Hmm, it looks like Sony gets to tell everybody in Europe what they can and cannot buy or sell, and when. That sounds like a company I should (or must) continue to support with exclusive dominance in the console market, don't you all agree? Eh comrades? http://www.gamespot.com/news/6161842.html?...estnews;title;2 But seriously, if I was in the Europe right now, I'd feel pretty damned oppressed... |

You know, I want to say that the way they are acting sounds a lot like Microsoft...but shit, that's just not accurate. They way they are acting is *worse* than Microsoft.

What I've been trying to say to people for some time is that Sony has *always* been worse than Microsoft. I mean seriously, what if MS promised that the next Windows OS would run your household appliances, do self maintence checks on your automobiles, and alert you to hazardous weather in the region and they just came out with another regular old OS with a new kernal? I know that's not far from what they've done, but they kind of stay on the other side of the line Sony jumped over back in '99-'00. I mean, it's like a car manufacturer claiming a car gets 60MPG when it only gets 30, people would sue, but nosir, not Sony, they're the savior of the Industry. |

I think price had a lot to do with it back then as well, though. I mean, if the PS3 doesn't perform up to spec, or they start getting non-stop dead PS3s(like the 360 had), for *600 fucking dollars* you can bet there are going to be some lawsuits. Bel |

Ummm...this is actually good news. Ebay is protecting consumers (from buying PS3s that may not even exist for 100k) where Sony was "protecting consumers" (from...buying imported software that isn't available in any other region???) |

http://www.gamespot.com/news/6169725.html?...estnews;title;0 Ken Kutaragi retires Sony chairman and CEO steps down from his posts to pursue other projects and "pass the torch on to the new generation." By Emma Boyes, GameSpot UK Posted Apr 26, 2007 9:54 am PT Ken Kutaragi, the 56-year-old "Father of the PlayStation," will end an era by retiring from his position as Sony chairman and CEO at the company's annual shareholders' meeting on June 19. In a shocking announcement, Sony has revealed that the decision was made so that Kutaragi could "pass the torch on to the next generation," and so that he can "pursue his dreams beyond PlayStation and accelerate his network vision." Mr. Kutaragi at E3 2005. Taking over his position will be current SCEI president and COO Kazuo Hirai, who will be promoted to president and CEO. Kutaragi commented, "I am happy to graduate from Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. after introducing four platforms to the PlayStation family. It has been an exciting experience to change the world of computer entertainment by marrying cutting-edge technologies with creative minds from all over the world. I'm looking forward to building on this vision in my next endeavours." He will continue to "support" Sony Corporation chairman and CEO Sir Howard Stringer as a senior technology adviser for the company, along with serving as an honorary chairman of SCEI. Kutaragi started his career at Sony immediately after graduation from the Tokyo University of Electro-Communications, and during the course of his long career at the company, he invented and launched the original PlayStation in 1994 and the PlayStation 2 in 2000. However, during a management shake-up in 2005, Kutaragi was demoted from the Board of Directors and replaced as head of the home electronics division. Last year, another Sony reshuffle promoted Kutaragi from SCEI president and group CEO into the position of chairman and group CEO. Stringer described Kutaragi as "a rare combination of a powerful visionary and entrepreneur." He added, "Not only has he created a multibillion-dollar business for the Sony Group, he has brought the industry into a new dimension. Sony has benefited tremendously from his vision, his creative genius, and from the very strong team he assembled and nurtured. As Ken moves forward to pursue new opportunities, we will encourage and support him. My support also goes to Kazuo Hirai, who is a terrific executive with a proven track record with PlayStation business in the US. I am confident that he will inspire and lead SCEI to new heights." While Stringer's latest words were particularly glowing toward Kutaragi upon news of his departure, the Sony CEO didn't always have kind words for him. In a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal, Stringer hinted at problems with Kutaragi, calling the Japanese executive "uncommunicative." |

It's worth noting also that this rendition of history in which Kutaragi "invented" the Playstation is not true. Olaf Olafson and Tom Kalinske started working on the idea, then Sony was working with Nintendo on the 32-bit add-on for the SNES. Only after both Sega and Nintendo had chimed in on the specs and then denied Sony access did the "Playstation" become its own console. Not only that, but the components of the first Playstation were old chips from SGI and whatnot, not in house developed stuff like Kutaragi did for the PS2. |

I had heard he was on the way out for how poorly the PS3 launch went. I guess I misread it or something. Ah well. I don't think I've been this happy to hear about news like this since Bernie got canned at Sega. ;) Bel |

I remember those quotes. He was adamant about the PS3 not being a game machine right up until the Wii was officially unveiled if I recall. |

http://www.gamespot.com/news/6181373.html?...estnews;title;4 Sony: No BC = more PS3 game sales Exec concedes that missing feature doesn't lower production costs much, explains that being able to play old games discouraged buying new ones. By Brendan Sinclair, GameSpot Posted Oct 19, 2007 12:11 pm PT When Sony first announced that it would release a cheaper 40GB PlayStation 3 without backward compatibility for the PlayStation 2, questions were asked as to the reasons why the previously standard feature was taken out. The company said in a statement that the move reflected "both the reduced emphasis placed on this feature amongst later purchasers of PS3, as well as the availability of a more extensive lineup of PS3-specific titles." The original Japanese and North American PS3 models included the PS2 Emotion Engine chip so they could reliably run older games by using proper PS2 hardware. When Sony released the system in Europe, the company said that the component would be taken out to reduce costs, and the system would handle backward compatibility with software instead, much like the Xbox 360 does. Speaking with the Wall Street Journal, Sony Computer Entertainment America CEO Jack Tretton shed a little more light on the issue this week. Although the move to software for PS2 backward compatibility was driven by cost concerns, the outright elimination of it was not. Tretton told the paper that taking support for PS2 games out of the new system isn't dramatically cutting manufacturing costs. However, by omitting the option of playing PS2 games, Sony hopes that new customers will instead spend their money on more PS3 games. He added that Sony's own research suggests that customers won't miss the feature because they probably already own a PS2. |
