I've honestly had it with a lot of those XBLA titles. Seems like every time I buy one it's a total disaster. The full game is nothing like the demo. They pick the best level, put it on the easiest setting(which, most times, you can't access in the full version) and give you just enough to make it seem like that's what it's going to be all about. The fact that you can't trade them pisses me off the most. My last two purchases though(one free, due to some MS points MS sent my way when they canceled XBL 1.0) have been a phenomenal value: Perfect Dark and Neo Geo Battle Coliseum. I bought both quite some time ago and have been playing the *fuck* out of them every chance I get. Perfect Dark, though awesome, is a real motherfucker of a game that pisses me off to no end. "Agent" difficulty is a push over, "Special Agent" is ok but you miss out on the one to two additional objectives that Perfect offers...and "Perfect Agent"...is just unbelievably impossible. What pisses me off the most is that you can only use cheats on the current level you've saved on or already beating...negating any real reason to use them. Perfect difficulty is actually tolerable with the "Jo Shield", I wouldn't mind going through the entire game like that...but no, first I have to absolutely get raped. Virtually every level has me going through them ten to twenty times in an effort to beat it the "right way". The things Rare imposes on the player, while absolutely fucking them up that ass with the overly harsh AI(and the fact that Jo can, at most, take about 6 hits before she dies...mind you there are NO SHIELDS or health refills at that difficulty). It's almost game-ruining...and would be if not for the other difficulties. I had been busting my ass to get through the game on all difficulties...and am currently on the Airforce One level on Perfect, and am stuck on the last level on the other two difficulties. I still chip away at it though...and all for just $10. NGBC is just a riot, I highly recommend it to *any* NG fighter fan. It's like playing the KoF games with a cast you actually want to use. Man, there are just so many fucking quality characters. I've been really digging my Ryo and Mr Big combo, though I've got my eye on quite a few others I'd like to start looking in to. Not living in Japan, I never got to see this one in the arcade...and not owning a PS2, I never got to try that port(though, oddly, it's built on the Naomi board so you'd think a Dreamcast port would have been a no-brainer, even if it was well after the DC died). At 1080, widescreen and only $10 it was like a dream come true. Thank God it hit too, I almost bought it for $6 on the PS2. Though I do await the day this one is running in MAME, so I can use my Saturn pad, I can definitely live with it on the 360. I've actually loosened up the pad a bit while playing, so it's at a tolerable level...and I've even started playing around with using the analog stick(it's not nearly as bad as you'd think, believe it or not). In a sort of freak occurrence, one of my main gripes is that the game is actually too *easy*. Yes, you heard it right...a Neo Geo game that is too easy...not unbelievably hard as they usually are. Even on the max difficulty I easily tear through the regular opposition...the bosses, depending on who shows up, is another matter though. There are, I think, five different bosses...some are actually pretty fair during the fight, the rest are standard, cheap-ass NG fare. Anyway, just some thoughts... Bel |

R.C. ProAm (Complete, $13.58) For Master System, Wonderdog (Complete, $12.98) and Novastorm (Complete, $13.39) for Sega CD, and Novastorm (with Manual, $5.90) for 3DO. A bit much, but I had been eye balling that R.C. ProAm since last year and it finally dropped below $10. Also, Wonderdog is now a "R@RE L@@K" few of the Sega CD cardboard box titles. I hadn't realized that Jaguar XJ220 had jumped to $90 in good condition! Finally Novastorm, well, it's a rail shooter, and I love rail shooters. I do prefer a little bit more interactivity, but these play virtually just like Space Harrier, and the FMV backgrounds are top_notch. If only N64 games looked this smooth. |

Ghostbusters (New, $15) for 360. I'm going to take a break from arguing with 16-21 year-olds on Sega-16 until I finish this. |

It's damn good. Be sure to play around in the firehouse...there are all sorts of awesome things going on(and, as you gather more artifacts, they appear in there as well)! I picked myself up an early gift in honor of getting a job: Gauntlet: Dark Legend on Xbox. Finally found it for less than the $20+ that everyone seems to want for it...and it was near mint for just $7.48! Bel |

Good deal, even I'd buy it for that! I caved and bought Transformers: War for Cybertron (Complete, $21.97) for PC, and I'm waiting for some user on Goozex to get off his duff and send me Sega and Sonic Allstars Racing for 360 (I've traded Oblivion and GoW Collector's edition). |

Don't you love how much cheaper the PC version is of...well, anything? Add to it 360 controller support and better graphics/higher resolutions and it's almost a no brainer...*if* you've got the power to run the shit. I will actually own both versions of Sega and Sonic Racing for that reason: It runs smoother and looks better on the PC...but the 360 has online play and DLC. With the cost being on such opposite ends, I'll probably aim for the PC version first...;) Bel |

I've bought a couple of arcade games in the past month. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World on both XBLA and PSN for $10 each and Lara Croft and The Guardian of Light for $15. I really wish Scott Pilgrim had online play, but I recommend giving it a try. Heck, I like it so much I bought it twice. One for the home console and the other for the campus console. Lara Croft was a really big surprise. The game is really good. Definitely try that one out as well. It will have online play ready in time for the PSN release in September. I tried out Shank, but I'm really torn. It seems like it could be fun, but it also seems like it will piss me off. |

LA Machineguns / Gunblade NY comes out next week for the Wii apparently. I've just ordered it off Amazon, here's hoping it's at least half as good as my nostalgia thinks it is. |

Gen, Grimshade and I used to play both every time we did that "unlimited play" deal at GameWorks. It's good stuff, for sure, but I think it's going to loose a lot without the rumbling baseboards and machine gun controller. They will probably have to tweak the game to be a bit harder too, as the Wiimotes will be able to move about the screen so much faster than the machine guns could...if not, I'll bet the game is a push over. I'll probably just wait and play it through that Model 2 emulator with the mouse and whatnot. Bel |

I snagged Cliffhanger (Complete) for Sega CD and Tokyo Highway Battle (Complete) for PS1. Total $10.80. Cliffhanger is friggin tough in the snowboarding scenes! Tokyo Highway Battle plays a little better than Ridge Racer, but not nearly as well as Tokyo Xtreme Racer on Dreamcast. |

Yeah, that's what really kills it for me with Cliffhanger: The difficulty during the snowboarding. It's a shame too, because it looks almost as good Batman Returns' driving levels... Bel |

gunblade ny/la machineguns arrived in the mail the other day... and when you factor out that it doesn't massively rumble like the arcade version (causing your hands to go numb after about 5 minutes), it's everything I wanted it to be. No online play, but to Wii owners that's hardly anything new, and my connection is so spotty I can't play online anyway. I REALLY hope it sells well enough for Sega to consider porting some of their other light gun titles... I want a home port of Maze of Kings. Both of the Rail Chase games would be good too. And let's not forget Let's Go Jungle! Really though, it would be awesome if the stars would align in license-land in order to bring home both of Sega's Jurassic Park light gun games. I'd like to see a Virtua Cop compilation which gives us a home port of the excellent VC3. And we still need the original House of the Dead... the Saturn port is UGLY. Let's Go Jungle! would be awesome. I can't tell you how many times I played through that thing at GameWorks. You got that right about HotD...that's gotta be one of the *worst* looking Saturn games ever. It's almost like they licensed it out to Probe or some other shitty developer... Grimshade and I played through VC3 over at GameWorks one night and, you're right, it is awesome. I wasn't real thrilled with one of the Jurassic Park games...though I can't remember which one it was. Just waaaaaaaaaay too fucking short. Bel |

Not exactly a game, but I just ordered a Logitech Cordless Optical Trackman for the HTPC. I got sick of the old cheapo Logitech mouse bouncing all over the place, and I can program a bunch of common buttons onto this trackball. *And* I can play Sonic Arcade the way it was intended. *grin* I might even give Portal or Deus Ex a try if I like the way the trackball works enough. |

Halo: Reach... I think I'll just leave it at that. ;_; Thankfully, I'm enjoying it as much as the first game. I can't wait to get to the space combat mission. On an interesting note, I traded in the soul-crushingly stupid God of War III for it. God, that story was such unfathomable horseshit that it killed the game for me. >_< |

I went hog wild, because it's that time of year. In addition to the two aforementioned games I also picked up Race Drivin' (Cart Only), Stunt Race FX (Cart Only), UN Squadron (Boxed) and Vortex (Boxed) for the Super Nintendo ($31 total). I have decided to pick up every US release SFX game if I can grab it for less than $10, which most fall handily under. I decided to do this because I caught a lead in primary sources that the SFX chip is in fact what the cart loaded CPU for the much vaunted "CD-I compatible" SNES CD-ROM attachment that never surfaced and probably never existed. So that explains the bad purchases. Race Drivin' is definitely playable on the SNES version, but it looks like half the framerate of the Genesis games. UN Squadron is the only SNES shooter that I have seen yet to display anything near Genesis level parallax (only 4-5 scrolls though) without slowdown. Plus, I enjoy the game quite a bit. It's a wonder that so many reviews of launch SNES games complained about slowdown with this one around. I also snagged Night Trap for 3DO (Complete, Japan) for $18.49 shipped. Let's see if I can find any "digital pornography" in High Color. ;) Edited by sheath, Sep 25 2010, 08:12 AM.
