'ello all, Just out of curiosity, I was wondering what kind of download speed everyone was seeing out of WAG. What'd I'd like to, for those how want to participate, is point everyone to the same file. You can right-click and just do "save target as", or you can go to the actual page to get it, however you'd like to handle it. Once the download has started just sort of note what you're seeing in terms of speed and post the results here. :) Past that about the only info I'd really like to see is you connection's speed(768k DSL, 5 meg Cable, T1, etc). If you'd like to add "This was at home/work/friend's house/etc" that's fine. Oh, also, try to have anything else sucking bandwidth at the time of the test. :) Ok here's the file I'd like to use: http://www.whipassgaming.com/Sounds/My%20G...d2(Genesis).mp3 It's the RockMan 2 music from the MD Game "RockMan MegaWorld", also known as "Mega Man: The Wily Wars". I picked this file not only because it's 22 megs, but also because it's just a great rendition of the classic MM2 tunes we all came to love back on the NES. If you have problems with the link, or you'd just like to hit the page to get it, here it is: http://www.whipassgaming.com/mygamemusic/Tape8.htm (on the next to last row, has a picture of MM in WoodMan's stage with some robot bats and a bunny attacking him) I'll go ahead and get us started...I'm going to start downloading now, will post my results here in just a sec. At work - T1 line: Downloads anywhere from 70k to around 120k, usually hovers right at 95k down. Takes around 4 minutes for the 22 meg file. At home - 1.5 meg DSL: A static 38.3k down, takes around 9:30 for the 22 meg file. Bel |

I thought "Junk Man" in part 5(or maybe it was 6, or maybe 4, who knows, after 3 I just didn't care anymore until 8 hit on the Saturn) was particularly generic.

I'm getting 33.5 Kbps right now, that's about 11 minutes. Also, since I've gotten most of my files up again. This is a 32.4 MB file that I'd like to see what everybody's download speeds is: http://www.gamepilgrimage.com/SATvPS12007/...laveComp001.avi |

At home - 1.5 meg DSL: Downloads anywhere from 100k to around 134k, usually hovers right at 113k down. Takes around 4 and half minutes for the 32.4 meg file. I'll edit this post with info from my work's T1 line on Monday. :) |

That's the kind of speeds I need to keep people willing to download such large files. I wonder if it's only in Texas, I get 300Kbps down on my site from here. I'd bet they're in Houston. How fast is T1 anyway? I thought it was only like 3Mbps or some such. |

Naw, a T1 is around 20 megs down...at least ours is. Our third shift guy did a speed test the other night, said it was 26 megs down a second. Once we get some other people to give us some input, you'll have a better picture. Like I said, though, download speed isn't that big of an issue anymore, I don't think. I mean, you saw how my download speed was going from WAG, and I constantly get emails about how much people love the Sound{e}scapes section...and some of those MP3s are huge. ;) Plus, you can always start up a Divx Stage 6 channel with your stuff, even if to just add a second optional download link to your viewers. That shit is fast...Divx gives it to me at around 1.5 megs down to around 3 megs. Bel |

I tend to listen to your soundescapes straight off the web page when I'm at work. That's not too bad because quicktime streams it fairly quickly. Every time I've gone to download a file though, I've just had to walk away and come back for it later. It will be interesting to see how fast other people are getting these files off our servers. I have a feeling that it is entirely dependent on how far they are from the servers. |

Yeah, a lot of people email me and tell me they just stream it right off the page via a plug-in in the browser. At some point I'll try to time how long a piece takes via streaming and see how that compares to just downloading. I know "streaming" is all the rage with these fucking hosting companies lately. I don't know why, really... Bel |

Just tried streaming it, it took around the exact same time to come down. I guess it seems shorter because you can listen to the music as it comes down, then when it's done you just save it. Bel |

Yeah, it's just because I can listen to it right away. I can't save it after it finishes though, it just redownloads and I don't know why. |

Hmmmm. Are you using the Quicktime plugin to play them in the browser? If so, you have to have QT Pro to save it(it's bullshit, I know, just go out and get a serial for it, Apple's stance on QT is ridiculous). If you use WMP, I'm not sure how you'd save it...but I think it can be done. Past that, I'm not sure how else to save it after playing it. I'd assume that most people just do the "save target as" thing after listening to, and deciding they want a copy of the pieces. Bel |

Apple's stance on everything is ridiculous. Especially quicktime though - full-screen playback should not be a feature for which you must pay extra, especially when every other free media player in existence includes it. |

Word. It's the reason why I tell everyone that I hate Apple, but love the Mac.
It is truly ridiculous. The guys at Divx even made a movie specifically making fun of QT6, and the fact that it couldn't do full screen without going "Pro". With that said, *any* member who wants to serial and user ID to unlock QT7 to QT7 Pro, just PM me. :) Bel |

At work - T1 connection: Downloads anywhere 170k to 270k, usually hovers right around 240k to 260k. Takes around 2 minutes for the 32.4 meg file. Sorry about the late response, I forgot about doing this. :) Bel |

Was checking this out the other day with my videos and on the T1 line here at work it's been going up to 500k down lately. I don't know if they've increased the bandwidth or what... Bel |
