You know, evertime I renew the WAG.com name they always ask me if I want to buy "WAG.net, .org, etc" and I always tell them, "No, noone cares enough to try to pull something like that". Check out the above link, someone actually registered "whipasgaming.com". I wish I could have clicked on the link before they gave up the domain name last month(I just found this tonight).

Got an interesting piece of mail today...sort of goes along the lines of the whole "Whip As Gaming" attempt someone else had made. You'll love this...

"(If you are not the person who is in charge of this, please forward to the right person/ department, as this is urgent, thank you.)
Dear CEO,

We are the department of registration service in China. we have something which needs to confirm with you. We formally received an application on Sept. 15th, 2010. One company called "Per-Tec Limited" is applying to register " whipassgaming " as Brand name and domain names as below:

whipassgaming.cn
whipassgaming.com.cn
whipassgaming.com.hk
whipassgaming.com.tw
whipassgaming.hk
whipassgaming.in
whipassgaming.tw

After our initial checking, we found the Brand name and domain names being applied are as same as your company! So we need confirmation with your company. If the aforementioned company is your business partner or your subsidiary, please DO NOT reply us, we will approve the application automatically. If you don't have any relationship with this company, please contact us within 5 workdays. If over the deadline, we will approve the application submitted by "Per-Tec Limited " unconditionally.

Best Regards

Rensis Ho"

Now, I can totally see this being some sort of phishing scam...at the same time, though, as this *is* China I can also see this being real. What concerns me about the possibility of it being real is, again as this is China, we *all know* what they'll use the Whip Ass Gaming name for: Pirated software. They'll try to use what few hits I get and my ranking in Google to lure people to their site to either sell them copies or rip them off when they try to buy copies. Either way, that's bad news for the WAG name. Last thing I need is are people with lawyers sniffing around WAG(I can see the Sound{e}scapes section taking a hard, hard hit), especially if they're doing so because they believe I am associated with what's going on in China.

Now, here's the site that that guy, supposedly, represents:

http://www.drc-china.com/

Looks legitimate, doesn't it? Bringing up "Per-Tec Limited"(the people, again supposedly, applying for the domains) doesn't seem to exist exactly as that. Searching them on Google brings up a *lot* of companies named that. To me it sounds like a great way to hide.

So, what do we think? Do I send a reply in just to see what they hit me with or just ignore it?

EDIT: Apparently this is a well known scam:

http://www.google.com/search?q=We+are+the+department+of+registration+service+in+China.+we+have+something+which+needs+to+confirm+with+you.&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a

They're doing exactly what I thought: Playing off fear of what said people will do with your domain name in China, trying to get *you* to purchase all the domains they've listed. Apparently they've been pulling this since 2008...I guess they just finally got to the domains that start with W...;)

I have been, and remain, non-sequitur
I'd report that e-mail to the FBI immediately. There is no telling what they are up to, but a Chinese company wouldn't give a damn about you owning the domain in the States.

Just because I now know that the postal money order scammers that got me with that car sale five years ago are being extradited from Canada, I report everything that comes my way. It's fun, it's easy, and it makes criminals have to stay on the run.
