In short order the Nintendo 64 US game library should be uploaded to Gamepilgrimage. I started sifting through Gamefaqs reviews several months ago to finalize the N64 gamelist. The process helped me create the "genre" criteria I was lacking before. Instead of a single term I have decided to go with three terms or phrases to describe the game. After reading many poorly written and erratic reviews I started to pick up on the common phrases and reasons why the "author" submitted their review. The notable gamelist for the N64 is the result. To view the entire N64 library just click the Library link, type Nintendo 64 in the system field and hit Enter. The notable gamelist for the N64 will be listed under Notable Games starting in 1996. I would greatly appreciate any and all feedback on this list in particular, because I intend to go back to all previous systems and update their lists with similar genre phrases. |

It's listed under Genre, "RPG, Skill Upgrades" was all I gathered for that one. That should have read Role Playing, Skill Upgrades, I'll have to fix that. |

Ah, I see. Yeah, I can dig it...it gives you more info on the game, which is a good thing. I say keep going with it. Bel |

what makes it notable? Just the fact that it was an RPG on a system that had a dearth of them? |

That's something I'm going to have to explain. The game was noted for being an RPG that gave the player the freedom to power up certain skills. The reason it is on the list has nothing to do with how rare that is. It is just the fact that it was noted for these reasons more than once. The way the lists work is just that, whether or not the games were noted, or recommended, for specific gameplay related reasons. Other games may well have the exact same characteristics, but if nobody bothered to note them they aren't going to be included on the lists. You and bel may come to me with five more games that have the same characteristics, and I'd add them to the list. It is just a method for measuring subjectivity, the lists are not anything like a "best of" game list. The way this works out is actually very simple. Games that came out first, and games that people feel made an improvement on a similar design get noted for the same technical reasons. Games with the same characteristics as the above that had some intangible flaw simply don't get noted, even though you could describe them in exactly the same way. Every wrestling game on the N64 features multi-player, but not every N64 wrestler was recommended for its multi-player. The only games I'm worried about slipping through the cracks here are ones nobody gave a chance, but that's really the whole point of Gamepilgrimage anyway. Am I making any sense here? People usually were trying to say the game was "best" or "fun", but it is really only the fact that more than one person bothered to describe why they were recommending the game in the same way that got the game on the list. |

I'm going to adopt a new policy. Silence = approval. ;) |

I apologize...I've been so busy lately that I haven't been able to focus on any one thing lately. I try to stop by here, put in a quick post...and stuff that requires more than just a few minutes usually gets skipped until I can get a quiet moment. :) Anyway, I like the newly formatted list a bit more, it's definitely cleaner and more streamline. One thing I would suggest though(and again, just suggestions): It looks like the list data is only eating about 800X600 of most people's 1024X768 display, and not even the entire area you have set around your border. With that said, you're extended info about the games' genres could be slipped in. It's such a nice feature, it'd be great to see it in the list info(imo). Past that, and a few odd spacing glitches(I'm sure you're aware of them) it's looking real good. This is all done via that Drupal? I keep meaning to ask you: Is it database driven? Bel |

Yessir, Drupal is a fully fledged content management system that uses MySQL and PHP. I'm uploading these lists as a spreadsheet saved as a CSV file, Drupal is creating an individual page for each game automatically. The main content area inside the TV set graphic is split into three areas, the left column where you see the menu, the content area in the center, and a right column which has the administration menu for authenticated users. I will eventually add some random junk over on the right as well. Things like updated articles and random media or something, stupid stuff people like to see change every time they go to a website. The content area in the middle is 815 pixels wide. That's big enough to show any screenshot, and lightbox will expand any high resolution stuff to full screen for me. What do you mean by the extended info about the game's genres? The genre field is present when I've filled it in, and absent when it is empty. Is that what you're referring to? No worries about the reply times, I'm really just noticing that when people are silent it can be taken as approval and I can keep working. ;) |
