I have sitting in front of me a broken 360 Elite console with a good condition case. I have already taken the end caps off of it so my black 120GB hard drive trim will match the side plastics, and I have a chrome face plate. All in all having a white top doesn't bother me all that much anymore with the chrome faceplate. I would much prefer to have an all black console with the chrome faceplate though and I know it is easy to swap the cases.

Pros:
I get an "elite" without the HDMI port since my hardware didn't have one to begin with.

Cons:
Apparently MS will refuse to repair my out of warranty 360, even if I want to pay them.
I will have to dremel out the AV port plastic because the port moved between hardware revisions.

What to do? For now I'm going to sit on it, but I don't need much of a reason to go all the way with this to get the black console I've always wanted.

...well, and this is something Ben and possibly you had showed me: You can simply de-shell stuff like that and give it a once over with some sort of lacquer based spray paint, right? May give you the same results...though I don't know how MS would feel about it(warranty-wise).

If I could remove the shell without breaking the MS sticker behind the faceplate I'd go ahead with the project.

Ah, I see. Well, you can always try to put together some sort of package for your existing system...throw some games in, etc. and see about getting a decent price for it(people get crazy when something goes from just a console for sale, to a "package" for sale). From there you can sell off some other stuff to make up the extra and then just get an actual Elite, complete with a new warranty and another 120GB HDD. Thing is, since you don't seem to save anything on your HDD other than installed games and XBLA titles, you really could sell off your unit, with the HDD, and download everything again once you got the new one. It may take a little time, but come on...I think we could *all* do without our 360s for a few weeks/months. ;)
