When 900 years old you reach, look as good you will not

Seventy five years ago, a great Queen lay on her death bed. Maiara Basir was a calm, strong Queen who was both well organized in her meetings and understanding in her judiciary rulings. It was a great time for the territory financially. While she wasn’t well loved by all, the majority of the territory had fond memories. She had ruled Glacia from the time she was twenty and when she died, she was surrounded by her children and grandchildren. Not a single one was a Queen and while she had tried her best to foster great Queens, no one seemed prepared to handle the responsibility. Everyone had thought Maiara would last forever and had never planned for her death.

For almost forty years, the territory throne switched hands pretty quickly. A Queen would take on the throne and burn out, trying to live up to Maiara’s memory. The longest Queen lasted five years before she completely deteriorated. In response, the territory began to fall into shambles. The faith in the Queens was diminishing as was their attitude. The air of the territory was quickly turning both unstable and violent.

A Queen finally showed some real interest in ruling the territory long term. Her name was Dhiard Kermi and she was a Rose-Jewelled Queen. She had a very strong Triangle about her and she seemed to be able to take on more than most people could conceivably handle. The desperation for having a good Queen was so raw that no one took the time to notice what the long term effect of her decisions had led too.

No one took the time to notice who it was that was truly pulling the strings of the throne.

Uzziel Henson was Dhiard’s Consort when she took the throne. The Warlord Prince had been gifted with the Sapphire and Grey Jewels but had such difficulties with relating to people that no one took him seriously as a potential ruler. He and his brother Uriel, a Purple Dusk to Green Prince, charmed Dhiard to their view of life. Her Steward, Feare Dorcha, was an old family friend of both families and he was close enough to both the Henson and Kermi families that everyone considered him an uncle. A Sapphire-Jeweled uncle. With their Jewels, she was able to garner quite a bit of support. The most promising part of her ascension was the wedding between Dhiard and Uzziel. It was a great point of celebration for the territory and for the first time since Maiara’s death, things seemed to be looking up.

Within three years, the true colors of the Queen and her Triangle started to come out. Feare had always had some unsavory hobbies and, having been a huge influence in Uzziel’s life. It quickly became apparent that the contracts that were being made favored their friends and cohorts. Slowly, the males of the territory gained more and more power. More Warlord Princes were found ruling Provinces while Queens were pushed to the Districts. Small businesses had difficulties thriving when the palace wasn’t supporting them. Crime was on the rise and, as long as the palace wasn’t affected by it, there was very little order.

As much dismay as there was, no one had enough strength to fight the court that was on the throne. At the slightest whisper of a rebellion, the guards were quickly sent to decimate the competition. The strong Queens were quickly destroyed. A few escaped to neighboring territories, but it had always been easy for Uriel’s guards to find them. They only allowed for one Queen to live after they found her connected to an Eyrien court who had many of the same political and social beliefs as they did. After a few years, they lost interest in her as their eyes turned to Glacia.

All the while, Dhiard was left to her own musings in the palace. She was more of a figure head than else. She had two young boys who she spoiled rotten. They were the perfect distraction to keep from realizing something was going on in the territory. When she did question the males who were truly running the territory, Uzziel simply stroked her cheek and told her not to worry. He would take care of everything.

When Feare died, he was replaced with a far more slimy male, Naga Indu. Naga’s connections brought the courts some real trouble with other territories when some of the goods that were traded turned out to be contaminated with poison or were defective. Dhiard had been on the throne for thirty years at that point and Naga had been doing his job for only two years. Being a friend of Uriel, he was given a little leeway. The focus of Uzziel and Uriel was in trying to keep Naga from ruining what they had built. They were being attacked on an almost weekly basis by forces. The friendship between Naga and Uriel snapped. Even after Naga’s “dismissal,” the attacks kept coming. The distraction gave the territory an opportunity to begin to change.

Coming back from Askavi, a young Queen began to make all the right friends. While her Jewel would have normally garnered great interest, trying to avoid attacks from other territories kept the palace from taking too much interest in her. The seventeen year old Queen, Zoya Sabina, started making nice with the District Queens, asking them to tell her about the territory she left right after her Birthright Ceremony. She and her escort, the Eyrien Warlord Prince who was a close friend, toured all of the friendly Districts and found a single Province Ruler who didn’t seem to be happy with the puppet Queen.

She climbed up the courts the old fashioned way, ruling the Kholm District and then the Rostova Province. She played nice with Urriel and Dhiard. In the meantime, she maneuvered her political and business connections with the help of her father. With a little inside information, she was able to remove most of her people from the borders of Centauran before a particularly harsh battle broke out between the the Centaurians and the Territory Guard. The High Court had given her specific instructions to keep her guards away from the fighting and so she focused elsewhere. The palace.

With a weakened and separated Territory Court and a few strong alliances that she trusted, the Sabina court destroyed the court with quite a few casualties. There was outrage while the process of choosing a ruler was decided and enacted. Six months of almost complete anarchy while petitions were made but in the end, Zoya Sabina won out by a very slight margin. She immediately replaced a portion of the old rulers with people she trusted which wasn’t too difficult considering how verbally they attacked her after the decision was made.

The road to recovery proved to be a difficult one. Every step of progress that was taken was quickly destroyed by opposing forces. The injured and destroyed continued to come out of the woodwork while fewer people willing to help them appeared. The province queen who replaced Zoya Sabina, her newly discovered cousin, was murdered, causing personal grief in the territory court.

Even as connections were made with Dea al Mon, things were a bit shaky. The future was still unsure as the next wave of life took off. The best that everyone could do was prey to the Darkness and hope for the best.
