Smart way to rip DVDs?

I want to start putting some workout DVDs I own on my HDD for easier viewing. Nero doesn't want to, and I'd rather not have to mount any images, I'd prefer to just have the video files converted. I am not aware of any simple options to this but I thought I'd post to see if anybody else has any.

I use DVD Shrink for stuff that I'm sending my grandma. As its name eludes to, it can shrink the size of DVDs so you can fit a DVD-9(dual layer) on to a DVD-5(single layer). It allows you to even re-edit the DVD to you're liking(you can simply remove everything but the movie, cut the movie, etc. When it comes time to rip it, you can mess with the quality settings, delete stuff like audio commentaries, subtitles, etc. to help with the overall compression ratio that will be needed to fit the full movie down to a 4.6GB disc.

You can rip it to ISO if you want, but since you don't want to mount it you may just want to rip it to the "TS" folders(video and audio). From there it just leaves a single folder on your HDD(whatever the movie is called, or whatever you want to name it) and you just run the VOB files to watch the movie(virtually every player out there will do this, including DVD software like PowerDVD).

In terms of alternatives, you can rip a DVD with Dr. Divx(the first one only, I think) and it will produce an AVI of whatever size you specify(this is what people use when you see the movies on Bittorrent, and they're always around 700 megs. 700 megs of AVI, converted to MPEG2 comes out to be right around 4.3 gigs). You can also use Xvid or whatever. Nero Re-code will also do this, and outputs a file that only Nero can play, but is pretty high quality.

If you need any help, just post...I've been ripping my entire library for my grandma ever since I found out about DVD Shrink, so I've experienced quite a bit with that software, and others. :)

Yeah, it really is a great way to go. I usually aim for about 1gig on the file size. This helps balance out quality and size.

Wang's entire DVD library is on his various servers in the house. His wife and kids can just simply use the HTPC in their rooms, the kitchen or wherever to watch whatever they want, whenever they want. It's really slick.

Okay, I installed Dr Divx 1, pointed it at the .vob file I wanted to convert and it asked me to remove any sub files, I left it with only one file to load and it seems stuck at the detecting video screen. The screen just keeps cycling like it's working but never gets anywhere. What's the process with this?

Give that a shot and see how it goes...IIRC, that's exactly how I do it. It's all about the VOB files(which are the actual DVD video).

To see what I mean, try this: Rip a DVD to the "TS" folders using DVD Shrink, from there open one of the VOBs and you'll notice that it's the actual movie, in separate pieces. What Dr Divx does is take all of the VOBs, make them on solid file and then convert them down to Divx AVI format.

Note: You can also explore the contents of an actual movie while it's in your PC. You'll notice the folders I mentioned(Audio_TS is always empty, btw). You can examine the VOBs using various DVD playback software, but cannot simply drag them to your HDD and expect them to play without decrypting them via DVD Shrink(or whatever you're going to use).

I used to use DVDFab decryptor, you can use dvd shrink at that point to compress if you wish, or convert to AVI.
I'm thinking about what I want and what I need. I want a peaceful soul. I need a bigger gun

Well, there's a few...I use a combination of DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter. Sometimes there are movies that DVD Shrink can't crack, so you have to break out Decrypter, sometimes Decrypter can't crack it, so you have to break out Shrink. Bottom line is, if you want them to be around 1 gig, you've gotta get some compression in there somewhere, which is where Divx(or whatever) come in. I'm not sure of any programs that actually crack the DVD then compress it using your choice of codec(as an all-in-one process). Do you know of any?

Okay, DVD shrink is working with these workout vids. I'll just batch the vob files for Divx encoding later to free up the space. Thanks!
