I have just posted a Need for Speed Comparison video that contains the 3DO, Saturn and PS1 version. I have to say that I was completely shocked upon playing the 3DO version and finding the exact same detail levels with only a little slowdown.

There's also a full gameplay video of the first race.

I don't know about "exact same detail", I mean the street in the 3DO seems to lack a lot of detail, as does the environments. Still, it seems to run alright...a lot slower than the Saturn version, but commendable for the 3DO. Maybe you have to see it on the actual console to get it?

What I mean is that the draw distance is the same, and the same number of trackside detail is present. The textures are definitely different, and it's noticeably slower on 3DO. I'm not sure whether the slowness is Road and Track's insistence on a more "sim" racer, or whether it's actually just slowing down. The fact that the framerate goes from 30FPS to 20FPS just like the Saturn and PS1 games seems to indicate that the speed is intentional. This is definitely a game that would require a developer to comment on how it was done. Just by looking at it, I can't tell whether they "cheated" to get the 3D to be the same quality per frame as a PS1/Saturn game. The overall impression though, with the Saturn and PS1 game being so much faster (speed wise, not framerate wise), would definitely cause the average game player to think that the 3DO game was inferior.

Ah, I see. Yeah, I'd agree about that.

Makes you wonder if it was a port job too, to both consoles, as they all exhibit the same issue.

Yeah, the speed and lack of texturing and whatnot really doesn't shine the best light on the 3DO version...but you could be right, it could very well be just as good as the other two. It's something I'd have to see on the console, I guess. :)

Somebody in RGVS, who originally got me to check out NFS, said that the Saturn and PS1 games had been totally retooled from the 3DO original. I expected completely barren track sides, noticeable pop-up and no cars or sprite based cars (like most other "3D"O games. Seeing the same tracks with no changes, and even some effects that the Saturn game doesn't do was quite a shock.
