I was going to add this to the Sony Sucks thread but I'll start a new topic. My 40gb (Spiderman 3) PS3 stopped reading any kind of discs a few weeks ago. Sony wanted $150 for repair, so I decided to fix it myself. First, I had to take it apart. I searched all around for a Torx Security Screwdriver and couldn't find one at Lowes or Home Depot. I ordered one from Amazon. Then using some tutorials on YouTube, took my PS3 apart. It's been apart for about a week and a half, I've been too lazy to clean the lense and test it, or just buy a new laser component. I'll get to it eventually. As bad as Xbox is, they're replaced my system 3 times in 4 years for no cost. |

Sorry to hear about that. The Torx screwdriver is indeed tough to find, and not really that cheap when you do find one...but if you grab one that has removable heads it comes in really handy as it'll open virtually *every* console out there with one head or another. I use mine to open the Xbox, Genesis games and just about everything else. What is the replacement Blu-Ray drive going to cost you? Even on sale, those things seem to be around $100...but I guess that's still cheaper than what Sony would charge. Do they want you to pay for shipping and labor on top of everything else? With the drive out of commission, can you still play stuff that's hard drive-based, like PSN games or whatnot? Well, at least you've got a kickin' library of other consoles/games to play around with until you get it all taken care of. Was sifting through your site and looking over the EGM reviews you had posted, brought back a lot of memories. I'm glad you're putting that stuff online. I do it too, but only for games I've reviewed so far. It's kind of funny to see just how far off they are on some of those reviews. ;) Scott is also trying to document all of their scores and is using my collection of EGM mags to do it. Ya'll ought to try to get together sometime...maybe you guys can share what info you've got so far, take the load off each other just a bit. :) I saw your post on clearing the 360's HDD cache...I've done it a few times myself, but like you mention, it doesn't do much. Sadly, they refuse to put out any sort of disk defragmenting tool for the 360, and that's real issue with slow performance. XBL is just hard on HDDs, we're constantly downloading and deleting stuff, fragmenting the fuck out of the poor thing to the point where it seems to take forever to access the stuff. After I play an Indie game, or something off the HDD, and then return to the dash, it takes around 30 to 45 seconds for the stupid ass "rings" to stop moving and show me the contents of the drive again. Sucks dick. Anyway, I'll force myself off the keyboard at this point. It was good to hear from you! I apologize for harassing you so much about the forums...I'm just a sucker for good conversation. :) Bel |

Apparently this is going around. I've run into three people in the last week now who have said the exact same thing. The Bluray drive broke, Sony blames the customer. It seems like I've heard that story before somewhere. |

I haven't added anything to my site in a long time. Back when I started it, I didn't know much about building websites and just used wordpress to blog it all. Over the past six months I've been learning PHP and MySQL and will change everything to a database format... eventually. I'm working on a dating site first. :) Cost of the Blu-ray drive is $60 on Ebay. I'm going to clean the lens first and see if that does anything. The 40gb PS3 uses a single laser to read blu-ray and cds/dvds. The newer ones use two lasers. The one laser version is likely to have these kind of disc read errors. That's what I hear. My 80 GB PS3 (MGS3 bundle edition, its the last of the backwards compatible models), lasted eight months and the blue ray laser in it gave up the ghost. "Luckily" it was still under warranty and they fixed it for free in around two weeks time. Even got the same unit back which I understand is unusal, but I think its because they try to give you the same SKU so maybe they didn't have any others around. With the BR laser broke, the unit still played DVD's and PS2 games fine...but when the machine cost $400 that tends to make one mad! |

You can get tons of Torx head screwdrivers from Harbor Freight. My favorite set are these: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=66601 but they have others |

Do they sell those Nintendo/Sega security screws that are the reverse of a torx screw? Either way do you know what that called so I can keep an eye out for deals. |

I have a couple of those, but can't remember where I got them; it was online somewhere. They're pretty nice, together they open the Xbox, SNES, various carts, etc. Man, I wish I could remember where I got them because they're great. If you look on Google for "Game Bit" you can find some, and reasonably priced too. If not, I can always shoot my set down to you for a while... Bel |

The risk of losing your hard drive along with the system is too high. I wouldn't want to send mine to them either. Hell I don't even want to send my X360 to Microsoft now either. You're basically crippled with a refurbished system if you can't connect online. >.< |

Yeah, it seems like any time you have to send a system in for repair, to any given vendor, it's just horrible. We've got the stunt Sega pulled on me when I had to send in my DC for repair, then the bullshit Dell pulled when I had to send in my laptop to have the fan replaced(I should have just done it on my own), then your experience with MS(and countless others) and now Sony charging $150 to do anything for the PS3 units. It's enough to make you just want to attempt an exchange at Wal-Mart or something. ;) Bel |

That's heartbreaking...the 60GB, fully backwards compatible PS3 is the only one I'd ever consider buying...and that's just mostly because I don't want to get a PS2. Bel |
