The Beast; Henry Philip ‘Hank’ McCoy
Topic Started: Aug 2 2011, 02:11 PM (262 Views)
the Beast

Full Name: Henry Philip ‘Hank’ McCoy
Nicknames/Alias: Hank, to nearly everyone that knows him, Nerd (an ‘affectionate’ or, to be exact, tolerated name given to him by Archangle) Magilla Gorilla (Pyro, Blob, BoomBoom and most of the brotherhood team call him by this name. Pietro and Wanda do not call him by this)
Codename: The Beast/Mutate 666/ the Negotiator
Gender: Male
Affiliation: X-Men
Occupation: Doctor of Genetics, Scientist, Inventor and Member of the United States Delegation to the UN representing Mutants
Character Type: Canon

Age: Beasts age is a matter of dispute due to how unstable his genes are and how different his body now is from its original human form. From what he can tell from his own experiments he is physically in his late twenties to early thirties though his body shows signs of lasting many years beyond that... though he can’t be exactly sure how long.
Height: 5'11
Weight: 402 lbs
Hair: Blue
Eyes: Blue
Playby: Allen Kelsey Grammer
Appearance: Covered with blue fur, Beasts nose ends in a snout which is filled with fang-like teeth; His bestial appearance includes pointed ears, claws as well as unusually large hands and feet. In fact; Beast has the largest shoe-size of anyone in the world – ending in a size twenty. He was even up for entrance in the Guinness book of world records at one time but the fact that he almost never wore shoes (as his claws tore through them) discounted him from the entry… that and he was a mutant.

Most of the time, Beast is clad in outfits ranging from a black polo sweater and tan cargo pants to a black tee-shirt and baggy white swim-trunks and even to a pair of half-cut jeans immense flip-flops. He’s been called a college professor more often than not – as well as a nerd – but even so, no matter what outfit, he retains the use of his glasses. Many of the X-Men at the school (even the students) have wondered what the purpose of the spectacles he wears are since his eyes can see things better than nearly any mutant in the school – even better than Mystique or Wolverine.

One of the jokes that the gossips in school make is that he just wears them to make himself look clever.

Whenever Beast is working in his medical bay (whooshing doors and all) he always has an ankle-length white lab-coat and a stethoscope on. In his medical bay he is all business – he’ll use light humor to put his patient at ease but he is never drunk, never hung over and never under the effect of any sort of drug. He’s there first and he leaves last – he works. Compared to him the little engine that could is stumpy little work-shy twerp. His medical bay is constantly cleaned (he would never tolerate anything else) and many of the X-Men who’ve had to pull nurse duty will often try to get out of it…

As it turns out, Beast works his nurses to death… explaining why they don’t last beyond two weeks.

Aside from his passion for his medical bay, Beast also has a pocket-watch he wears in every outfit – it was a gift from Professor Xavier upon his graduation and has a picture in the cover of his graduating class and Professor Xavier. In the back of the watch inside the secret compartment is the playboy shot of Alison Blair when she had to take that job for a year. Whenever he’s nervous or under stress his thumb will trace across the compartment its hidden in and rub back and forth as he thinks. Not even Professor Xavier knows about that picture… well… at least he’d never TELL anyone if he did.

Personality: As a boy, Henry McCoy wondered why he wasn't one of the "lucky ones". If he had to remain a mutant, why did he have a power that made him look and sometimes feel like a beast? He continued to struggle for the acceptance of others. After college and his own journey through Xaviers school; Hank became a man of arts, letters and the sciences. In fact, Beast was very much the Renaissance man, and has always remained so despite how many people may treat or see him.

Despite his ongoing battle with the demons of loneliness and rejection, he has an inveterate prankster wit and, aside from his brutish exterior, Beast is the most literate and eloquent of the X-Men, possessing a million-dollar vocabulary. Refusing to live a dual life as Kurt Wagner and other physically mutated people do, Henry is open and honest about his appearance. A short-whirlwind relationship with the Mutant known as Alison Blaire was the one and ONLY time he hid his Bestial form, and that was to protect her career. Though the relationship ended sadly - for Beast - he has cherished their time together despite the fact that he had to violate one of his personal beliefs to do so.

His 'tastes' in fashion are a little bizarre. Despite his large size and furry appearance, he will go through the store and even to the library in a black sweater and jeans wearing his trademark glasses and munching on his favorite snack food (Twinkies) with little to no care over how people see him. This is partially due to his great size and demonic exterior – no Mutant-hater short of an army would even approach him for fear of what he might do to them. And partly because he is so well known publically that - by and large - even most humans respect him. Those that have are usually foolish enough to attack him are often put down before they can do any damage because of how good a negotiator Hank is. That 'negotiator' talent of his led to Hank (unlike Charles Xavier who prefers to remain a neutral party in the growing conflict) to take a governmental appointment in the United Nations as a member of the U.S delegation. His official assignment is to represent mutants – being recognized frequently as ‘the negotiator’ by the press and many members of the public, because of how he’ll often turn his providence of mutant representation, to the debate of any subject ranging from Christianity to the subject of Abortion.

Unfortunately, while his peers in the intellectual community know this and clam to respect him, they often go out of their ways to spurn him. For instance, despite his work for both the United States and the UN and VARIOUS technological designs now in use, he has never received a Nobel Prize for his efforts or even been nominated. Even more insulting, to a scientist such as him; he has yet to be invited to the National Academy of Sciences despite his multiple applications over the years. You would be surprised at how many different excuses have come up… but all of them boiling down to the fact that they still considered him a VERY controversial man - a mutant who has 'infiltrated' the government.

A devout Episcopalian and a Doctor, Hank has spent most of his life playing mediator between the various superhero and mutant teams around the world. Because of his vows as a doctor and his Christian faith, few people fail to trust him and even fewer would choose not to rely on him. A well-known Twinkie connoisseur, an expert biochemist and a stubborn activist; Beast has always been focused on the X-Men's goals of building better relationships between man and mutant. Immersing himself in his place as a member of the American delegation, his life as a Doctor and his love for his friends and family - Beast holds hope that (in the world he and the other X-Men dream of) he'll finally be known more for the genius within than for the creature outside.

Goals: World Peace - not just human/mutant peace, as Hank believes that to be too limiting a goal. But peace worldwide

Fears: Absolutely terrified the he will continue 'devolving' until nothing is left of Henry Philip McCoy but his beastly shell

Weaknesses: One of Beasts biggest problem is not his modesty; no, that’s gotten him out of a lot of problems so he’s come to rely on it. It’s not his tendency to turn into Hitler the minute he enters his medical bay; the people who work with him may end up trying to put their nether regions into the liquidizer, but nobody runs a quicker or more efficient hospital than Beast, so the professor has yet to call him on that. No, Beast’s biggest problem is his self-doubt. Despite how many years he’s been alive, and how much he’s done over those years. Beast, deep down, still BELIEVES the peers that discard him that say he is just another genius with delusions of grandeur.

Another problem with Beast, is that no matter how much good he does – or how good his intentions – that if something (no matter how big or small) goes wrong. He immediately assumes that whoever he’s wronged will turn on him. His elderly parents have often worried about the him because he continues to think that people will abandon him – they worry that when they pass on he’ll be left alone and will try to continue working himself to death. His workaholic attitude and personal abuse has lead to many of the X-Women that live at the mansion to convincing their boyfriends or husbands to try and get him to take a day or two off… which often leads to a big mess because Beast decides that he can do even MORE work WHILE he’s resting.

Beast is not a fool, but as his body almost never requires any form of sleep (leading to him constantly working until the fatigue toxins build up enough to make him pass out) his work will often lead to him forgetting to rest. Another personality weakness of Beasts, is that he will do just about anything for a suitable supply of Twinkies – the largest supply he ever got was when Rogue wanted to borrow Logans motorcycle. He still hasn’t figured out what to do the left over crate from that adventure. Finally, ever since his first furry mutation, Beast has lost more girlfriends than Betsy Braddock has had hairstyles. As a result, Beast has problems believing that ANY woman could like him – believing that the pheromones he produces are to blame if a woman so much as flirts with him; which is why he usually ignores it and simply flirts back.

Meaning, that if a woman ever were actually attracted to him, it’d probably never occur to him that his own personality or mind would be any kind of factor in a woman’s feelings for him – because, after all, it’s his powers doing it… right?

Sexual Orientation: Straight

Mutation:

Super Strength: Beast has always possessed some degree of superhuman strength, the limits of which have varied at times due to subsequent mutation. During his teens, he was able to lift approximately 1 ton. After mutating into his simian form, and after this mutation eventually stabilized, his strength was increased to the point where he could lift about 10 tons, which was sufficient to smash through a brick wall with a single punch and to tie an iron barbell into a knot. Although Beast has since mutated into a somewhat larger, more feline form his strength still remains at the 10 ton level.

Super Dexterity: He can perform many tasks with his feet as easily as a human would do with his hands. His manual and pedal dexterity are so great that he can write using both hands at once or tie knots in rope with his toes. Because of this, Beast can run and move at speeds that are slightly beyond the natural physical limits of the finest human athlete. He can run at speeds up to 40 miles an hour over short distances, particularly if he runs on all fours.

Super Stamina: Beast's highly advanced musculature produces less fatigue toxins during physical activity than that of an ordinary human. He can exert himself at peak capacity for several hours before the buildup of fatigue toxins in his blood begins to impair him. As a side effect, Beast almost never needs to sleep – as the toxins can be satisfied by simply consuming enough food. Beast also possesses a powerful healing factor. This enables him to repair injuries much faster than a normal human. For instance, he can recover from minor ailments, such as a cold, within a few hours. More severe injuries, like broken bones, can heal within a day or even twenty hours. It has been seen that, while his healing factor wouldn’t enable him to regrow a whole limb, should Beast loose a limb (and the limb is reattached through stitches within six hours) then the nerves and muscles will re-grow – repairing and saving said limb.

Super Agility: The Beast's agility, balance, and bodily coordination are enhanced to levels that are beyond the natural physical limits of the finest human athlete. Like some of his other powers, his agility has varied at times due to ongoing and subsequent mutations. While in his simian form, he had the ability of a great ape combined with the acrobatic prowess of an Olympic level gymnast. He could walk a tightrope or a slack rope as easily as most people can walk on a sidewalk. He could also walk on his hands for many hours, or perform a complicated sequence of gymnastic stunts such as flips, rolls, and springs. He can easily match or top any Olympic record at gymnastics apparatus. Upon mutating into his feline form, his agility remains roughly the same, though it has taken some time for him to become accustomed to the physical changes.

Super Acute Senses: Hank possesses enhanced, acute senses that are comparable to those of certain animals, enabling him to see and hear distant objects more clearly than a normal human, and identify and track someone purely by scent. He also possesses cat-like night-vision.

Super Durability: The Beast's bodily tissues are harder and more resistant to certain types of injuries than the bodies of normal humans. His physiology can withstand great ‘widespread’ levels of damage; meaning he can withstand physical impacts, such as falling from several stories or being physically struck by many superhumanly strong beings that would either severely injure or kill a normal human with little to no discomfort.

Regenerative Healing Factor While nowhere near as advanced as Wolverine's healing factor, Beast does possess a healing factor that enables him to repair mild to moderate injuries much faster than a normal human. For instance, he can recover from minor ailments, such as a cold, within a few hours. More severe injuries, like broken bones, can heal within a few days, whereas normal humans might take weeks or even months. His body also 'super-processes' any poison, radiation or toxin it absorbs so that it doesn't harm Beast. Meaning it would take a LARGE dose of even the most dangerous poisons or radioactive material to kill him.

Weaknesses:

Pheromone Secretion: As with the average animal, Beast has periods of ‘heat’ when he produces an unusual scent. However, because of the human DNA mixed in with the feline and ape genes this ‘heat’ affects those around him rather than him. To put it in plain terms; every few weeks, Beast begins to secrete pheromones that attract members of the opposite sex. This has lead to troubles for Beast because the pheromones are meant to attract ANYONE who is female with a body that contains genes even vaguely similar to human DNA.

This means that only those who are male or whose DNA is sufficiently different from the norm (namely Epsilon or Delta level mutants whose bodies are so twisted by their powers that the pheromones can’t affect them. Or aliens sufficiently different from human chemistry) for there to be no effect. These pheromones are one of the things that has lead to Beasts long history of rejection – as a woman will fall in love with him due to the pheromones but because he cannot sustain the ‘period of heat’ they will lose interest and eventually begin to think about how the ‘man’ they’re dating looks and then leave him.

Bestial Limitations: As a side-effect of his tissue’s ability to withstand high levels of ‘widespread’ damage such as a heavy impact or a weapon like a club or Mace, his tissue is weak against ‘focused’ weapons such as standard firearms and bladed weapons. Also, because of his super-powered senses, bright lights and loud noise can cause him a great deal of pain. His endurance to such things is very low and he’ll usually be reduced to a huddling furry mass in the quietest/darkest corner trying to relieve the pain caused by such things.

Carnivorous Desires His latest mutation has left Beast with an unceasing craving for flesh. The desire to hunt and prowl comes over him strongest during the night and can sometimes leave him scatter-brained or in some degree of pain from trying to resist it. Such is his fear to give into these desires, that he will often go out of his way to control these urges, even when they SEEM harmless, out of fear for what he could do to someone should he give into them.

Other Skills/Abilities: Henry McCoy possesses a genius-level intellect and is a world-renowned biochemist with great insight into mutant genetics and evolutionary biology: a peer of Professor Xavier, Moira MacTaggart, and Kavita Rao. He also has expertise in chemistry, physics, differential equations, electronics, nano-effusive devices, anatomy, philosophy, ancient cultures, art history, musicology, and literature. He is a polyglot – capable of speaking nearly every language in existence (save Welsh he often jokes) and even a few dead languages.

Beast is also an accomplished keyboardist, pianist and a talented drummer, writing jumbled sonnets and musical passes whenever he's worried or focused on a problem.

Also, Beast is an excellent hand-to-hand fighter. He gained his initial combat training from Professor Xavier, and then continued his tutelage in combat gymnastics from experts such as Wolverine, Iron Man and Captain America. He typically uses a freestyle form of combat, similar to that of Spider-Man, which allows him to make full use of his great strength and agility. During times of anger, however, the Beast is known to resort to brawling and street fighting tactics.

History: Henry McCoy was a mutant, born with the power of simian-like enhanced agility, reflexes and strength. Ashamed of his long arms, oversized chin and huge feet, he accidentally induced a secondary mutation after drinking a biogenic serum that he had developed and then a further mutation he underwent to save the life of him and his friends.

Henry McCoy's father, Norton, worked at a nuclear power plant where he was exposed to massive amounts of radiation during an accident. Norton was unharmed, but the radiation affected his genes, and as a result his son Henry was born a mutant. Unlike most mutants, Henry showed signs of mutation from birth: unusually large hands and feet. He was also endowed with an innate superhuman intellect. Thanks to his enhanced agility, strength, and speed, Henry became a star football player as a teenager. He hid his mutation and thirst for knowledge in plain sight - until the school asked him to leave after he was exposed as a mutant.

Hanks remarkable athletic abilities and brilliance attracted the notice of Professor Charles Xavier, who was forming the original X-Men and offered Hank, who excelled in the classroom, the chance for unlimited academic opportunities at his prestigious School for Gifted Youngsters. The costumed criminal named El Conquistador, however, also took note of his abilities and captured McCoy's parents in order to force McCoy to aid him in his criminal schemes. With the help of Xavier and the X-Men, Henry defeated the Conquistador, and he then joined the X-Men, taking the codename "Beast."

Under Xavier's tutelage, Hank's days were rich with differential equations, Proust and workouts in the Danger Room. A brilliant student, McCoy completed his doctoral studies and finally left the X-Men and Xavier's school to take a position as a genetic researcher with the Brand Corporation. There he developed a serum that acted as a catalyst for activating latent mutations. (This serum would become the basis of the Mutant Growth Hormone.) In the hopes that it would give him greater control over his current powers and physical form; however, on drinking the serum, McCoy underwent radical physical changes. He grew grey fur over his entire body, his ears became larger and pointed, claws sprouted, and his canine teeth became larger, resembling fangs. The serum also further increased his superhuman agility, endurance, speed, and strength, as well as enabled him with an extraordinary healing factor which repaired damage to his body as fast as it was created.

Eventually, McCoy left Brand, joined the original incarnation of the Avengers, and – realizing how much good he could do for mutantkind if he revealed who it was behind the fur – he publically announced his true name and heritage. During this time, he became friends with Wonder Man when an encounter with Quasimodo caused his life force to be virtually expelled, which resulted in the gray fur becoming blue and the loss of his original healing factor – replacing it with the lesser version he’s retained to this day. His friendship with Wonder Man left Beast with a stronger sense of 'inner' confidence (as Wonder Man respected him and his advice) so when Wonder Man showed him the press release concerning one of his former students (Dazzler) who had been revealed as a mutant and taken to the life of a wild party-girl and drunkenness (even calling her the 'queen of decadence)Beast took it upon himself to find and question the young woman as - to him - this seemed completely out of character for her.

Finding Alison, the furry mutant was shocked to not only find her suffering from a major drinking problem but also a small drug problem... and a growing loss of control over her powers. Noticing the almost 'submissive' personality she'd adopted Beast became enraged when he found this beautiful strong girl under the sway of some sort of Mutant 'mastermind' calling himself Max. When Alison's powers spiked out of control and she fled Beast struggled to follow her but the fight that followed caused Beast and Wonder Man to lose her. When they finally recovered her Beast realized that her powers had 'attuned' themselves to her emotions. Suppressing them as he had once taught her would no longer suffice. Half delirious with pain, emotionally unstable and depressed Dazzler was slowly nursed back to health until her powers were at least stable - but as she still wasn't 'happy' (as she had difficulty controlling her powers when she was upset or scared or sad) she still couldn't control them.

Attempting to bring the 'Dazzler' back (as Alison had given up her stage name) she was signed up for a concert audition that Beast bought tickets for (arriving in a hood and cloak so as not to reveal their connection) but Max and his 'friends' had rigged the concert so that their acolytes booed and mocked Dazzler. Causing her powers to grow even more out of control. When a demon-like creature was let loose on the stage Dazzler was almost killed until a team calling themselves the 'Gladiators' arrived to protect her. Their powers - much like Dazzlers - led the fearful woman to tell Beast that she wouldn't and couldn't go back with him as they could protect 'her friends' from her powers. When Hank tried to convince her that this was just another escape and that she couldn't 'hide' from her abilities behind a helmet and a code she simply told him to leave. This prompted Beast to angrily state that he wouldn't come for her anymore and he stormed out.

Depressed over his loss of the young woman (as he blamed her lack of control on himself and had become infatuated with her) Beast let her go with the Gladiators... though kept a steady tab on her over the next few weeks.

Tracking her to the beach Beast apologized for saying he wouldn't come for her anymore and that he still cared for her - prompting her to assure him that she was happy with the gladiators as they gave her the control she'd lacked. Later that night Beast - spying on the Gladiators - watched as they cut down a young mutant. Running to find Dazzler - as he was afraid that she would be killed the same way - Hank was shocked when she revealed that she not only knew of the killing, but approved of it as the gladiator wasn't 'strong' enough to fight. Shocked at her lack of care Beast broke into the main office and discovered crates of drugs - one particular being marked with Dazzlers name, weight and genetic code. Caught in the act Beast himself was drugged and led into the ring against Dazzler. Unlike Dazzler however Beast's body didn't process the drugs the same way and he managed to break through the fog around his mind and stop himself before Dazzler was injured.

Unfortunately Dazzlers mind was still in the thrall of the medication and invariably beat Hank to a near-bloody pulp before Beast got through to her. Realizing what's been done Dazzler was told about what happened and - turning on the assembled Gladiators - managed to convince them to throw off their leader and restructure their organization. Getting some help from the larger Gladiators Alison, holding Beasts hand, told him that THIS TIME she was going to care for him.

A few weeks later - after the information at the Arena was made public - Dazzler's popularity began to rise again and she started taking gigs once more. Meeting on the beach Hank and Dazzler (having grown closer) started to talk about where they'd like their relationship to go when some of Dazzlers fans find her. Afraid of what their 'association' would to her career, Hank tried to hide himself before Dazzler stopped him and led him away - hand in hand. Later that night, however, Dazzlers powers staredt to spike out of control again and she told Beast she has to go back to the Gladiators as they're 'good' now and can not only support her career but give her control without drugs. Beast, however, had uncovered information that reveals that the 'former' Gladiator leaders might not be as 'former' as they thought... rushing to the arena Beast discovered Dazzler was using her talents to advertise for the Gladiators (this time wearing a skimpy native American outfit) and begged her to come back with him, warning her she's being used.

Not realizing she's been drugged again Beast became enraged when she told him she feels 'at home' here and that people like him, and the rest of the world. Just can't understand the message these people have or what they could do for her. Disgusted to the point of rage Beast grabbed her by the throat and mockingly drew 'warpaint' on her face with a tube of lipstick before storming out. Shouting that he loves her too much to watch her kill herself as he left. As Beast reached the exit he was by the strongest Gladiators and chased through the arena before being caught and doped with nearly a full crate of the drug - 'programmed' into nothing but a beast to match his appearance. Leading him into the ring against Dazzler, the Gladiators didn't realize that the 'surge' in power that Beast caused when he made Dazzler angry burnt out the last of the drugs in her system. So when she was ordered to kill Beast she simply uses her powers to keep him at bay until he managed to overcome the drugs himself.

Embracing each other the lovers refused to fight further. Leading the Gladiator's 'deposed' leadership to reveal himself and order their death... only for the man who'd pretended to depose him earlier to refuse. Beast and Dazzler, surrounded by gladiators, prepare to die just in time for the man who stopped their execution - revealed to be Max - to come running in and apologize to Dazzler as he struggles to help them fight off his fellow drug-drunk Gladiators. As the battle turns against them Max ordered Beast to grab Dazzler and run. Despite her protests Beast did just that - only stopping when he believed them to be safe. While the two are arguing about what they want from each other they are cornered and captured by Flynn (the deposed leader) and his cronies.

Awakening half-naked and strung-up by chains Beast and Dazzler confessed their love for each other - Beast admitting how unwilling he was to see her die and how he let his anger turn on her when he was really angry about what others were doing to her. Breaking up the 'tearful' reunion Flynn mocked the two 'mutant lovers' and told them how he's going to turn the Gladiators into an army and recapture Latveria - claiming to be the son of Doctor Doom. A fight ensues when Max (Rocker) Link and Poltergeist break in and set Beast and Dazzler free. Uniting the Gladiators against Flynn, the warriors finally corner Flynn who was almost killed by Link - only to be stopped by Dazzler who says that a 'friend' taught her they shouldn't use their powers to kill. Grinning at Beast as she says this Dazzler was injured when Flynn throws himself at her and tries to stab her - only to be soundly defeated when Dazzler uses her powers to knock him out.

Revealing himself in the bandstand Doctor Doom states that 'Flynn' has no more claim to Latveria than Reed Richards. Thanking Beast and Dazzler for 'dealing' with this 'upstart' Doom depared and the Gladiators - throwing off their armor and weapons - turned their backs on their 'leader' and leave him for a new life.

Later that night Beast and Dazzler - sitting alone - talk about how, while they love each other, the love was more an escape for both of them than an actual relationship. Beast further pointing out that now that Dazzlers career is on the rise again the last thing she needs is to be seen with one of the most controversial 'men' of the decade. Telling her that he'll always love her Beast says that he's willing to 'let her go' because he loves her enough to want her to follow her dream. Kissing her Beast smiles when she says that 'someday' she might just not let him 'release' her like that and leaves.

While the two remained friends, Beast seldom saw Dazzler after that - which can be understood as years of service with the Avengers (during which he also aided the X-Men against Dark Phoenix) followed that kept him busy. The Beast took it upon himself to reorganize another super-hero group, the Defenders, into a more formal combat organization. His X-Men cohorts Angel and Iceman served in the Defenders along with him, but the team collapsed after a climactic battle in which several other members seemingly perished.

After Professor Charles Xavier returned to Earth, following an extended period in outer space with the Starjammers, the Beast and his fellow X-Factor founders returned to the X-Men. For years Beast remained an active member of the X-Men as well as serving as the resident technological and medical genius at the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning. Hank became known to nearly every member of the super-hero public. He became a ‘mediator’ between the various incarnations of the brotherhood and the X-Men, an on-and-off member of the Defenders and the Avengers, one of the architects for the Baxter Building and one of the Cerebro designers. In a sense, he became the ‘good’ public face for mutant kind.

One of Beast's greatest challenges emerged with Stryfe's fatal techno-virus. Hank was already despondent, as he was turning thirty and questioned his life accomplishments. His frustrations became further compounded when Professor Xavier and Moira MacTaggart didn't ask for his assistance with the Legacy research, but it turned out Xavier was just giving him his privacy. Perusing through their data, he learned that the problem was more difficult than he had initially imagined. Hank always believed that, given time, he could solve any problem; the Legacy Virus had become his obsession. He went as far as making an unethical decision in giving Sinister information on the virus, since he had more resources and less morals to inhibit him.

A turning point came when Dark Beast finished some of the formulas, occasionally prying more information from Hank, whom he imprisoned and replaced for a while. The most critical step toward a solution, though, was when Dr. MacTaggart discovered a cure due to Mystique's irresponsible manipulation of a virus strand. This was still incomplete and it took Beast to design the cure. Based on Moira's notes, Beast concocted the anti-virus to much elation, but it soon was repaid with a heavy toll — Colossus had to sacrifice his life to release the remedy.

Despondent over the loss of a teammate, and blaming himself for being unable to complete the cure without costing Colossuses life, Hank briefly left the school with Storm and her X-Treme team in search of Destiny's diaries. After having his "latent genetic potential" jump-started by Sage (a process that nearly failed) he was critically injured and near death. To save him, when an exhausted Sage collapsed, Psylocke gave her life to give his genes the final mental ‘nudge’ needed to initiate the mutation he needed to survive and save their friends. After the attack left Psylocke dead, Beast clutched her prone form to his chest before being rendered unconscious and returned to the Institute.

With the loss of one of his dearest friends and the mutation he’d had to undergo to survive; Beast became very insecure, feeling that he was devolving into an animal. He was forced to end his relationship with Trish Tilby when she declared she was afraid of what would happen to her image if she was seen with him in public. After he discovered Cassandra Nova had taken over Xavier's body, Nova manipulated Beak into beating Beast into a deep coma. Hank eventually woke up… just in time for Jean Grey and Emma Frost to perform a psychic surgery and keep Xavier alive.

Feeling that he’d become superfluous and realizing that his own actions had cost the lives of Colossus and Psylocke he seriously considered taking the "cure" but decided against it after vigorous urging by fellow team member and long time humorous rival and friend Wolverine, because, not only would it dishonor the memory of his beloved friend after all she gave up to keep him alive. It would also send out a bad message to the mutants of the world whom (thanks to the press) Beast had become a role model for.

When Beast began work on the new Cerebra instillation to replace the aged and damaged Cerebro design he lost the time he’d had to devote to feeling depressed. With something his closest friends compared to relief; Beast buried himself in his work… so much so that he almost forgot the loss of Colossus and Psylocke. Even when Colossus was revived Beast still felt that it had been his fault that it had all happened… so when Psylocke’s original body and the body she’d died in was exhumed by the sisterhood. Many of the current and former X-Men were outraged and went into battle against them. When the sisterhood attempted to transfer Psylockes original mind into her reborn original body so as to use the Asian assassin as a slave; Psylocke was almost killed again save for the intervention of Beast and Wolverine which cost Betsy her original body – totally destroying it beyond any sort of reconstruction.

Fortunately though, they managed to stop the sisterhood in time to transfer Psylocke to her former asian body. While she was unconscious on the bio-bed in the medical bay many of the X-Men felt guilty for depriving Psylocke of any hope of returning to her original body – none more so than Beast. Believing he’d lost a dear friend because he hadn’t been strong enough or quick enough to help Wolverine or the others save Psylockes true body. Since then Beast has returned to work– only leaving Jean and Emma notes on how to help Betsy’s reborn muscles and body adjust to their newborn status and lack of training that she’d have to adjust and retrain before she’d be back to her original power level. Despite Dazzler's return to the X-Men (many of the team believing her to be there to try and get through the Hank) Beast still kept mostly to himself despite the attempts of Jean, Storm, Psylocke, Alison and even Professor X himself to try and get through the depressed Mutants mental walls.

All things considered Beast is a very dear friend to nearly every member of the X-Men. Many of them have known him since childhood and – thanks to his powers – he is physically of the same ‘age’ as all of them; though it wouldn’t matter if he were or not because of his bestial appearance. Among such friendships is his friendly rivalry with Wolverine – the two of them often attempting to out-drink or arm-wrestle the other into submission whenever their together. In fact, Beast only seems to drop his gentlemanly manners when he’s around Wolverine (Ororo and Jean commenting that Wovlerine is a bad influence on him) his relationship with Kurt is that of a mentor – often attempting, with the help of Wanda, to convince Kurt to stop using his image inducer in public. His relationship with Wanda Maximoff and (at one time) her father is that of a debater – often sitting down in the park and eating something while they discuss things ranging from the weather to soup.

Other than Kurt, Beast has remained the one X-Man Wanda has remained in contact with.

As he has done with Xavier, Magneto has severed nearly every tie with Beast. However, as Wanda has known Beast since she was twelve, Beast has remained as something of a role model and friend to Wanda. As for her twin, Pietro (though he’d never admit it around his father) has a mocking name and a blind hatred for every member of the X-Men… except for Beast. The relationship Beast has with Dazzler is more confusing than the others, they have been good friends since she joined the X-Men and, at once time, shared the relationship of a teacher/student as it was Beast who first taught her control. Even after they fell in love and he let her go to pursue her career they have remained friends, sharing a relationship of her teasing flirting and his dry humor. Some have said though, that it sometimes border on something more… though neither of THEM have said that.

As for Xavier and Cyclops and the other leading members of the X-Men; Beast is their peer and one of the few groups that afford him the respect and admiration he deserves. Jean and Storm have always been Jeanie and Ororo to him and will always remain so. Psylocke (who has flirted with nearly every member of the staff at least once) has often gone out of her way to defend Beast from his detractors and is the closest thing to a 'sister' he has. Working alongside Forge has given him a fondness for the Native American tech and together they are building the future of Cerebro itself; the Cerebra instillation which promises to achieve everything Cerebro once did so easily and more... All things considered Beast has MANY friends... yet none of them have been able to reach him in his latest bout of depression.

Beast, not seeing how he has begun pushing his friends away; has done little besides work on Cerebra, attend senate calls, and teach biology, shop and then go to bed at night... barely living as that is all he can bear to DO with the guilt he carries for costing Betsy her true body, the near death of Colossus and the fact that - despite all his good works - he still has yet to achieve the good for which he strives.

Roleplay Sample: Sighing as he walked down the boulevard Beast adjusted his glasses as he read the e-book projected by the palm-reader in his hand. It was a funny sight to see – this huge muscle-bound fur-covered mutant walking down the streets with his nose buried in a palm-reader; walking around people without even having to look up. Crossing streets with absolutely no harm inflicted on him – like he was perfectly aware of what was going on around him without even having to look up. Dodging past a bus Beast seemed perfectly at home. When a woman screamed about her son who was about to be run down by a car Beast, with his nose still buried in a book, flipped into the air. Caught the boy by his pants-belt with his foot and tossed him back onto the curb before jumping on top of the car, nose still in the book, jumped off. Caught himself on the light-pole with his unoccupied hand and slid to the ground.

Exhaling Beast put the palm-reader down, looked at his watch, and nodded, “Lunch, I think,” about then the woman came running up and started praising him while the boy just stared at him, “Quite alright my dear woman," looking at the boy he made a half-smile, “As for you my boy, you may want to attend to focusing on what you’re doing instead of wandering when your mother calls your name," nodding at them both Beast headed along the pavement for the restaurant he’d come to eat at when he’d taken the bus instead of his truck down here.

Reaching the open-air restaurant Beast sat down in the middle of the tables and waved his left hand, “Waiter? Waiter?" When a thin young woman spotted him Beast smiled at her, “Would you bring me your wine list?" he asked in a soft tone of voice, “And a list of your finest cheeses as well?" seeing the woman nod Beast returned to his book. When the lists were brought Beast looked up and raised an eyebrow at the panicked look on the woman’s face, “Is there a problem, my dear?" when all she managed to do was squeak as a skinny man with black hair… and a silenced pistol, ”One word out of you, mate, and I’ll splatter your furry blue brains all over this place,”

Watching as the man sat down opposite him Beast raised an eyebrow as he set down his palm-reader, “Indeed… and what do you plan to do to me, if I may ask?" as the man raised his pistol and shot it Beast didn’t even flinch as three bullets whizzed a few inches past his head and stuck into the wall. The man scowled as he fired off another two shots and flew past Beasts head, ”Please, sir, there’s no need-“ the man was obviously on edge as he spun around when her hand touched his shoulder – emptying a bullet into her arm. Then she screamed the man cocked the gun again, ”Shut up!” glancing at her as she clutched her bleeding arm Beast exhaled, “I’m a doctor… it would be bad for you if anyone heard her making this much noise. May I…" the man cocked his pistol again and pointed it at Beast, ”She… she made me – I didn’t want… you were supposed to… to… Just do it!”

Inclining his head in thanks Beast leaned down next to the woman and looked at the hole in her arm, “Don’t worry," he said, “You’ll be alright," holding up his thumb and forefinger Beast watched the two claws on those fingers shoot out, “I need to cut into your arm to get out the bullet, will you trust me?" the woman looked panicked, swallowed, and nodded, “Here we go," hearing her gasp and groan as his claws dug into the hole in search of the bullet, “Don’t worry my dear… you’ll be alright – there’s nothing-" suddenly he smiled and a clicking sound was heard as he found the bullet. Pulling the piece of lead out of her arm Beast dropped it to the floor, “It’s alright," he said as she cried through the pain, “Shh, it’s alright, just lie back here," pulling his coat off Beast made a pillow out of it and lay her head against it.

Turning to face the man Beast scowled, “There’s no reason for this, what do you want? If you plan on robbing the store then there is no purpose in-" the man glowered at him as he got to his feet and leveled his gun a few inches from Beasts head, ”I’m ‘ere to kill you mate, you and the rest of your kind – I’m an ‘itman,” Beast snorted, “You can’t be a very good one my man, not with an accent like that and pointing that gun at me in public – see that crowd beginning to gather?" the man swallowed as the police could be seen pushing the crowd back as they fenced in the area, “No," Beast said, “Now that's the bull explanation out of the way, what are you really doing here?"

The man swallowed as tears began to stream down his face, ”My little Nelly… she… she’s pregnant – I can’t afford the…” he swallowed and stopped though his fist remained shaking, ”The attention she needs… me own daughter – pregnant with me own grandchild and I can’t take care of her… the Friends of ‘Umanity… they said… they said they’d see she was looked after if I did this job for ‘em… I af… I af to do this or Nelly…” Beast swallowed, “Pregnant?" the man nodded, his gun shaking even worse now, ”Our first grandchildren… she… she’s… triplets you see and… she can’t deliver them without…”

Beast held out his left hand and slowly put it on the man’s shoulder, displaying a lot of confidence in his ability to contain this mess, “You’re a soldier?" he asked, the man looked confused, ”Yeah I… the war in Latveria –my draft group was called up and… how did you know?” Beast smiled softly, “That badge you wear on your jacket, the soldiers assigned to that mess call it the Latveria Debacle – they wear those to remember it," reaching into his waistcoat pocket Beast showed the man his watch with the same design cut into the gold the back of the case, “I was with the corp. of engineers – I was only twenty-three during that battle. We had to pull out when Doom unveiled his thermonuclear weapons emplacement… the agreement between Latveria and the U.N to keep out of his country in exchange for him never using those weapons,"

The man scowled, ”Bloody bastard… ‘oldin the ‘ole world at knife point all these years,” Beast smiled softly once more, “It wouldn’t do to have two veterans of the same war turning on each other, would it?" the man swallowed, ”But me Nelly…” Beast sighed, “I can help her… I’ve delivered more babies than the FOH has killed… please… give me the gun," biting his lip the man looked at the bleeding woman, then at beast… and handed him the weapon. Beast gave the man’s shoulder a squeeze, “Thank you, what is your name?" the man swallowed, ”Lytton… Gustav Lytton,” suddenly they were all encircled by a horde of police, ”Thank you senator, we’ll take it from here,” Beast held out the gun, “Go easy on him captain, he’s going to be a grandfather soon,"

Seeing Gustav smile at him sadly Beast waited until he was being led to the car before bending down next to the woman, “Come on, I’ll get you to the local hospital," the waitress swallowed, ”That gun…” Beast looked at her with a confused expression, “Pardon?" the woman swallowed again, ”That gun... it's a hand pistol, I watch TV sir. That kind of gun... only has six shots in it… he used them all, you didn't need-” Beast raised an eyebrow, “Really?" he asked with a light chuckle, “I’d never have guessed… and me! A trained soldier and everything... hmmm... that’s right, lean on my shoulder, come along,"
