Oooh, that's nasty... http://ps3.ign.com/articles/936/936820p1.html UK, December 9, 2008 - Sony is to close 10% of its manufacturing sites, losing some 8,000 jobs in the process as the Japanese company feels the effects of the deepening economic crisis. Sony is still believed to be incurring a loss on every PlayStation 3 that it sells, and financial expert Katsuhiko Mori told BBC that although "the number sounds big, this staff reduction won't be enough. Sony doesn't have any core businesses that generate stable profits - the next thing we want to see is what is going to be the business that will drive the company." The cutbacks come as Japan feels the impact of the global recession, with the country's economy reportedly shrinking by some 0.5% in the past three months. Expected to be implemented by April 2010, there has been no confirmation where the cuts will take place, nor what impact they will have on Sony's gaming division. |

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/playstation-division-under-review-as-part-of-corporate-changes PlayStation division under review as part of corporate changes Sony Computer Entertainment has confirmed that the PlayStation division is currently involved in the review affecting the wider Sony business Sony announced this morning that it will axe 8000 jobs and reduce investment in manufacturing, although SCE would not detail whether those cuts will have a direct affect on the PlayStation group. "In order to stay competitive in the accelerating global network environment, we will always carefully review and make structural changes, if necessary, in order to further expand and strengthen the PlayStation business around the world," said Sony Computer Entertainment in a statement. Sony said today that its electronics division has been affected by the current economic downturn, and it plans to downsize or withdraw from "unprofitable or non-core businesses." However, some believe the announced measures won't be enough to help the company, with one analyst stating that Sony needs to prove which parts of the company are going to achieve profits in the future, rather than reduce headcount. "The number sounds big, but this staff reduction won't be enough," said Katsuhiko Mori, fund manager at Daiwa SB Investments, to the BBC. "Sony doesn't have any core businesses that generate stable profits - the next thing we want to see is what is going to be the business that will drive the company." |

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/xbox-360-attach-rate-grows-to-8-1-titles Xbox 360 attach rate grows to 8.1 titles The Xbox 360 has a software attach rate of 8.1 titles, according to Microsoft, with third-party games generating more revenue at retail for publishers than the Wii and PlayStation 3 combined. That's according to Microsoft, in a month where third-party game sales on Xbox 360 topped USD 298 million. "We've created the optimal line-up of experiences this holiday season for families seeking lasting entertainment value, particularly during rough economic times in the US and abroad," commented Don Mattrick, senior vice president of the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft. "We have the largest library of games, TV and movie content and the most expansive and rewarding social experiences. We're confident Xbox 360 will continue to drive record sales around the world this holiday and beyond." Total software sales for the console in November reached USD 408 million, according to Microsoft. The Xbox 360 sold 836,000 units in November, with Gears of War 2 one of the best-selling games for the system. |

If people were buying HDTVs, they'd *obviously* be buying PS3s instead of Xbox 360s. http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/slow-hdtv-sales-impacting-playstation-3-uptake Slow HDTV sales impacting PlayStation 3 uptake Slow sales of high-definition television hardware in the US is holding back sales of Sony's PlayStation 3, as consumers feel the effects of the economic slowdown. That's according to analyst Michael Pachter, who also said that consumers had been opting for cheaper Xbox 360 console deals, rather than the more expensive PlayStation 3 offerings. "There was likely some substitution of Xbox 360 for PS3 purchases, due to recent price reductions for the Xbox 360 and the bundling of the console with two free games," said the Wedbush Morgan specialist. "In addition, we believe that PS3 sales are being impacted by lower demand for HD televisions as a result of the recession." Sales of the PlayStation 3 during November were 6.1 million units, compared to 12.4 million Xbox 360 consoles. However, Pachter believes that during the first half of 2009, sales for Sony will begin to look up as consumers show interest in exclusive titles and Blu-ray capabilities. "We believe that several PS3 exclusives, notably LittleBigPlanet, along with focus on the Blu-ray will drive hardware sales over the next six months," he said. He also added that he expects December sales for the entire hardware market in the US to show further improvement over last year. "We do not expect the recession to impact videogames in December; rather, we think that as Nintendo increases Wii supply further, Sony markets Blu-ray, and Microsoft rolls out its New Xbox Experience, hardware sales will show year-over-year increases in December." |

well, the Playstation Home beta is now available to everyone with the Sony console, and so of course I decided to try it. If anyone felt like the NXE was a bad idea, it's miles better than this Playstation Home garbage. Playstation Home is like a bad joke - not just bad, but offensively so, like making repeated cracks about retards to someone you know who has a kid with down syndrome. I deleted it shortly after, but I think Penny Arcade actually summed it up pretty appropriately... "Here is everything you need to understand about Home, if you should accidentally launch it from your XMB: press and hold the Playstation button in the center of your Dual-Shock or Sixaxis controller. From the menu that appears, select Quit." |

hehehhe, that's pretty good. I'd still like to see it...but yeah, it seems a lot like Blu-Ray: It needed another few years of development, but they rushed it to the market in order to compete. Bel |

http://news.teamxbox.com/xbox/18467/WSJ-Hope-Fades-for-PS3-as-a-Comeback-Player/ There's the article. What I find so amusing is that even after Sony helped fund the Warner Bros payoff, it's *still* not helping them stay afloat. I figured strong Blu-Ray sales would have done something. Thing is, and I don't know how many people actually know this, Sony's been giving away Blu-Ray players with the purchase of Sony HDTVs. Just giving them away... To me, it's like they are putting more resources into Blu-Ray than they were in to the PS3, which was a mistake. They are only part of the BDA...they are the *only* part of the PS3. It's kind of funny to watch them make these mistakes...;) Bel |

As amusing as this is, I call shenanigans. Though I probably shouldn't use a word that I need a spell checker for, this story stinks. The Xenon and Core processors are very different types of processors with very few similarities other than what types of loads they are specialized for. I posted a detailed comparison on these forums earlier this year. Whatever IBM might have developed for the Core that is in the Xenon, it doesn't show in the overall design of the chip or its capabilities. The only similarity that this article points to is that there are in fact multiple cores on each processor's die. That capability has nothing to do with the Core's development though, so what exactly made its way from the Core to the Xenon before the PS3's processor was even finished in specs? |
