I've been toying with this... Sorry about talking about my PC too much... been years since I had a decent computer, and shit I'm bored. Yeah, I could use my current machine as an emu box... but with a Athlon 64 X2 5000+, 4GB of ram, and a Geforce 9500GT with component out be good for PS1, N64, Saturn and maybe DC emulation? I have some spare parts lying around and thinking of buying a few more... plus I need a decent backup machine. I can prolly just stick it under the desk and have it hooked up to the monitor and use it at the same time too ;) |

Emulation is pretty much bottomed out at your spec. Any dual core processor with 2GB of RAM maxes out all emulators in my experience. The problem with the 3D system's emulators is that they just aren't very good, aren't user friendly, don't actually emulate (they port in mass), and they are poorly optimized. PS1 and N64 stuff runs alright for some games, and not at all for most. Saturn is even worse than that, and I haven't even tried a DC emulator. With that said, your system will rock at 8-16-bit emulation and MAME. |

I know like epsxe when it was at its prime had low specs... wondered if those same specs today would be good. |

I run ePSXe 1.7 on an athlon 64 5600+. I use a 7900 GS PCI-E card with 256 mb of ram on it. I can play most of the games with some of the graphics settings turned up. Games run about the same whether I play them from the disk or from iso's on the hard drive. Some games require certain options be checked in the emulator, the forums at ngemu.com are a good place to start. I haven't tried any n64 emulators, or saturn emulators. |

Oh, OK. I am thinking of building another computer... I had a crappy HD4670 and a 5000+ lying around. I will upgrade both in the future. Found a nice ASUS AM2+ motherboard, woohoo! |

If any of the emulators are going to run for the games you want to play they will run as well as they are going to on the dual core system you mentioned. I'd also hesitate to go beyond XP Professional for emulation, but that might just be me. |

The Asus MB I am looking at supports Phenom II's and has Crossfire X, just the second PCI-E slot is capped at 4X.. but I don't plan on crossfire anytime soon, and it's nice for that headroom. This emu box is prolly going to be a second/spare system at the most, but sort of geared for emulators in a way. |

Built the PC. AMD Athlon 64X2 5000+ 4GB OCZ DDR 2 PC6400 ATI Radeon HD 4670 1GB ASUS M4A78 Plus 750GB Samsung HDD 500w Thermaltake PSU 22x LG DVD-RW Antec 300 Pretty nice system. Getting an Accerlo (sp?) GPU cooler for my 4670 and have a 3.5 bay adaptor on the way and getting a media reader "locally". And I should be good for a while, if forever :D Edited by David J., Nov 5 2009, 08:33 PM.

Yessir, I believe that will do the trick, at least until we're all forced to get Windows 7 for MS Flight Sim XII. |

I like Windows 7... very, very well. I am looking at upgrading the CPU when/if a Phenom II X2 500-series goes down in price, and maybe the next budget HD5000 series if they are as good as my HD4670, if not better. |

If you end up using 7 could you comment to the group how well various emulators run? |

They all run pretty damn good on my main machine... but that one is quite a bit faster. |

That's using Windows 7? That's great news. You've used MAME, Zsnes, Gens, Kgen, ePSXe, and Project 64? |

I've used MAME, Kega... haven't really tried any PS1 or N64 emus or SNES emus. But I bet they'd work pretty damn good. |

That's really good news. I was almost certain that emulators wouldn't work until they got a Windows 7 update. My office PC is almost to the spec of your new machine, except that it only has 2GB of RAM and a Geforce 8500GT. I might have to test out 7 if I can get it for cheap with the wife's student discount. |

This new machine had the power supply go belly up, so RMA time. And just when I got the wiring all clean :( |
