Star Trek and Wolverine....

My buddy Gen took me to go see Star Trek tonight(how we managed to get in, I don't know, but it was *empty* as fuck, probably less than 20 people in the theater with us)...after which we snuck in to see X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Honestly, I liked Star Trek. The Trekkies will never accept it though...and will probably even have a hard time just imagining it as an "alternate reality" storyline(which it kind of is). Still, it was fun to see everyone at a younger age and hear them spout off most of their trademarked catchphrases. Not a bad story either, it has pretty much everything you love to see in a ST film/episode: Time Travel, massive battles, near-miss teleporting, etc. I thought everyone did a good job with their roles...especially Karl Urban who did "Bones" McCoy.

Wolverine, on the other hand, wasn't so good. It didn't seem like a Wolverine movie so much as a "let's pack as many mutant cameos as possible into an hour and a half" movie. Other than Sabertooth, no one really got more than 10 minutes...including Gambit. The special effects were pretty weak...his claws are obviously CGI, and just sort of hover around his hands. Parts where there are explosions, or he's riding the bike are horribly blue-screened. They change quite a bit of the story, so if you're a hardcore Wolverine fan, expect to be totally disgusted(as I was with the Ghost Rider movie). After the credits you are treated to one of three possible endings...just depends on which your theater got. We got the weakest of the three, sadly.

Damn you Rothman!!!

I'm trying to go see Star Trek, but lately so much crap has been coming up I'm getting a little annoyed.

I can't speak for all trekkies, but my favorite storylines in any of the shows were the alternative reality/mirror universe ones. Especially the mirror universe episodes that made up 2 out of the last 3 episodes of Enterprise. Was kind of disappointed the Next Generation never really did one, but the ones on DS9 were great.

I really loved the Enterprise episodes, and I enjoyed a Next Generation book at one point that was about the same thing. Is the new Star Trek really an alternate reality or just another in a long list of "re-imagined" storylines, because our kids can't handle the originals?

It's an alternate reality, they even talk about the original reality in the movie...

Well Star Trek was awesome. I'm sorry I called it Kirk's Creek now. It was surprisingly hilarious too. I'm glad I picked it over Wolverine. I want to check out some of the original series now. :D

Okay, by alternate reality I didn't realize we meant alternate timeline because of time travelers. I'm a little miffed that they didn't just go back in time and fix what went wrong, but other than that it was a very good little flick. I want to go see it again actually.

If you do, be sure you watch the "remastered" versions, with the new CGI and redone backdrops. SO MUCH BETTER.

Yeah I saw both of those. I am not a trekky or trekker but I have seen all of the original series and all the movies. I really liked it. For me as long as Captain Kirk didn't not blow it I was happy. I knew Spock would be great and he didn't disappoint. I saw it at on Thursday and people really seemed to laugh and get all the inside jokes and call back lines. From what I read there are 2 camps of fans that either loved it or was too caught up in inaccuracies. I hear the first group is much larger.

Well this I thought was a pretty good Star Trek movie and it is even an odd numbered one so the next one should be even better.

I will say one thing about both of these movies. If hollywood doesn't managed to pick up on some real fight choreography sometime soon I will lose all interest in movies. Action is what I go to see, and I'm sick of seeing people doing freaking cartwheels with a sword. I know they can do it, Rapid Fire had good fight scenes, and I don't give a crap that nobody knows how to fight. I swear, the next time they send three "advanced hand to hand combat" troopers into a nose dive, I'd better see something advanced.

I agree with that. I also wish that they would stop using Bourne Camera for fights too. It sucks.

I've never really understood that whole thing...I mean, I sat there and watched First Contact, Insurrection and the Nemesis all in one night and loved all of them. I don't see where all the hate comes from on Nemesis. Now, Generations...I didn't like.

This is typical Hollywood fluff though...no one just sort of gets up...they flip up, or they don't just hop down, they do a full Ninja Gaiden(arcade)-like flip. I wouldn't expect this to change anytime soon.

I've heard of this "Rapid Fire", but can't remember what it is...it's pretty good?

If this is in reference to that one scene on the drilling machine in Star Trek, I think the reason it was so "un-advanced" was simply because they were so young, they were trying to show that Kirk didn't always just walk up to someone and immediately whoop their ass in three hits.

That method is done specifically to make actors who don't know how to fight, look like they do. I thought it was pretty well done in Bourne, I liked all the power hits....reminded me of the old school Van Damme movies(btw, anyone see that he and Vinnie Jones are supposed to be in some movie together coming up soon?).

Yeah, you pretty much have to go foreign for that stuff these days. Just about any movie with Tony Jaa will have some badass action without wirework. I really liked Ong Bak, and the Protector, can't wait for Ong Bak 2.

Rapid Fire was a classic Brandon Lee film.

I think a lot of the hate on Nemesis came from a certain character getting killed in kind of a pointless way, trying to rip off what happened at the end of Star Trek 2 with Spock. Most of the reasoning for the odd numbered films sucking came from the original cast movies and Generations. The newly released edition of Star Trek 1 made a lot of improvements and the movie made more sense after some re-editing. I don't know why anyone hates Star Trek 3, but Star Trek 5 and Generations (7) really sucked ass.

I still haven't seen the new one yet, but I haven't heard anyone say it was better than Star Trek 2, I'm thinking that might be a feat no one can pull off.

I don't know that it was pointless...but I thought they way they ended it was pretty reassuring that we'd possibly be seeing said character again down the line.

As for the earlier ST movies, believe it or not, I've never seen a single one. I think I may have seen bits and pieces of ST2, but not all the way through. Now that I've made it through Season 1(remastered) of the original series(my first exposure to the original series) I am going to start on the movies. I have tried to watch Season 2(remastered) but every episode is just horrible...it's like they took everything that was good about Season 1 and just fucking threw it out. I'm having a hard time trying to make myself watch the rest of them(there's around 24 in the season)...

I really dig The Next Generation(it was the first Star Trek series I had ever seen), never got in to DS9 or Voyager...and started watching Enterprise, but somehow starting missing it more and more until, all of the sudden, it was just canceled. Wouldn't mind having all seven season of ST:TNG...and at used prices, that's actually a realistic goal. ;)

Rapid Fire, as mentioned above, is a Brandon Lee movie that would have been a complete B movie if it weren't for the completely awesome and plausible fight scenes. There is a particular one on one fight scene with an old martial arts stand by and Lee towards the end that brings tears to my eyes every time I see it. *Nothing* even comes close to the awesome choreography of this fight.

As for the string foo of foreign films, that is actually what I'm saying I don't want to see any more of. It was cute once or twice, but I'd rather leave a fight scene believing a human being could actually get that good. It serves as inspiration to keep working out even with tendinitis, a stiff shoulder, etc. Of course, if real fighters really did come at you in a cartwheel I wouldn't have to work out, I could just front kick them in the head mid flip and be done with it.

I'll have to grab that "Rapid Fire", sounds pretty good. I'm trying to think of some of the best choreography I've ever seen and coming up blank...even though I know I have a list somewhere in my head. Will see what I can do...

Finally saw the new Trek, it was pretty damn good. It's in my top 3 of trek films. 2 and 3 are still my favorites. With this alternate timeline stuff, I guess they could re-invent the franchise every 5 movies or so and use a different cast. Not that I really want to see 10 more Star Trek films, unless they're pretty spread out. I guess the for the next cast, they'd have to use the tagline, this is not your grandfather's star trek.
