Capcom, nothing but sequels

Straight from the horse's mouth.

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2011-05-09-kejii-inafune-reveals-capcom-insider-gossip

The former head of development at Capcom has claimed that the publisher and developer previously instituted a de facto policy of nothing but sequels, which Keiji Infaune had to circumvent at the risk of his position.

According to a Famitsu.com report, translated by Andriasang, Inafune's revelations came from a lecture at a Japanese film school. There he revealed that at the end of the PlayStation 2 era of consoles Capcom had a rule that required that 70 to 80 per cent of new titles must be sequels.

Inafune claims that in practise, "any suggestion for a new title would not receive approval". This apparently included his original pitches for Lost Planet and Dead Rising, but Infaune ignored his management and continued developing the games despite their rejection.

He then purposefully exceeded the game's prototype budget, correctly assuming that management would believe that having spent so much money there was no choice but to continue development into a full product.

Both gamers were much more successful in the West than in Japan, but Inafune characterised the sales of 2 million copies overseas to 200,000 in Japan as the "correct" proportion.

In his last years and months with Capcom, Infaune's relationship with the company had become increasingly antagonistic - as he repeatedly criticised Capcom's own titles and the Japanese games industry in general.

After leaving Capcom he announced the founding of two new companies, although no new games have been announced thus far. However, as part of his lecture Inafune insisted that Japanese developers should be thinking more of the Asian, and particularly Chinese, markets - which may give a hint as to his future plans.

Thank God I didn't waste my money on MvsC3(can you imagine buying it, then paying for the two extra characters only to see Capcom re-releasing it with them in it..and at a lower price?). Besides it being horribly dumbed down, and almost boring to play, now Capcom is pulling yet another...well, Capcom and releasing an update not even a year in to the game's release. Hopefully the extra characters and "added gameplay enhancements" will turn it in to something I will want to play....not just something I play when I need a break from the new, and unbelievably excellent, Mortal Kombat.

The only Marvel vs Capcom I would want would be the first one on Dreamcast. I hated the second one, and I can't stand 2.5D fighters. Since I already have Marvel Superheroes vs Street Fighter though, I doubt I'll ever even pick that one up. Capcom got their fans early and they got them young, and all they have ever had to do is make sequels and updates to sequels ever since.

http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2011/07/21/capcom-blames-mega-man-legends-3-cancellation-on-lacking-fan-involvement.aspx

Whoever is at the helm of Capcom Europe’s Twitter account is causing waves with a fanbase still reeling from Mega Man Legends 3’s cancellation earlier this week. The publisher encouraged fans to pitch in on the development process for the game, so canning the project angered the hardest of hardcore even more than it usually would. Now the CapcomEuro twitter account is rubbing gasoline-soaked salt all over the flaming wound.

Yesterday CapcomEuro tweeted the following:

“it’s a shame the fans didn’t want to get more involved :-( if we saw there was an audience for MML3 people might change minds”

If you’re not sure why this would strike a nerve with fans who poured their time into the game, keep in mind that there are dedicated pro bono community devs like Brian “Protodue” Austrin who committed around 15 hours a week doing work and promotion for game. He, and fans just like him, worked very hard to ensure the game would see the light of day.

Capcom’s tweet provoked humorous responses from users such as @dertek’s snarky comment, “how exactly do you want people to be “more involved?” Do you want us to make the game for you?”

To which CapcomEuro replied, “well yes that’s the point of the Dev rooms.”

It’s all very dramatic. The exchange between CapcomEuro and the community, which you can read more of at Protodude’s Rockman Corner, contains a lot of slams and excuses. Austrin has sources who say over 15,000 users were active in the Devroom during the community-involved development.

There have also been rumors that cosplayers were turned away at the Capcom booth at San Diego Comic-Con 2011. One nasty bit of gossip involves community manager Seth Killian being punched in the face. Capcom-Unity denies all of this, tweeting, “we welcome all cosplayers to our booth at Comic-Con. Anything else you’ve heard is downright false.”

Capcom lifted up their fans to heights they likely never dreamed of – aiding in the development of a highly anticipated Mega Man game. Then they tossed them back to the ground, and these tweets are figurative kicks of sand to the face. It will be interesting to see how Capcom attempts to restore its reputation in coming days.

Speaking of the new MK... did you see the announcement trailer for the newest DLC character?

Mortal Kombat is getting Freddy Kruger.

I saw it. I'm indifferent, but not against it. I haven't felt the need to buy any of the DLC yet, but if it was given to me for free I would use him.

Is Baraka in the new MK? Wouldn't Freddy Kruger be redundant then? I guess all of the Ninjas and half of the women already are though.

I really like mvsc1, even though most will tell you that part 2 destroys it. I love 2.5d fighters...I love the fusion of 2d sprites and 3d backgrounds. Have loved it since cvssnk1(another one I really still like, even though part 2 is fucking awesome).

I know a lot of people don't like the way the sprites clash with the backgrounds(especially when it reveals their blocky edges). Newer games do a good job of hiding it by upping the res of the sprites and/or softening their edges.

The mk season pass makes the dlc stuff do-able, so look in to that. I like skarlet, I love kenshi but don't much care for rain. Freddy is so fucking awesome I can hardly believe it.

Baraka is in the game, but he's much different than freddy, trust me. As for the ninjas and women, trust me, this isn't old mk...everyone is quite different from each other now. the only move they all share now is the uppercut.

The MK Pass isn't available on the PS3 version, so I'm waiting on a special offer or something. I'm getting the free compatibility packs so I can at least get some classic outfits out of the batch.

I wonder why they don't offer it on the ps3? I guess you fuckers can't have it all. ;) I would concede that the ps3 version is far superior in virtually every way, with the extra character, extra background, the controller and, most importantly, running in 3d.

I rented it for gen's ps3 so we could play with kratos and he's great...but, of course, no one in america owns a 3d hdtv and if they do, they don't own the glasses. Gotta love it...

Yeah, that's about right. I mean, back in the original Xbox days when they'd do that, but it was free, it was fine. I mean, granted, we'd like to have it all at once...but coming back a while later to see what else has been unlocked was kind of cool, sort of kept the game fresh. Now, to pay for that shit would have sucked...and though I know I've unknowingly probably done it, had I of know I most likely would not have paid.

Makes you wonder if Capcom will pull the code for the DLC characters before they put it out on the PC...because you *know* the players will hack the game to unlock them on the day it's released(sometime in May, IIRC).
