New TV with gaming mode

I couldn't resist, $499 for a Toshiba 40G300U 40inch 120 hz LCD TV. It has an 8ms update speed and a gaming mode, in addition to a 480i mode besides. According to AVS Forums this set should have everything needed to play games in HD or SD resolutions quite well.

The stupid part is that I already spent all of the money I wanted to this month before this deal bushwhacked me. It was really the 120hz thing that did me in before I even realized that it had gaming mode and 480i native resolution. I'll be trying to sell my 40" Toshiba RPTV, which really was just fine for our needs, for about $200 to compensate. Hopefully there are still some folks out there who appreciate a great Rear Projection set.

Believe it or not, a lot of HDTVs have "gaming modes" built in. Pleasure Kitty's does and there was even an RCA model back in the day that called it the "Xbox Mode". Like you mention, it just simply increases the hz rate. On PK's HDTV it's described as a mode "allowing you to more easily complete moves that require 1 second(or less) response times". I have it turned on, but it doesn't seem to do much for the Wii games. Still, it's a nice option to have. I wonder what kind of difference it would make if you're doing any PC gaming on it...

The Sony CRT HDTV finally died(the Power Supply went) so mom decided to pick up this deal at Best Buy($386):

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Dynex%26%23153;+-+40%22+Class+/+1080p+/+60Hz+/+LCD+HDTV/9693695.p?skuId=9693695&id=1218150610512
(I guess they either don't advertise it for that price anymore or the deal has gone away)

What I like about this thing is that SD gaming systems...well, the one I've tested so far(the N64), don't look like a complete, emulator-like, blocky-ass mess(like they did on the Sony CRT HDTV). I could almost get used to it...but you still can't use light guns on it, so I will keep looking for my dream CRT SDTV(any 32 to 36 inch with PiP). Wish I could find someone to repair the Sony CRT HDTV for a decent amount...but it's so heavy, I can't take it anywhere and most people want almost $100 to come out and even just look at it. Maybe I'll see if I can get it out to the garage and just hold on to it...see if I can ever get it done. I hate to give it up, but it's just too big and heavy to lug around anymore. Would make an awesome monitor, for someone with the space though...

According to that AVS FAQ, the lag generated by HDTVs is due to 480i/240p resolutions being upscaled and that costing more than a few frames of time. Supposedly this TV having a 480i mode and a gaming mode will mean that I won't notice any lag. That 8ms update speed and 120hz rating more than implies that this set really shouldn't present any problems.

Some of the technophiles I've talked to recently insist on scanlines being visible for true old school presentation. My RPTV doesn't have scanlines though, and I've gotten used to it. After seeing how my in-law's LG LCD set upscaled Wii Composite to look better than S-Video, I think I'm going to have some fun tinkering when it arrives. ;)

I'm still not going to feel good about it until I sell this perfectly good RPTV though.

I keep forgetting to follow up on this. I have repeatedly tested this Toshiba 40G300U on all of my systems and it is just flat awesome. I would highly recommend this for Wang's Mamebox setup, it has a setting for everything.

I just got done playing Sega GT through my VGA to Component box at 1080i, that was awesome. Toejam & Earl on Genesis looks and plays great especially with Game Mode off and Clear Frame on (no Film Stabilization). Splatterhouse on on my DUO/R is awesome, SNES looks the way it always does. Master System, 3DO, etc. all work and look the way I expect them to.

The only down side is that I ended up having my Saturn hooked up with S-Video, through a Radio Shack signal amp/splitter that outputs Composite. I just wanted to be able to record its S-Video output on my HTPC (which also works wonderfully). Composite looks better on this set than S-Video did on my old RPTV anyway.

- edit-

It occurred to me that two sets are not alike in their settings. Clear Frame mode basically makes "Game Mode" not work and slightly increases controller lag. I have found that I can play Sonic and Street Fighter games with Clear Frame mode on, and that turning Game Mode on shows me all of the Composite artifacts I didn't like on my older HD set. So unless I feel controller lag, I operate with Clear Frame on.

Film Stabilization is something else entirely. This is how a "120Hz" set gets that silky smooth high framerate that nothing was actually filmed in. This set has Standard and Smooth settings, and both settings increase controller lag in games to what I find an unacceptable level. I also haven't noticed the Film Stabilization settings improving 2D or 3D framerates for some reason, it only works on movies, especially HD-DVDs! I just ordered the complete Matrix Trilogy, the Ocean's Trilogy, Pitch Black, and something else on HD-DVD for my wife's upcoming birthday because these things just look so incredibly smooth on this set.
