I still buy DVDs and HD DVDs, but I gave up on CDs around 5 or 10 years ago.
*Everything* will go digital, and soon. This is why even though Blu-Ray won out, they're still going to loose. HD DVD's fate, as I've mentioned in some other threads, would have been the same(unfortunately). Still, anything that fucks Sony is A-OK in my book.
Discussed here, post #74. Bel |

well I think eventually we could be looking at all digital media. But Saying Blu-ray will lose to Digital is saying VHS will lose to DVD. Of course no format lives forever. |

True, but this won't be 10 or 15 years down the line, it's looking more like 3 to 4. HD DVD and Blu-Ray just didn't have what it takes...not in this digital, high-speed era. I really thought it'd be *much* longer before people were willing to give up hard copies of stuff, but with Steam, XBLM, PSN, etc, the digital download is just rocking. No one seems to care about the box, manual and disc anymore... Bel |

Well I really don't see Studios giving up on Physical Media that fast when if you look at it that really is a money maker. Billions of dollars. Also we are talking about broadband for all. People still like owning things. Sure Digital will be around but not replace. I mean they still sell CDs. All the Digital downloads are not growing as fast as Blu-ray sales. Also The selection of Digital Downloads are solely up to the Studios and when they want they can push the button but until then they are happy with Blu-rays/DVDs sales. |

http://dvd.ign.com/articles/963/963916p1.html This one is going to piss off Sony and the BDA, as it goes directly after their key demographic for PS3 Blu-Ray sales. I found the "Blu-ray is A Stop-Gap" part to be especially damning...mostly because it's true. With stuff like the Netflix box, not to mention Netflix playback on the 360 and some Blu-Ray machines, then the new FIOS cable boxes coming from Verizon both HD DVD and Blu-Ray together couldn't survive this coming "war". Honestly, I think both of the HD formats just came out too late, as painful as that may be to hear/say. This doesn't even take in to account the huge amount of piracy going on with Blu-Ray, and the eventual takeover of the .MKV format. I promise you that anyone with an HTPC will *never* own a Blu-Ray player or drive just due to the fact that you can download and playback Blu-Ray rips with such ease. Terrabyte drives are around $100 now, and trust me when I tell you that you can fit quite a few Blu-Ray rips on one of those suckers. ;) Bel |

Sorry to disappoint you, but someone has to have the BR drive in the PC to do the rips, so there will always be a market, hehe. Speaking as someone who has a HTPC, I am considering eventually getting a BR drive for it. I'm not one to purchase movies in general, but sometimes it is more convenient to rent one or borrow one than it is to download it. I don't know that you can say with certainty that every movie released on BR has been ripped and is easily accessible through piracy. That is certainly true for DVD, which is why I still rent once in a while or borrow when I can't find a movie online, or if its poorly seeded and would take a few weeks to download. There have also been cases where I couldn't find a movie to rent and downloaded a rip instead. |

With how large the DVD catalog is, it's easy to see how you could run in to more than a few that simply aren't available via bittorent....but Blu-Ray, on the other hand, *every* single movie on that format has been ripped(as has HD DVD). Even the bullshit "Blu-Ray Java" protection hasn't stopped them...not even remotely. ;) Of course, that just covers the piracy issue...again, we've got Verizon about to launch that new 100 megs package and that will open up so many possibilities for VOD. The Netflix box will do well too, even if most of their stuff is SD right now. It's all just creeping up on the HD disc format...and it ain't pretty. Blu-Ray may survive...as a PC format, for data storage and backup, but I just don't see it making it as a movie format. Bel |
