Well, one week of Kinect in the states resulted in roughly 500k sold, and several other Kinect games dominating the top ten charts over at VGchartz. Also, the first Sony hardware game is God of War PSP at 68K. It seems like a slow season though...

-edit-

Oops, that was only two or three days on sale.

Kinect hits 1m milestone

Microsoft's Kinect motion controller has sold one million units worldwide in its first ten days of availability, the Seattle tech giant has revealed.

The Xbox-maker is adamanent the 130 add-on will go on to meet internal sales targets of five million by the end of 2010.

"We are appreciative of the response we have seen from consumers that has culminated in sales of more than 1 million units in the first 10 days on the market for Kinect for Xbox 360," said Don Mattrick, president of the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft.

"This is a great start to the holiday season, and we will continue to work with our retailer partners to keep pace with high demand."

While Kinect has been available since November 4 in the US, the European launch was just last Thursday. Microsoft expects further momentum during next week's Black Friday sales, and claims the device will be available in over 60,000 retailers in 38 countries come Christmas.

Oh yeah, then there's this:

http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/10/xbox-360-kinect-bundles-outsell-ps3-move-bundles-5-to-1-in-novem/

Xbox 360 Kinect bundles outsell PS3 Move bundles 5 to 1 in November

In his latest report to the game industry, Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter shed some light on the battle between Microsoft's Kinect and Sony's Move motion control systems. Pachter reports that Xbox 360 Kinect console bundles outsold PlayStation Move console bundles in the US by a margin of five to one in November. According to Pachter, "about half" of the Xbox 360 consoles sold in November were part of Kinect bundles, while PlayStation Move bundles made up for "about one fifth" of total PS3 console sales for the month.

With Microsoft reporting 1.37 million Xbox 360s sold in November, that puts the Kinect bundle figure somewhere in the range of 685,000 units, thus putting Move console bundles around 137,000 units. Of course, it's worth pointing out that these figures only refer to console bundle sales and not to individual Kinect and PlayStation Move sales. According to Microsoft, global Kinect sales have topped 2.5 million units. Sony has reported that 4.1 million PlayStation Move units have been shipped to retailers, though the company hasn't disclosed actual sales numbers.

So much for Add-ons being a bad idea. Where are all of the critics blurting out things like "it'll fragment the markets"?

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2011-01-06-kinect-smashes-sales-target-with-8-million-sold

Kinect smashes sales targets with 8 million sold

Microsoft has announced that motion sensing camera Kinect has sold over 8 million units in the 60 days since launch, smashing the target of five million set before release.

The success has helped push Xbox 360 sales to more than 50 million units sold worldwide, said CEO Steve Ballmer at CES in Las Vegas yesterday, and the Xbox Live service now has over 30 million members.

"A new member joins Xbox Live every two seconds," said Ballmer. "Kinect and Xbox Live have helped drive consumer demand for the Xbox itself. Xbox 360 has been the number one selling console every month for the last six months here in the United States. And sales for the Xbox 360 are now over 50 million units worldwide.

He added: "As many of you know, we predicted that we would sell about five million of these Kinect sensors by the end of the holiday season. We beat that forecast. In the first 60 days we sold over eight million Kinect sensors worldwide. This has been the biggest holiday and the biggest year ever for Xbox."

Microsoft also showed off a new social application for Xbox 360, Avatar Kinect, that allows users to interact using Kinect and their own Xbox Live avatars, promising to map facial expressions. Due in Spring, Avatar Kinect will be free to Xbox Live Gold subscribers.

Ballmer also revealed that the Netflix service on Xbox Live will get Kinect support in the Spring, as will Hulu Plus, later this year.

I really thought people would have gone to the next step up from the Wii, you know Wii 1.5...er Playstation Move, but it sounds like Kinect is all the rage....with a vengeance. Everywhere I go, all I hear about is Kinect. Wang's kids love it, this guy at work, he bought it for his son and he actually ended up playing it all night. Some sales guy showed up to the store, after being asked "How was your X-mas", he replied with "Well, we got the kids this Xbox thing that comes with a camera. You play the games without a controller, it's amazing!". Gen's mom stole his 360 because she got a Kinect for X-mas, and wanted to do that various workout titles.

It sounds like it's a hit, I'm just waiting for the second generation of software to come out so we can see if some of the minor issues can be worked out first.

if the wii is any indication, 5 years down the road they'll still be ironing out the issues and making stupid design decisions just to incorporate a particular feature that would be much better served by a simple button press.

Well, one thing they'll definitely have to figure out is how to make your character move on screen. I don't see how they'll pull that one off with the limited range the Kinect will track movement. I guess we'll see how it goes though.

I got a chance to play with the Kinect over at Wang's house and it blew my mind...but I'll have to post about that another time.

Now, it's important to note that this is NOT EVEN REMOTELY WORK SAFE!

Kinect interactive sex games. No shit, they've already started on them.

...and I thought that that hack that lets you play Super Mario Bros with the Kinect was retarded...;)

Doberman...and a kitty(behind me). This is over at my mom's house...which I'm at while I get back on my feet(financially). It's pretty funny, the cats are always running around because my moving around so wildly freaks them out...drives the Kinect camera nuts. Pretty funny to watch.

Have some thoughts, just don't have time to post them just yet...well, maybe one: GameTrailers is a bunch of cunts. That Sonic Free Riders is FUCKING AWESOME!

What I'm thinking is this: It's a special effects job from the second it makes(or looks like it makes)contact with his foot. He splices in the cat coming towards the camera, then splices in some footage of him dropping the cat(with it landing on its feet, as they always do).

Now, the next problem is the very nonchalant "meow" that comes out of the kitty. Have you ever stepped on a cat's tail? It's not this really low-tone, drawn out whimper, it's a LOUD-ASS ROAR. Kind of like this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3OyxbY7E20

Plus, have you ever seen a cat take a hit like that and then just sit down calmly?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QhGOvkQBgK0

Now, don't get me wrong...it's great work, it's like that RoboCop vs Neo short film or something:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DR9yxT5AE9I

Living with cats all my life, I just don't see normal kitty behavior in this video. ;)

Now back to our regularly scheduled kitty-programming: Whiskers doesn't like Joy Ride!

I had a neighbor back in elementary school (asshole) who used to think it was funny to throw his cat at his ceiling fan in his living area with vaulted ceilings. The cat, regardless of whether it was flipped end over end or spun like a football, would just take it, land, and walk away afterward.

I do think your theory of and edit job is interesting though, all the guy would have to do is train so that every time he kicks he is moving exactly the same and at the same distance from the camera. That's time consuming but not impossible.

Seriously, I love Kinect and all...and those brief areas in Sonic Free Riders where you have to act like you're swimming are pretty fun, but a whole game of it!? Um, no...
