http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/ea-h...-of-red-alert-3 EA halts work on PS3 version of Red Alert 3 Electronic Arts has stopped work on the PlayStation 3 version of Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3. The title was officially unveiled in February this year, and marked the return of the popular RTS franchise after seven years. No reason has been given for the move, reports our sister site Eurogamer.net. The title is still due for release on Xbox 360 and PC this autumn. http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/sony...and-the-getaway Sony stops work on Eight Days and The Getaway Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has announced that it has stopped production on two PlayStation 3 titles that were in development at the Sony London Studio - Eight Days and The Getaway. A statement from the Corporation read as follows: "It has been agreed that production of both Eight Days and The Getaway will cease immediately due to the redistribution of resources and budget. "This decision was made following an internal review of all games and it was deemed that with the incredibly strong list of exclusive first party titles coming up both this year and in the near future, resource should be reallocated to enhance those projects closer to completion. "Worldwide Studios has a reputation for innovative and entertaining games, with titles such as LittleBigPlanet, SingStar,Buzz, EyeToy and Eye of Judgement, and will continue to push the boundaries on all PlayStation platforms." The move follows shortly after the appointment of Shuhei Yoshida as the head of Sony Worldwide Studios, replacing previous company icon Phil Harrison, who departed to take up the role of president at the re-imagined Atari. Eight Days was first announced at E3 in 2006 with a trailer showing a mixture of what appears to be in-game action and cinematic footage, involving a shoot-out at a remote truck-stop in the Arizona desert. The Guardian reported just a few weeks ago that the title was "just ramping up to full production," suggesting that the decision was taken only recently to terminate the title. The Getaway, which was due to receive full attention once Eight Days had been released, was apparently still in the early stages of development. Sony London Studios was previously responsible for the fantastically successful SingStar and EyeToy franchises. There has been no indication that the decision would result in any redundancies. UPDATE: It has now been confirmed that these projects have been shelved permanently, and work is not scheduled to restart at a later date. |

Oh, no, that's not trouble. They're just canceling games because of their stellar line-up. I mean, too many great games is obviously a bad thing. Get on board man! |

Brackets added by me. http://news.vgchartz.com/news.php?id=1297 Metal Gear Solid 4 sells 1.3 million units [worldwide] on day one, drives hardware up 180% [70k extra units] in America! Posted by: Louie 14th Jun 2008, 2,407 views First day sales of Metal Gear Solid 4 reach 1.3 million units worldwide, PS3 hardware boosted 180% in America By Louie July VGChartz can exclusively reveal that first day sales of Metal Gear Solid 4, released on June 12th 2008 in most major markets worldwide, were an impressive 1.3 million units. Over 350,000 units of the the latest installment of Hideo Kojima's famous series were sold in Japan (along with various PS3 bundles) and over 400,000 units sold in the Americas. The American release of Metal Gear Solid 4, combined with the $100 Playstation 3 giftcard offer at retailer Walmart resulted in a 180% increase of Playstation 3 hardware sales. The 70,000 Metal Gear Solid 4 bundles supplied by Sony sold out immediately and with no confirmation of further shipments, it is expected that the hardware boost will be short-lived and PS3 sales will return to normal levels within the next couple of weeks. Many retailers have accused Sony of severely underestimating demand and suggest that they could have sold 2-3 times as many if the supply had been available. Playstation 3 worldwide sales have more than doubled [280k vs 140k weekly when Wii and DS consistently do more than 330k per week] compared to last week. Stay tuned for finalized first-week figures when they become available on VGChartz |

this isn't really news... everyone knew it would happen. It would be news if it keeps the 180% growth longer than a couple of weeks. In other news, my playstation3 ownership is still 0%, and likely to continue at that rate for a good long while. |

Well this is as positively spun a story as anybody could possibly create but it is actually bad news for Sony. 180% would be important if that shot the sales up to double of the competition, but it actually doesn't even make the sales of PS3 systems "acceptable." With the lack of systems sold in relation to GTAIV, MGS4 is already established to sell less and not affect system sales in the short run. |

I tried finding the 80GB bundle and no dice. The guy at gamestop said that Sony is going to make a 120gb model... and this was an attempt to clear out the 80GB stock. Really, why make the system a new color? |

Here's Quick hardware/software sales comparison between MGS4 and GTAIV. MGS4 is just not a significant title in today's market. Americas: Week End May 3rd: GTAIV Hardware PS3 1,217,429 99,000 Xbox 360 2,317,774 90,000 Week End June 14th: MGS4 Hardware PS3 502,427 122,449 I've placed the Xbox 360 version of GTAIV in there as a comparison. What we can see plainly is that even with significant promotions (Walmart discount, Bundle, etc) the PS3's sales did not jump above 360 sales by a meaningful amount. For the week ending June 14th Xbox 360 sold 60.5k. With no significant releases that week the 360 had five games in the top twenty and the PS3 only had two including MGS4. Note that when a console is on its way up software sales increase proportionately for that console and are cannibalized on any competing consoles. This scenario describes what the Wii is doing to the 360's software sales currently, and what the PS2 did to the Dreamcast, Xbox and Gamecube whenever a major launch occurred. Assuming GTAIV's failure to increase PS3 sales was strike 1, MGS4 is strike 2. Fortunately for Sony this is not a game of baseball and they have enough cash to pay off the umpire. My question is, if GTAIV and MGS4 don't matter, what will? http://www.vgchartz.com/aweekly.php?date=3...aker=&boxartz=1 http://news.vgchartz.com/news.php?id=1325 http://vgchartz.com/hwcomps.php?cons1=Wii&...39565&end=39614 |

Are you trying to say that MGS4 is not selling PS3s? I'm sorry but with this game bundled in on the PS3 it is. Are you denying that the PS3 received a sales spike? |

The PS3 did not see a significant sales spike. It's sales were 20k higher than the spike the system received from GTAIV. I am saying that a significant sales spike would have launched the system's sales over 200k for the week. As it is, 120k will turn into 90k next week and the system will be back down to 45k like it was last week before too long. |

Nobody is hurting like sony is hurting right now. http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/ps3-...n-loss-for-sony PS3 pricing caused $3 billion loss By pricing the PS3 below its production cost, Sony has lost over USD 3 billion during the past two years according to information revealed in the company's fiscal 2008 annual report. According to a Kotaku report, Sony lost USD 2.16 billion in 2007 and USD 1.16 billion in 2008 on the PS3. The console allegedly cost over USD 800 to manufacture but which was sold in the USD 500-600 range when it was launched in 2006. Sony has warned investors that its large-scale investment on the PS3 may not be fully recovered if the console does not achieve favourable market penetration. |

Narf: http://vgchartz.com/hwcomps.php?cons1=Wii&...39565&end=39621 PS3 console sales dropped back down to 55k for the week ending June 21st (week two after the MGS4 launch). This is identical to the 360's sales for the week despite the fact that nothing major has launched for the 360 within a few weeks. I'll ask again, if MGS4 and GTAIV can't do it for the PS3, what will? |

This is why the Warner pay off was so important to Sony. Imagine if they didn't pay Warner that $500,000 to go Blu-Ray exclusive? You want to talk about losses!? Hehehe, I crack up just thinking about how fucked they'd be. This is why, after giving it some thought, I think Warner kind of let themselves go really cheaply. Sony was dead, dead, dead unless Blu-Ray won. Warner could have asked for a cool billion, and even if the other nazis in the party, er members in the BDA would not have paid it, Sony would have, they'd have to, to stay alive. Now, there's nothing anyone can do. Blu-Ray is the monopoly, the PS3 outsells the 360 in *every region of the world* and now all Sony has to do is wait for the money to come back. MS is doing a decent enough job of hanging in there, and the 360 price cut will put more pressure on Sony, but nothing short of an alliance with Nintendo will do anything to the PS Empire. This reminds me a lot of MS's strategy with the original Xbox: They knew they weren't going to win(this is an actual quote), but they had to at least compete to get the brand name out there. Once that, and Xbox Live, was established they took it and attempted to take on the vast PS-owning market. Change it around and: They knew they weren't going to win, but they had to at least compete to get the brand name out there. Once that, and Blu-Ray Live, was established they took it and attempted to take on the vast DVD-owning market. One can only hope that digital downloads tear them a new asshole. I know that I, personally, download Blu-Ray rips non stop(just doing my part) in order to fuck them as hard as possible. My Blu-Ray machine is a Dell Optiplex GX 270. ;) Bel |
