A quick forward: Every Thursday night the local GameWorks has this "Play your Way" thing going...basically you pay $10 and get unlimited credits on your card for four solid hours(from 7pm to 11pm). Grimshade and I decided to take advantage of the offer this week, this is a break from the usual once-a-year-on-my-birthday time that we attempt it. I thought it may be kind of fun to tell ya'll about the games we played through, maybe strike up some conversation about arcade titles...be it actual or MAME. Mortal Kombat 4: I started up on this one while waiting for Grimshade to arrive. Sadly, both sides' joysticks have been fucked up for a while. I did my best on the 2p side, and a guy came up and watched me play for a while, was hoping he'd actually join it...but it was a no-go. Speaking of the actual game, it's amazing how horrible it looks. I mean, the Zeus board wasn't anything impressive when it came out...and nowadays it looks downright awful, thank God it plays really well. I can't tell you what a dream come true it was when Midway announced MKG for the Dreamcast, which used *all* of the original, high-res textures the MK Team produced before having to lower them down to work with the shitty Zeus hardware. Let's Go Jungle: After grabbing some fries and iced tea we took a seat in the always-fun LGJ deluxe cabinet. Sadly, there's something wrong with the GPU(I think it's overheating) so there's all sorts of odd graphical glitches going on...but it's still a blast to play. The guns are mounted in the cabinet, auto-fire enabled and you can see your crosshair on the screen at all times. You start out in a mobile tour with your girlfriend(which Grimshade played, because deep down he's really a little girl), a stampede of huge-ass spiders shows up, eats your guides and leaves you fighting for you life with a couple of machine guns. I don't know what it actually runs off of(I guess I could look at the brochures linked above), but it's quite pretty...I'm a sucker for the lush jungle thing. As far as I can tell, there's only one point at which you can choose your own path...but it's kind of nice for replay value(I've now been through both, the first one I went through with Gen, I was the girl that time because he's just frighteningly manly). I could go on a bit more about it, but I'm betting I've lost most of you at this point...needless to say, it's a great game and I'd love to see it hit one of the consoles(though I'd guess the Wii is the only one it could possible make it to). Jurassic Park: The Lost World: I had been wanting to play through this one for years and was relatively excited about finally being able to do so. Sadly, I was seriously disappointed after finishing it. Though it's pure Sega and I loved being able to use the Stunner, it was just so short...and it seemed like it was the same boss fight(the T-Rex) over and over and over. There is still hope for a decent JP light gun game: Sega has done one for JP1, Konami did one for JP3(haven't played either, but I've seen both). Ballistics: Be sure to look at the link on this one, the cabinet is just odd: You actually *lay* in it to play. It's really wild, I mean immersive and all that but is absolutely ruined by developer design. You're racing in tubes, STUN Runner style, so you can cruise over the entire tube...should make for some awesomely fast racing, right? Nope. These idiots(the devs) decided to put all sorts of ship *stopping* obstacles on the tracks...every time you get up some speed, BAM - stopped cold. Man it sucks dick. Could have been such a great game. Available on PC, for those interested in trying it... Cycraft featuring Initial D: Only played one track in this, and am kind of glad I did as both Grimshade and I were pretty dizzy after getting out of the "pod". Had never played any of the various "Initial D" games but there's always a crowd around them(at this GW location, at least), comprised mostly of the kids who own those fast import cars. Anyway, it played pretty well, the powerslide mechanic was in full effect. Had it not of shaken me up so much I probably would have played through all tracks... House of the Dead 2: Believe it or not, I've never really played through this one. I've played through Typing of the Dead quite a few times, but have never played through the actual light gun game version. It was fun, much like part 1...and much like part 1, my hand was killing me after the first level(damn, everything just takes so many shots). Grim and I both almost gave up on the final, final boss...man, he just takes SO MANY FUCKING HITS. Still, I dig it...wish it were possible to play the Japanese version of it, with the Japanese DC Stunner on a US DC. Breaks my heart...mostly because there don't seem to be any decent light guns on the US DC. :( Mario Kart Arcade GP: Needing a serious sit-down break after HotD2, and with GW closing in around 30 minutes we decided to spend our last bit of time with Mario Kart. Like the others in the series, it had about five or six circuits with four tracks a piece. Sounds pretty good, right? Too bad the first and last track of *every* circuit are the SAME FUCKING TRACK. I'd ask why Nintendo pulled this stunt, but it's the typical milking we've come to see from both their software and hardware development. Anyway, it still played really well, had a good selection of character and the tracks were really pretty(I want to say it's running on something better than the GC/Wii hardware). It even has this feature where it takes a picture of your face before you start the race, then uses it to identify you to others during the race. What's even better is that it uses the head of whoever you picked, so if you used Peach, for example, you'll have golden locks draped about your face...it hilarious. Anyway, that's about it. Wished we could have gotten to Star Wars Trilogy, House of the Dead 3, 4, Virtua Cop 3 and the rest of the light gun games. Want to play through that Ocean Hunter as well...wish they still had Silent Scope. Bel |

Hmm, I thought for sure that Sega developed that Mario Kart arcade racer, I guess it was Namco though. The Triforce board is, if I recall, a Gamecube with a ton more memory, so it actually is a Wii. |

Man, it looks so much better than Mario Kart Wii for some reason...I don't know what it is. Bel |

Arcade Monitors are usually something totally better than SDTVs or HDTVs in that the put the individual game's best leg forward. |

If you have an import boot disc or gameshark, you can use the JP light gun with the JP game on a US DC. It's only the US release of the game that is coded to lock out the official Sega gun. And while I don't have a copy of the JP game to send you, if you need a JP Sega brand gun, sailorneorune has one that I could probably convince her to part with. |

I thought we had this discussion at one point and it was determined that it really did have to be a Japanese DC in order for this setup to work? That the import boot disc route wouldn't work as the US DC wouldn't allow the Japanese gun to work at all. If that's the case though, and all I'd need to do is get the Japanese version of HotD2 and a Japanese DC Stunner...I'm on it! Now, you're saying that the Japanese Stunner works fine with other US DC light gun games? Bel |

well, there aren't many other DC light gun games, but unfortunately, it is locked out of the US version of Confidential Mission as well. From what I understand, the other light gun games (Death Crimson, Virtua Cop 2, and the light gun mini game in that racing game) don't have the lockout. |
