PS3 sales tumble in Japan as Metal Gear effect drops off

Sales of the PlayStation 3 have dropped in Japan following last week's boost for the system after the release of Konami's Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.

Hardware numbers from Media Create show the PS3 shifted 20,336 units for the week ended June 22, compared to over 75,000 units last week.

However, Sony can still claim the best-selling hardware in the region, as the PSP handheld sold 59,351 units in the past week, more than Nintendo's Wii (41,037) and DS (36,599).

The nine year-old PlayStation 2 continues to outsell Microsoft's Xbox 360, with 6,346 units compared to 2,555 units.

As predicted, PS3 sales have plummeted back to where they were four weeks ago (week three from MGS4 launch) to 49k. I don't intend to troll this point, but nobody has answered. If MGS4 can't do it, and GTAIV didn't do it, what will make the PS3 start outselling the 360 by a meaningful scale and thereby "crush" it?

Again: The second best selling car in America is expensive as fuck as gets disgraceful gas mileage.

Again: America decided to go with Blu-Ray, a format that cost twice as much as HD DVD and wasn't even finished hardware.

Again: We live in a world where the best selling console, by far, is a fucking GameCube with more ram and a shitty, gimmicky controller and the *best* game on the system is a series of mini-games(on the *packed in* disc) because each taken on their own would barely equal one of the many shitty Flash-based games that get released on PopCap on a daily basis. Idiots can shake the controller and feel like their "playing the game"....all of the sudden, this is "innovation" rather than pandering to those with lower intelligence quotients. All this brought to you in a maximum of 480p(man, that's *almost* Dreamcast quality!!!).

Again: We live in a world where the best selling portable is, again, another gimmicky piece of shit. Wow, you mean it has TWO WHOLE SCREENS and you can write "pussy" and "fart" on one of them with the stylus? Sign me up, this "innovation" unlike I've ever seen before! Granted, it's kind of disappointing that 99.9% of the games use one of the screens as a static "map" or "move tutorial", but man, those 3.6 games that actually make use of both screens....their just magical.

It's not exactly the smartest nation...just give it time, and GT5 and we'll see where it's at at the end of the year.

There's *noone* on this planet who would be happier if Sony was still far, far back in third place overall at the end of the year...but with the PS3 outselling the 360 every month, even without stuff like GTAIV or MGS4 making a huge difference, with the idiot populous buying every Blu-Ray release they can get their hands on and this nation's track record for sucking Sony's dick on a daily basis...I just can't see how MS can win.

Especially when you figure Sony is just jacking the 360's OS as they go along(just go looking for what firmware 2.40 added). Just think, the biggest feature of that update was that fact that you can now hit the fucking "PS" button and it brings up the dash. Bravo Sony, how did you ever manage such an awesome and original upgrade? Shades of HD DVD here people. Think about it like this: Blu-Ray players are *just now* up to the point where HD DVD players were *WHEN THEY LAUNCHED THE HD DVD FORMAT*. People are applauding them(Sony) for it too....and they just keep buying new Blu-Ray players in support of the change. $400 to $500 per new, "upgraded" Blu-Ray player too. Intelligence....gotta love it.

Dude, there's no hope...

Too bad GT5 probably won't get released until 2010. Heck, people are STILL waiting for the PSP version, and that was supposed to be out years ago.

Honestly, bel, you keep acting like Microsoft is just going to pull a sega and quit the very instant sony's installed base exceeds theirs.

How much fun did you have with your original Xbox? Did it really matter that it only had around 20-25% of the industry's marketshare? Did you ever run out of fun games to play or new releases to look forward to?

Even if Sony completely outsells MS like they did last gen (which, for the record, I don't believe they will do), that's not going to have much, if any impact on the games released for the 360.

Even spinsters in action can't make sense anymore. The PS3 in Japan for June sold approximately 138k to the Wii's 235k. Two weeks out of five the PS3 sold below 10k, every week out of five the Wii sold over 40k. On top of that, the one week the PS3 outsold the Wii by 30k did *nothing* to even dent the overall sales of either console. Then this bozo shows up and gives everybody a wet willy.

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/the-...anese-wii-sales

PS3 closes in on Japanese Wii sales

Sony's PlayStation 3 Japanese console sales showed signs of catching up to those of the Nintendo Wii in June, according to the magazine publisher Enterbrain, as reported by Reuters.

The Wii still managed to outsell the PS3 by 1.7 to 1, putting it at the top of Japanese hardware sales for a seventh consecutive month, but the ratio has fallen significantly since the 6-to-1 lead the Wii had the month before.

The past few months have seen the PS3 reap the benefits of a number of high profile titles not available to the Wii that may have boosted console sales, including Grand Theft Auto IV and the PS3-exclusive title Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.

According to Enterbrain, Nintendo Sold 235,990 Wii units of in the five weeks ended June 29, while Sony sold 139,494 PS3 console units.

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/sony-cuts-earnings-forecasts-by-57

Sony has slashed its earnings forecasts by 57 per cent and downgraded its operating profit forecast for the full year ending in March 2009.

The electronics' company had expected to make JPY 470 billion (USD 4.8 billion/GBP 2.9 billion), however, profit is now expected to be JPY 200 billion (USD 2.04 bullion/GBP 1.2 billion).

Sony cited the reason behind the drastically reduced forecast as due to flagging demand for its products as well as the strengthening yen's impact on its export business, particularly on the company's videogame activities.

Sony said it also expected its electronics segment, including the LCD television, compact digital camera and video camera businesses, to be lower than forecasted, blaming poor demand brought on by the slowing global economy and greater competition to cut prices. As a result the company's net income is expected to fall short of July's forcast by 38 per cent, dropping from YPY 240 billion (USD 2.4 billion/GBP 1.5 billion) to JPY 150 billion (USD 1.5 billion/GBP 945 million).

This news breaks shortly after Sony Computer Entertainment's president, Kaz Hirai, confirmed that the company would not cut the price of the PlayStation 3 for the Christmas season, despite drastic cuts in the price of its main rival, Microsoft's Xbox 360.

Hah! How does that correction help anything? "It looks worse on PS3. No wait just the backgrounds, textures and framerate are worse on the PS3." Just wait Bel, Rage is going to be the same way.

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/microsoft-q1-revenue-up-9-per-cent

Microsoft Q1 revenue up 9%

Microsoft has reported its Q1 2009 financial results, headlining with a 9 per cent increase in overall group revenue to over USD 15 billion.

The majority of those sales came from the Business, Client and Server and Tools divisions, although Entertainment and Devices (EDD) took USD 1.814 billion - down from USD 1.929 in the same period last year, although the latter number was skewed by the Halo 3 launch in 2007 and was also impacted by the Xbox 360 price cuts.

Importantly, EDD - which oversees the Xbox and Microsoft Game Studios businesses - posted another profit. For the three months to the end of September 30, operating income hit USD 178 million, up from USD 167 last year.

However, while the division overall performed well, revenue from the Xbox 360 and PC platforms fell by 22 per cent - despite the company shipping 2.2 million consoles, a number up by 400,000 in the previous year. That figure puts lifetime sales of the console at over 22 million, just 2 million shy of the original Xbox platform.

EDD's numbers were instead buoyed by sales of software for the Mac, the Zune and mobile and embedded device platforms, which was up 51 per cent to USD 216 million.

The increase in operating income was partly driven by decreased Xbox 360 manufacturing costs, while sales and marketing expenses were also down.

The company added that it expected the rest of the fiscal year to demonstrate sustained profitability, despite predicting "revenue to be flat or to decrease relative to the prior fiscal year due to year-over-year variations in launches, volumes, mix, and prices across our portfolio of products and services," according a statement.

Group operating income rose by 3 per cent to USD 5.999 billion, while diluted earnings per share were up by 7 per cent to USD 0.48.

So much for the press being unable to critique Sony. Sales = everything. Sony was banking on market dominance with the PS3's design costs.

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/playstation-3-unlikely-to-break-even-says-dfc-intelligence

PlayStation 3 unlikely to break even, says DFC Intelligence

Research firm DFC Intelligence has said that the PlayStation 3 is unlikely to break even during its lifetime on sale.

Speaking at the Game On Finance event in the US, senior technology analyst Wanda Meloni argued that "Sony has the most to lose with this current generation," according to a report by Gamasutra.

DFC expects that the PlayStation 3 will only maintain between 40 and 50 per cent of the games market by the end of the current generation, compared to 67 per cent during the height of the PS2 era.

Yesterday, Sony's financial results revealed that its Games division is managing to cut its losses. For the three months to the end of September 2008, losses were at JPY 39.5 billion (USD 405 million), compared to a loss of JPY 96.7 billion (USD 992 million) for the same period the previous year.

PlayStation 3 hardware sales are growing, with 2.43 million units sold for the same three months, compared to 1.12 million the previous year. Unit sales of PS3 software are also up from 10.7 million to 21.1 million, although a decline in PSP and PS2 games has left the company with a drop in software sales overall.

Sony is convinced it can educate its audience into liking its products again.

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/we-must-work-harder-on-ps3-psp-marketing-sony

We must work harder on PS3-PSP marketing - Sony

Sony Computer Entertainment needs to "work a little bit harder" on getting across the message about the cross-platform functionality between the company's flagship living room and handheld consoles.

That's according to SCE UK boss Ray Maguire, who told GamesIndustry.biz that it's a contrast with the messaging when the PlayStation 3 was first released - which was weaker on the games side of things.

"When we first started - because all the functionality [on the PS3] was radical - we talked about that functionality," he said in an interview at the Games 3.0 event last month. "And in doing that, maybe we weren't strong enough on the games side of it.

"Now, with the strength of the games we've got coming out, this Christmas we're definitely about the games. From our own first party, and also third party, there's a feast of games for PS3 this year.

"At the same time though, because we've been out for a couple of years now, people are starting to understand and discover the functionality of things like PlayTV, and that's created the desire for people to upgrade to larger hard disk sizes. I just recently put a 320GB drive in mine.

"I think people are starting to come to grips with that, but what's probably lesser known is the relationship between PS3 and PSP and the Remote Play functionality.

"Those are the things we have to work a little bit harder on - the GPS functionality, the camera functionality - all of those elements which of course give us content to sit on the PS3," he added.

The full interview with SCE UK boss Ray Maguire is available now.

He did say that it's content to 'sit on the PS3'. Now if he can just educate all of us uneducated hoards of how that should convince us to buy a PS3 and a PSP, and navigate their convoluted menus to get them to enable these useless features.

What does sour grapes look like?

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/nxe-loses-sony-netflix-titles

NXE loses Sony Netflix titles

Hundreds of titles from Sony Pictures Entertainment made previously available to stream via Netflix on Xbox Live have been withdrawn.

The movie titles have only been restricted on the Xbox 360 and are still available on PC, Mac and other Netflix compatible devices.

"In the case of Xbox 360, a few hundred titles are temporarily unavailable to be streamed via the Xbox game console," Netflix's VP of corporate communications Steve Swasey told MTV. "Those titles are still available to be watched on subscribers' computers and on TVs via other partner devices, and we hope they'll be licensed for Xbox 360 shortly."

"As watching instantly becomes a more prominent part of the Netflix service, our goal is to have all of our streaming content licensed for all of our partner devices," he said.

"We're doing well in this area, but it will take some time before we fully achieve that goal. Today, titles regularly come in and out of license and there is a natural ebb and flow to what we have on license at any given point in time."

This is exactly what I was talking about. Sony will do whatever it takes to keep digital downloads out of the picture. AppleTV is one thing, as Apple is a BDA member, Sony couldn't pull this stunt on them...but MS, on the other hand. They'll do what it takes to keep the millions of 360 owners from being able to stream Sony content, especially HD Sony content...

I'm pretty sure I can live without all of those critically acclaimed Sony movies. I can't even bring myself to file share one of them much less waste any of my Netflix trial on them.

Well, the problem is, stuff like Spider-Man is a Sony property, as are the new Bond films. I won't boycott them....but at the same time, I won't feel guilty downloading Blu-Ray rips of them either. ;)

Spiderman 3 completely blew, so it belongs on Bluray. I am boycotting the new Bond films, I can't stand the new guy and the completely unnecessary nut bashing torture scene in the last one still has be disgusted.
