HD video capture card, I sincerely hope it will support Composite, S-Video, and Component outputs from *all* of my systems without overly blurring, screwing up the de-interlacing, or some other common nonsense. It's PCI-E man, let's get it right this time! If we do, I can actually play everything I own through my HTPC, take screenshots or videos as I like, and not have to change modes and inputs on my setup to get the job done. Man, Bimini Run is fucking great. Lots of speech, LOTS of parallax scrolling and all sorts of nifty effects. It's got that awesome piece of music that I love as well. Give it a shot via emulation, I think you'll dig it. Bel |

I did play it in Fusion before I took the plunge. Unfortunately I haven't actually purchased it yet. The local FX has it for $2 cart only, I'm hoping I can get the relatively sun bleached box and insert with that tomorrow. I can't believe I never played this one before, it's all over the 1991 magazines! |
