I'm excited about this one, Ys Books 1 + 2 for Turbo CD (Complete, $35). I can't remember, but I think this is the one that Yuzo Koshiro cut his teeth on with the soundtrack. I can't wait! |

I went a bit hog wild recently picking up some things I wanted and others I needed for comparison videos. Mass Destruction (Complete, $14.98) for Saturn, Virtua Fighter 4 (Complete) for PS2, Mass Destruction, Ridge Racer and Fighting Force (Disk Only) for PS1 ($13.79), Joe Montana Football (Complete) Sega CD and Astyanax (Cart Only) for NES ($8.94). Joe Montana I decided to get because it was cheap and I wanted to try to figure out why it is constantly referred to as "bad". I've played most of the way through two exhibitions and it seems just like most other football games from the time. Astyanax I bought because I have seen it compared to Legendary Axe (which I love), so far it is slower and has annoying music. I will be working on comparison videos of Mass Destruction for PS1 and Saturn, and Fighting Force and Die Hard Arcade in the near future. Virtua Fighter 4 I just wanted to recollect in case I can ever make a comparison video with the Naomi 2 version, or a compilation video of VFs 1-5. |

I have, literally, just gone back through every message and just started posting small replies to them. They addressed to any and everyone of anyone wants to reply(keep checking back, I am posting a little, reading back, posting a little more, so on and so forth). joe montana cd is a port of an old pc football game. just like it, only blockier(just look up visual concepts on mobygames and find title). play arcade version of astyanax for a shock. i have vf4 evo for pk's ps2 and like it, but it looks like ass(i think it only runs at 480i). vf3tb on dc still my favorite, something about that uneven ground. let us know on y's soundtrack, i will download iso if he did it. Heart of the alien damn good, but a one playthrough a year sorta thing. On atari anthology, some games require 2 players, no way around it. Gotta love that game at 1080i. I always wanted to play brutal, until I actually played it. At least the cartoons are fun. Nyxquest so fucking awesome. If you find way to play with 360 controller, let me know. You NEED to try "and yet it moves", that is awesome too. I have microcosm on scd, but picked it up on pc as that's a game I'd like to see in full glory. I love fighting vipers on saturn. Foolishly traded it in towards fighters megamix, thinking it would replace fv experience(it damn good, but I still really love pure-fv). It worked out because I, later, got japanese version for $5(it dirt cheap everywhere) and it's exactly the same and has pepsi-man!!! Flashback a good one to have both versions of due to comic and realtime cinemas vs cgi fmv(plus awesome scd soundtrack). I think the genesis version of ssf2 is masterpiece: 40 megs, awesome graphics(large sprites, unreal color and shading with little dithering) and rock-solid sound. Plus, with that genesis controller, it plays like whipped dream. Thank god for game re-releases, drives price down a lot of the times. Look at ff2 on snes, used to be $70+ and with all 50,000 ports and re-releases it down to $20! I need to get to demo for good vs evil on xbla, I hear it damn good. I getting more into these hd remixes ever since rez. I thought psx doom was the absolute best version of the game under the windows version. The colored lighting, absolute darkness in certain areas and soundtrack(my god, that soundtrack!) Are just incredible. Just wish resolution was higher. They tried to port it to pc(calling it "psx doom) but it misses the mark by miles(was horribly depressing, one of my dreams is psx doom using pc graphics and framerate). Toh shin den: ura based on bat2 ons psx, so that is the one to get to compare. Psx will win just due to those awesome backgrounds, but saturn version looks great in high res mode. Both play like anus. Sam showdown sen? I want to try that ss and fatal fury on psx, the two that were ports from ng64. Have you played king of fighters on original xbox(I think it called maniax)? It damn good and FUCKING FAST(faster than mk4/g). Wonderdog gets trippy as you get further in. I keep meaning to try novastorm, I never find it around here to buy. I had no idea scd jaguar was worth so much, I see it all the time when I'm out shopping for rga. Will have to start snapping them up. Gen loves that tomb raider xbla/psn game, we played it a while back. If you like that style of shooting, play that alien breed game on xbla, it's damn good. Neutopia always looked damn good, I need to try it. Reminds me of crusader of centy. Of that game would have come out around genesis launch or sonic1 release, I think it could have really shifted tide for sega. Seems like it came out so late that no one paid attention. So sad, one of the best games on the system and most genesis owners don't't even know what it is. I had metroid fusion for gba before I got that multi-flash cart thing and ditched few gba titles I had. Pretty good stuff, but still wish they would have done super metroid port. Having so much fun with gba 2gb multi-cart thing: love gba, it was keeping 2d alive! So many qaulity titles. I will, eventually, re-open nintendo section on wag for gba games(and some n64 and gc games). How is vortex on snes? I've always wanted to see it, just never get around to it. Did fx fighter ever make it to beta, even in rom form for fx chip? A buddy of mine had the pc version of it and I remeber it being really good(this was back in vf1 days though, so who knows if it holds up). Had all sorts of graphical options, which was nice. Maze hunter 3d pretty good. I think the 3d effect is damn good. Wish it had password or level select. Chakan definitely different, but I still like it(when playing with game genie). Trying to play for real impossobly hard. I will have to try montezuma's revenge, I liked super pitfall. Jewel master a real gem, imo. It and that shadow blasters are seriously underrated and unknown. You know what else is like that? Damn, I cannot remember the name! It's done by dreamworks(game co), it's a beat'em up and you control a kabuki fighter guy. Two player fun in wildly imaginative backdrops. Once I remember the name I will recommend. Genesis ghostbusters, I have the same issue: it's so hard now! I remember it being tough back in the day, but not this hard. Still damn good. Wish winston wasn't cut...seems wrong. I would like to get read dead redemption, but am considering waiting for a "complete" edition with all dlc included(same for la noire). I bought both dlc for gtaiv, haven't had a chance to play either though. Speaking of dlc, dante's inferno "dark forest" is xbox deal of the week at 240 points. Going to use xbox live gold trial card to garb it up. If any of you haven't tried it yet, get yo ass in gear. It's awesome!!! I love seeing people's visions of hell for some reason. Gen showed me demo for heavy rain and though we both liked it, we both agreed we'd rather just watch it on auto-play(like road avenger). On super offroad: the baja - sounds interesting...and I do love me some 32x motocross. Have you tried that pc version yet? I really wish re-volt would have been included with the xbox live kits(it was the game they beta tested live with), I think it would have been fucking awesome. I still need to get re-volt on dc. Get this: gameworks, before it got shut down, had the arcade version of it! I think it just ran off dc hardware. Break out your original xbox and try mad dash racing. It's fucking awesome, because crystal dynamics programs it right. Love it, love it, love it. Toejam and earl really is one of the best co-op games of all time. I remember renting that game EVERY friday and playing it through with a buddy. We had it down to a damn system! I also remember finally getting it for x-mas and playing it through with my sister. So good. I really need to try the xbox version. Man, I love pit fighter on genesis. It's another console conversion that I feel is infinitely better than the arcade version. Played the fuck out of it with a buddy. Can make it to that last guy pretty regular, but have only been able to beat him with the power of the genie. Are you(drkstlkr) sure you've heard the ending for earthworm jim on sega cd? It's hilarious, with the guy trying to keep up on reading the credits, then he gets lost and starts just spouting stuff out? Is ewj hd a port of the sega cd version, with the new soundtrack and extra levels? That probably it for now guys; I really miss posting and chatting with y'all. I have been using this "opera mini" on the blackberry and it's working pretty well. Maybe I can get to more posts during lunch breaks and whatnot... "Are you(drkstlkr) sure you've heard the ending for earthworm jim on sega cd? It's hilarious, with the guy trying to keep up on reading the credits, then he gets lost and starts just spouting stuff out? Is ewj hd a port of the sega cd version, with the new soundtrack and extra levels?" ...*goes back to listen to the ending for realz this time.* ...Clearly, I was an idiot. I think I was only half listening while I listening to the soundtrack outside (the ending is on it for some reason) and just thought is was nonsense talking. You're right, Bel. I'm glad I gave it another shot. It was really funny. :D As for the XBLA port: I think it has the CD version's levels, but the soundtrack is different. I've been playing quite a few games recently, I just haven't posted them. Here we go! Mortal Kombat: I <3 it. Favorite fighter of the year so far. Dishwasher: Vampire Smile: Even better than the first game. I will probably get my Pure Action award again. Marvel vs. Capcom 3: I like it, but I think I've only played it once ever since the Mortal Kombat DEMO came out. Dragon Age II: It was good, but I liked the first game more. Power Rangers the Movie game for Genesis: It's pretty much exactly like I remembered back as a kid. Definitley can't stand against the other brawlers, but it was alright for what it was. Jurassic Park (Gen): This is exactly as I remembered it to be too. Hard and dark. Infamous 2: Refining the gameplay AND improving the story and characters? Shit, I think God of War III could've learnd something from this game. It's great. Lunar PSP Edition: If Chrono Trigger was introduced to through the Nintendo DS, then I guess it's only fair that the PSP respond in kind. I missed some really kick-ass RPG's, didn't I? And now games I didn't buy, but played: Dante's Inferno: It may be because I'm a pussy or it may be some reason I can't put my finger on, but I did not enjoy playing this game. I won't trash it because I don't think it's a bad game, but I wasn't into it. Splatterhouse: Yet for some reason, I am digging this game a lot. It's like-no, it IS an exploitation game. The Happy Video Game Nerd recommended this too. We must have similar taste or something. Silent Hill Shattered Memories: Couldn't finish it. I tried, but it didn't hold my attention. Duke Nukem Forever: Even though I would give this game a 5/10, I have to say that some critics were very cruel to it. Did anyone else read that ARS Technica one? *shutters* Anyway, the game was average. I enjoyed parts. I hated parts. The water levels were among the worst ever, but overall I'm glad I played through it at least once. Edited by DarcSeven, Jul 9 2011, 06:17 PM.

VF4 Evo is significantly better looking than the original Virtua Fighter 4. VF4 has all the same murky colors and nondescript details but adds typical PS2 aliasing to the mix. Evo covers up the aliasing with darker colors and lower contrast. On Joe Montana CD, I don't see anything over at Mobygames for Visual Concepts and Football games from the 90s. I'll have to check out the Astyanax arcade version later. I just noticed that nobody reviewed this on gamefaqs, so I read the Sega-16 review (I've noticed a number of reviews shared between the two sites). All I can say is wow, I really cannot believe I read the whole review as it was obviously going to trash the game no matter what from the first line. There are no gameplay related comments that justify the 2/10 score or the frequent over use of the term "bad". Too many offensive plays, the reviewer wasn't very good at avoiding interceptions, or tackling the player who made the interception. I had a similar problem with passing to well covered receivers resulting in interceptions, but tackling in this game is quite easy and the AI usually does it for me. I'm still not sure why this game is so fun to pick on.
According to Yuzo Koshiro's wikipedia page he did the music for Ys 1 and 2, which would be the Master System game and Ys Book 1 + 2 on the Turbo CD. It's an awesome haunting soundtrack even on the Master System's PSG (a shame it doesn't have an FM version with the YM 2413 upgrade). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yuzo_Koshiro
Or less than that in my case, I got stuck in level 2 and haven't picked it up since.
It's cool that the Atari Anthology works on the 360 that's for sure. I am more than content with it for all of the games I played as a kid. Plus I don't have to muscle around with those crappy controllers. Brutal is somewhat of an acquired taste, I like it for the same reason I like Eternal Champions. The gameplay doesn't focus on the special moves as much as it does on the basic ones. I also like that you earn special moves by winning.
I haven't played much of it, but it is great that somebody can still make a new game today. Edited by sheath, Jul 9 2011, 07:21 PM.

I bought a few more classic gaming goodies. Dungeon Explorer and Final Lap Twin (Complete, 18.72 + 10.00) and 10 great quality card sleeves for Turbo Chips and HuCards (0.99) for TG16/PCEngine, Madden and Shockwave (Disc Only, 8.38) for 3DO. I also bought some lonesome Master System 3D glasses hoping they work for $11.09, a SCART to Component adapter for $45.48, and a Genesis 2 RGB SCART cable for $16.84. I should have stories to tell about each before too long.[/url] |

Back and bored out of mind, out with the girlfriend and her friends...time to get some more poorly written, short and poor grammered(starting off strong, dammit) replies... The soundtrack is redbooked on ewj cd, and you could listen to the ending at any point, maybe they were just trying to do that again. I need to try the demo, see if the souindtrack is the same or not. It was done by tommy t, so I can't imagine him objecting to them using it again. Mortal kombat 9 - I have so many nice things to say about this one, but will wait when I can really bore y'all on a full keyboard. If you guys haven't seen who the final dlc character is...get ready for it, you won't believe it! I was pseudo-thrilled with mvsc3, but the lack of characters and stages, plus the overall quality of the cast was really weak. The two dlc characters didn't really do lot for me either. I think they dumbed it down way, way too far...but who knows, maybe umvc3 will change my opinion. For some reason I still want to try capcom vs tatsunoko on wii even though I can imagine it playing almost exactly like this. All of the jurassic park games on the genesis are hard, but all three are great. The two on sms/gg are fucking awesome, but much different. Both lunar games are fucking great, and I actually prefer the scd version over the psx remake(though those are good too). Dante's inferno, imo, is best when played on the easist setting. Seems more plausible as ge can kill most enemies in a combo or two rather than 15 combos, plus magic, plus cross attacks. I want to try splatterhouse, the gt video review actually changed my mind on it(they hate it, so I will probably like it). Speaking of crap-looking ps2 games(vf4/evo), now that we've found pk a fully working unit, does anyone know what that disc was called that allows you to upscale games to 1080? I want to order that thing right away! I will try to find that pc game joe montana cd is based on, it would make a great comparison. As for the reviews, it's just hard to get past the graphics for most. I just don't like how it plays, but then I am more of an arcade-style player than a sim'er. You will need a faq to get through both ootw and heart of the alien, no way around it. Try to go through it once thoug, some of thegraphics are really slick later on. Atari anthology runs at 1080i on the original xbox too, which is pretty funny. Pitfall was really the only game I want and I get that on pitfall:tma on sega cd. Pk likes that 2600 bs though, so I got that for her since working emus are so hard to find for that shit-system. I can't remember, does brutal have any sort of arcade mode where everyone is available and all moves are unlocked? How does dungeon explorer on tg16 fare against the scd version? If those 3d glasses work, they go for a bit on ebay... Bel I really like mvsc1, even though most will tell you that part 2 destroys it. I love 2.5d fighters...I love the fusion of 2d sprites and 3d backgrounds. Have loved it since cvssnk1(another one I really still like, even though part 2 is fucking awesome). I know a lot of people don't like the way the sprites clash with the backgrounds(especially when it reveals their blocky edges). Newer games do a good job of hiding it by upping the res of the sprites and/or softening their edges. The mk season pass makes the dlc stuff do-able, so look in to that. I like skarlet, I love kenshi but don't much care for rain. Freddy is so fucking awesome I can hardly believe it. Baraka is in the game, but he's much different than freddy, trust me. As for the ninjas and women, trust me, this isn't old mk...everyone is quite different from each other now. the only move they all share now is the uppercut. I hate to say it before any of ya'll give it a try, but Splatterhouse sucks. The gameplay is mediocre, just a series of strong and weak attack combos that you upgrade throughout the game. The level design is bad, nothing is memorable in any way, it might as well be a series of "VR" missions against zombies. The gore is way way over the top, to the point of being disgusting even for me though I recognize that might be a plus for some. Another potential plus that is the biggest deterrent to me is the freaking Mask character constantly repeating the same five phrases during every fight and generally being a dick. I turn it off as often as possible but then a cutscene will pop up and I'll have to read it in subtitles. The game has also locked up on me several times installed on my 120GB HD, and takes at least half a minute to load every freaking time you die. I haven't played the Sega CD version of Dungeon Explorer before, and since it goes for $100 I will just have to try it with a CDR sometime. Fortunately I hooked up my Sega CD 2 unit so I can use some CDRs, like Pier Solar's soundtrack CD, without risking my precious. Speaking of, I landed new 3-D glasses for the Master System for $10! They didn't come with the card slot input, but I already had that. The owner didn't know if they worked as a result, but they have the ear pieces whereas mine came with those snapped off by some fat head. Also on topic, I have played several games of Madden on 3DO and Joe Montana CD now and cannot find any significant differences in gameplay for either. The only review online is from Sega-16, which complains about everything from interceptions happening to players not having numbers on their backs. Madden 3DO has plenty of interceptions, more than the Genesis games if I recall the super duper hail mary play correctly, and the more detailed but less animated characters don't have numbers on their backs either. |

I snagged a Sony Trinitron 32" off craigslist for $80 today. I was pretty happy with that one. Now I get to build an all new entertainment cabinet that will house this massive beast next to my 40" Toshiba LCD. Then, there will be much light gun gaming with the four year old, oh yes. -edit- Crap, apparently the HD Trinitrons don't work with light gun games either and I just happened to nab one. I could have sworn all CRTs could be made to work with light guns. |

Rocket Knight Adventures and The Magical Quest Starring Mickey Mouse for $10 each and they're awesome. I'm surprised that you have to beat them both in one sitting and there's no password of Level Select, but they're still great. Err...You're gonna kill me for this but since I was limited to two, I passed over Quackshot. I'll get it if it's there next time but when I tried all three, Quackshot ranked 3rd. It was still good though so I hope I get the chance to get it next time. |

Quackshot is very good for what it is, I haven't played much of Rocket Knight or Magical Quest. Quackshot is an early Genesis game, so it is amazing for being such an advanced game as a second generation title. There is plenty to enjoy about it, but it might not immediately strike somebody who has the entire Genesis library in front of them. |

With TGCM, I always got stuck at this one level, and I think it was haunted house...or maybe down in some caverns, where there's just huge empty space, with nothing to latch on to...I've tried jumping, but I never land on anything. Have a similar problem with Maui Mallard in one of the later vertical jungle levels. Bel Argh, I'm sorry, I would have tried to warn you if I'd of known. Some larger sets that have flat screens don't do well with light gun games due to the whatever it is they do to the screen to make it flat(those two lines you'll see towards the top and bottom). That's why when I got found that 37" Panasonic 4:3 SDTV, I made sure the tube was rounded(the lightgun genre is one of my favorites). Your set may, however, work for the few Xbox light gun games that came out(HotD3 and Silent Scope). I've got both sets of guns too, the machine guns that Mad Catz put out for HotD3 and the light rifle Pelican put out for SS. Haven't been able to test either though... :( Bel |

Yeah, I ended up putting the Wega in the guest bedroom, it's still a good set and I wanted a 32" for in there. The issue with HD CRT sets is that they don't have scanlines either, and the light guns use the scanlines to map the top left and bottom right of the screen. Fortunately I landed a flat screen 27" RCA CRT set that works perfectly! I'm building my new gaming cabinet around it today, 6 foot tall 43.5 inches wide all wood with all fifteen of my game consoles and HTPC hooked up and one wire going out to the HDTV. I'll post pictures when I'm done, I feel like I'm making the ultimate Arcade cabinet. ;) |

I'm also looking forward to Power Drift for Saturn and Flashback cart only for Jaguar. -edit- Oh yeah, and CoD:BLOPS and Shadow of the Colossus. But I don't think these two are staying, there's way too much down time in the "gameplay". Edited by sheath, Aug 22 2011, 10:03 AM.

Couple of things I got. First, the PS3 version of Mortal Kombat did get the $15 deal for all four DLC Kombatants, so I'm downloading them as I speak. I'm looking forward to using them. Second: Deus Ex: Human Revolution. OH. HELL. YES! This one was absolutely worth the wait. I'm about to start the final mission soon, but I've loved this game all the way through so far. This will probably be my GOTY, but Uncharted 3, Skyrim and quite a few others that are definitely strong cases coming up very soon. |

got all nostalgic for revenge of shinobi batman edition lately (I traded mine to bel a long time ago), so I bought a couple of copies of the game from gametz (for 2 or 3 bucks apiece). The first one is the one with batman removed, but no marvel license yet. Then I got the second one, popped it in, game genied to spiderman and mijin'd him to find the dark knight. So it was a pretty short quest. I've got shinobi batman edition again :-) |

That's a pretty quick grab! All of the Revenge of Shinobi's I tested while I was working at the game store were the RE02. Speaking of, I've got Shinobi X, the UK version of Shinobi Legions with the awesome soundtrack, coming along with Flashback for Sega CD. Flashback gives me the ability to work on a comparison video of the Genesis, Sega CD, SNES, Jaguar, and 3DO versions of Flashback. I don't think I'll be worried about the PC version this time. |
