Alright ya'll, Now the that forums are, somewhat, pretty active I've been wondering what to do about the ad situation. The current rate that InvisionFree charges is: $0.15 per 1,000 page views. The minimum buy is $5. You'd think that last us, but the last time I paid it was Aug. 22nd. That only got us through about two months without ads. Right now, all I'm seeing are those generic text-based ads(by Google), and there's usually just one per page, either at the top or bottom. Not especially distracting, but annoying none the less. Thing is, they aren't Flash-based, they're not huge, and they don't put them in between our messages(like some forums do) so I'm not sure what to do. I mean, $5 per three months isn't bad...but I'm wondering if it's even worth the time to pay it...and if I constantly do, at what point have I paid too much, or more than the free service is worth? What do ya'll think? Bel |

The ads are pretty low key. Nothing thats so spastic like a flash animation thats going to give one a seizure or something. If you have to put up with that to get it for free, I say go with it. |

I appreciate the input. Yeah, until they start forcing flash-based, or picture-based ads on us, I think I may just let it slide. To me, it's not that bad, since they are just text-based and only have 1 per page. Bel |

So they are Google ads, hmm, so it picks text based ads based on whats in the thread I wonder? Random? I know it seems that it aims text based stuff when you do a search but its kind of off to the side so its not very annoying. Heck, if your actually looking to buy something its kind of helpful or worth a look at least. |

Yeah, it uses keywords in the posts to determine which text is in the ad. It's actually pretty slick, and would have been nice if Google just didn't let every yahoo in the world join in on it. I mean, half the time, I see ads for illegal copies of games and that sort of shit. You'd think Google wouldn't allow it...but that'd also assume they actually look into who joins the program... Google is just getting so huge, but I kind of dig that they keep things vanilla looking and not *too* overbearing. That has to be on purpose. I have even started using that personalized Google page as my hompage, its pretty neat. As far as pirating, yeah that is pretty wack. I can't remember seeing something even remotely that sketchy on say an Amazon but they must keep that a lot tighter I guess. |

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Amazon keeps a close eye out on their shit. Thing thing with Google Ads is, *anyone* can join. At one point, maybe a year ago, I signed up with Google Ads and started putting one per page at the bottom of the HoR pages. When you sign up, they give you the option of receiving money for every click through, or going into their link exchange. If you go into their link exchange, for everytime someone clicks through on one of the ads on your page, it'll put your page in one of the ads on someone else's page. This is how, I think, a lot of people slip in shit like "Xbox 360 Backups for sale" in these Google Ads. Bel |

Well, there's a few problems with that as of right now: 1. If the site goes down, so do the forums. In the past, when I've had issues with WAG's hosting, I've always used the forums to alert people to this. Not that a whole lot of people would care, but at least if it's something. 2. If I start a new forum with my hosting company, we loose *everything* this forum has so far, posts, members, everything. Everyone will have to sign up again at the new forum, and I've already asked some members to do this *twice* now(back in the early days when I was trying out forum hosts).
The pics do work, you just have to copy and paste/drag and drop them into the url bar to get around the hotlinking. I need to mess around with the hotlink protection code, I'm sure I can get it work, to allow this forum to be one of the places it allows through...I just haven't had the energy to attempt it just yet. So, I'll probably just be sticking with InvisionFree, but I can pay the $5 every now and then to ditch the ads....and I think we'll be alright. :) Bel |
