Seven Signs the Hardcore Gamer Doesn't Matter Anymore

http://www.gamedaily.com/articles/galleries/seven-signs-the-hardcore-gamer-doesnt-matter-anymore/

Have never really been to this site, but then my counter caught it referring people to WAG(they were doing a small piece on the best Sega logos). Thought the above article was kind of interesting...

Right off the bat they got their terms mixed up. Hardcore gamers were replaced by core gamers. Core which are the ones who think FFVII is a pinnacle of gaming rather than a SNES RPG with FMV cutscenes/backgrounds. Hardcore gamers played Mario, Sonic, etc. Core gamers won't matter before too long, but as of right now they're generating more software sales than the new "casual" group likely ever will.

Good to see gamedaily is keeping up with current trends... :-P

honestly, the hardcore gamer hasn't mattered since 1995, and their lack of importance was cemented firmly in place in 1999, when people said "no thanks" to the Saturn and Dreamcast, respectively.

Scott's right though, there's a difference between a core gamer and a hardcore gamer. I wouldn't say it's necessarily that hardcore gamers played mario and sonic, nor is it necessarily that hardcore gamers are better at games than core gamers...

I think the difference is that hardcore gamers appreciate an expertly designed game, no matter its age, or length, or graphical quality, and core gamers always seem to want the current or next big thing.

Core gamers want thousands of unlockables to extend the replayability of a great game - hardcore gamers see a high score table alone as plenty of replay value.

Core gamers are yesterday's casual gamers. The ones who started gaming with Madden and then added Halo or God of War to their repertoire. Likewise, in a few years today's casual gamers will be tomorrow's core gamers. The core gamers of today will be the hardcore, and the hardcore gamers of today will probably no longer be playing games (or if they do, it'll be on their old hardware).

I should write an article about this. :-P

I think the terms need to be agreed upon, and I think no terms need to be defined for the purpose of insulting people. I'm fairly comfortable with the usage listed last year by Ben and I. Hardcore gamers like good games and tend towards older games, Core gamers like fads and can be just as devoted to "the next best thing" as Hardcore gamers are to what they prefer, and Casual Gamers by a few games and either give up or become Core gamers.
