Went to go see my girl, Miss Milla, in the new RE film on Saturday...and it has to be, hands down, the best fucking 3D I've ever seen in my life. Blows Avatar out of the water. Now, granted, Avatar was the first to use those new cameras and JC did the best he could with this new, new technology...but RE improved on it in every conceivable way. Scenes of note: When they're swimming under water: The various shit floating in the water was just incredible, gave it such depth. The shower scene where they fight that Ax Guy from RE 5: The water droplets will blow your fucking mind, as will the water spouts. The fight was awesome, too. Crawling through the tunnels: This one may have just been me. Being claustrophobic and all, I already don't like scenes where people are in situations like this...but to see it in 3D, the depth of the rocks in the tunnel...jeez. I will definitely go and watch this a couple more times before it leaves theaters. This is a movie I could actually see getting one of those 3D HDTVs for. Man, it was awesome. Now, in terms of the film...if you've seen the other RE movies you know what to expect. I wasn't real thrilled with whoever it was that played Wesker...he looked so much like Val Kilmer I just kept questioning why they just didn't get him instead. He just really didn't pull it off, imo...but at least you really only have to deal with him at the beginning and end of the film. I thought that the ex-Prison Break guy was a perfect fit for Chris Redfield: Looks like him and everything. Claire is back, though suffers memory loss so she's not really like she was in Extinction. Still, she whips that Ax Guy's ass and shows off some solid 3D cleavage...so it's all good. Milla was great, as always. No more read hair though...and her look is a lot different than the other films. I loved the Amelia Earhart look she was sporting at one point. Everyone else was just sort of there. Sons of Anarchy fans will immediately notice Tig, and not just by appearance. Not having played RE5 I missed Jill at the end of the movie, after the credits start rolling(had to check IMDB to find out who that lady was). She looks nothing like she did in RE: Apocalypse, but now mimics her look from the RE5 DLC "Lost in Nightmares". All in all, I liked it...but I think they overused the whole "cool scene slow down" machine. There are just so many times they either freeze or slow down the camera to a crawl to show off some 3D effect...and the first time they use it(the plane crash), it really is something to see...but then they do it again, and again, and again...and again. It just starts to loose it's impact after a while, though the 3D still makes it worthwhile. What kills me is the creeping DVD release...where this moving is going to loose *a lot*. I first noticed this with Beowulf. Despite not using any sort of technology like Avatar or RE:AL, it was still rock-solid 3D...but even the HD DVD version was...disappointing. Granted, it's still a quality film and still worth watching...but the lack of any sort of 3D makes a huge impact. I feel it's going to be even worse with RE:AL since there are just so many scenes where it's blatantly filmed to make the most of the effect. It would be nice if they would just pack in some fucking 3D glasses with the movie...granted, the effect won't be nearly as good, but it'd be something. I've heard that a few movies have done this, so we'll see if they can manage it with RE:AL. Well, until next time...(yes, *next time*, they leave it with another RE film definitely coming) Bel |
