Vincent circled the School from high above. I don’t see anyone… Is it rude to just crash down in someone’s driveway? Vincent continued to circle a little longer, worried he might make a bad first impression… Ill just do a really good landing, then I’ll look good instead! Widening his flight path he began to ascend, moving away from the house down the driveway, he turned. “ Here goes!” Vincent dived suddenly, racing towards the driveway like a plane to a runway.

When Vincent got close to the ground he coiled his wings up, spinning himself upright and dropped to the ground, his feet skidding through the gravel and stopping a good couple of meters from where he’d touched down. He held it for a couple of seconds, then dropped onto his backside, screaming in pain. *Whoosh!* With a mighty roar his wings erupted into flame, the black ashes from his feathers flew off with the win. Here we go… His blades starting to grow through, and all the scars of wounds he’d received in the past began to surface…Nightmare!

Evelyn had fallen asleep underneath a rosebush. How and why was a mystery... Tendrils of the thorny vine were tangled around her limbs, yet she was unscratched even when she moved in her sleep. Her short curly black hair had a few leaves and probably some dirt in it, and her pale impish face was slightly smudged with dirt. She was wearing long baggy brown shorts and a plain black shirt that was several sizes to large for her. She looked like a wild thing. Evvy woke to the sound of someone screaming. The girl tried to get up, and the vines tangled around her reluctantly let her go. She wandered sleepily towards the source of the sound, feeling somewhat worried. It had sounded like someone was in pain. Evvy stopped for a moment when she saw someone laying on the driveway, then ran over to see if he was badly hurt.

Vincent stretched his legs out in front of him, fanning his feet with his wings, that really hurt! He continued wafting his feet, then spotting someone coming towards him out the corner of his eye. Noooo! Not now! Vincent looked up at the girl coming towards him and smiled weakly, feeling himself getting embarrassed already. Not the best start! “Hey there!” He said as she got close to him, crossing his legs in an attempt to cover his bloody feet. He looked around at the house and grounds, “ Lovely day huh?” Keeping it cool…

"Heyla... it's nice enough," Evelyn replied vaguely, as she rubbed the side of her face sleepily. Whatever had happened, it wasn't that urgent.. she felt a little foolish for running over. Oh well. Blinking, she looked at her hand in interest. The tattoos... were moving around again. The little buds that had been 'growing' the day before had bloomed into tiny purple flowers with shiny silver centers. "That's an interesting change," she murmured to herself, then gave her head a shake. Tattooing her and Briar's hands hadn't been the brightest thing she had ever done, even though it had been done to hide the X tattoo the orphanage had branded them with. Evvy returned her unfocused attention to the young man sitting in the driveway. He had screamed... why? Feeling slightly nervous now that she was awake, she looked down at him. "I'm Evelyn Zenadia. Are you alright?"

“…I’m fine” Vincent said, slightly embarrassed, “ Just trying out a new landing…” he sighed and lifted his legs up towards her, revealing his bloody scratched up feet. “ Just a little sore.” Using his wings to help lift himself up he got to his feet. “ Nice to meet you, I’m Vincent Harding.” He held out his hand towards her. Do you shake hands with girls? Vincent looked around, not knowing where she’d appeared from. “ So you been here long?”

"Rough," Evvy said sympathetically, at the sight of the bloodied feet, before shaking his hand. Not a common thing among teenagers that she knew of - hardly being a social type - but whatever. Tilting her head back to meet his eyes, she realized how much shorter she was than he. Not surprising for her, since she was rather short, but it seemed that he was more than a foot taller than she was. In reply to his question, she offered, "I've been around long enough not to get lost. Though I'm still not used to living in a house... most of the time I camp out." Evelyn shrugged. That, and she had a slight case of claustrophobia. Staying inside all night made her feel like she was going to suffercate. Not to mention there were no plants in her room, it felt dead in there. "Are you a new student, or what?" she asked curiously after a few moments of silence.

Vincent nodded, “Just this minute landed” he said as he motioned towards the marks he’d made in the driveway. “ Cool tattoo!” he said excitedly, spotting the marks on her hand, “ much more original than mine.” Vincent looked down at his, “Kinda cliché having a bird…” He looked back up at the house, Its massive! I wonder where Ill be staying? “ sorry to be a pain… But is there a chance you could give me a quick guide through the layout of this place?” Vincent said weakly, hoping he wasn’t pushing his luck with his new acquaintance. This was the first person he’d made civilised conversation with in years, other than his parents. Vincent was pleased to her she didn’t like sleeping inside, “ you camp out here? Awesome! Back home I used to sleep out in the hay barn, you cant beat sleeping outside!” Vincent could feel his mood lifting greatly, sure she was a little unorthodox, but she seemed like someone Vincent would get along with.

Evvy glanced at her tattoo and said, "It was originally a normal tattoo, but I had used a plant-based dye... my affinity with plants kinda messed with it I guess." At his request for a tour, she pulled a slightly crumpled piece of paper out of one of her pockets. It was a map, and scribbled on it (slightly messy handwriting, but legible) was important places, such as the dorms, classrooms, teachers offices, and the cafeteria. "If you want I could give you a tour, but that might take a while. You can have this, I have another in my room. First thing I did when I realized that I was going to stay here, was get a map. Er, make one, I don't know if they have maps to give out or not... if they do its probably better than my one." She shrugged again. It wouldn't be the first time she showed someone around, though she wasn't particularly knowledgable about the place herself. "I'm not sure about the grounds though, they're pretty expansive and other then the immediate area around the Institute I'd get prolly get lost. Or think that I was lost even if I wasn't."

Vincent laughed a little, “ Don’t worry about the tour then, the map will be fine I’m sure… Thanks.” Despite it being crumpled Vincent folded it carefully and put it in his pocket, then pulled out his iron tablets and took one quickly. “ Just taking my meds… Don’t worry I’m not insane or anything, iron tablets.” He shook the bottle, then put the pills away. Suddenly with a small ping the blades on his feathers all dropped off, sticking into the ground in an even line, and with a sound like the creaking of wood his feathers grew through, “ That’s better,” the second his feathers started growing he could feel his feet healing, I haven’t got many pills left, he thought as he shook his bottle again in his pocket, “ I need to go buy a couple of things,” he said looking up at the sky, “ Its getting late I should probably go now…” He looked at Evvy and smiled, “ you want to come?”

It took Evelyn a few moments to realize what he meant. She shook her head. Not that she wouldn't love to fly.. if it wasn't for one little problem. She was afraid of heights. As in, her mind would go into complete panic mode.. for once she wished that wasn't so. The short girl was even paler than usual, as she looked up into the sky. Then she admitted, with a slight blush of embarrassment, "I have acrophobia - I'm absolutely terrified of heights... it would probably be best if I didn't." She made no mention of her messy, just climbed-out-of-a-bush appearance, because that didn't even figure into her thought process.

“ Your afraid of heights!” Vincent looked at her, stunned. Being someone who could fly ever since an early age heights were not a big deal. “ You sure? Maybe it would help you overcome your fear?” Vincent moved behind her quickly and put his arms around her, flapping his wings they began to rise into the air, he stopped a couple of feet above the ground. “ Is that so scary?” he said to her, “ I won’t go any higher if you don’t want me to.” He looked down at her as they hovered above the ground, praying she didn’t freak out.

Perhaps that wasn't the best thing to do with a person who just claimed to have a phobia of heights. They were only a few feet above ground... but terror was not enough to describe what Evelyn felt. She wasn't the type to scream, cry, or freak out when afraid. Somehow that made it worse. Barely able to breathe, let alone form a coherent thought or sentence, she was frozen with fear. Remembering against her will, being held by her ankles from a window, and then dangling from the window ledge, while Briar fought with the older kids that had been tormenting her, it had been all she could do to cling there until he could pull her up... well, that memory wasn't as buried as she would like it to be. It took a few moments to quell the panic welling up inside her enough to choke out the words, "Down... please." Her voice betrayed her fear, more than anything, even her tense-ness. Evvy's phobia of heights... was not something to dismiss lightly.

Vincent laughed a little, “ Ok, that didn’t go to well…” He gently lowered them to the ground, letting her go and walking around in front of her. Jesus Christ she’s so pale! I don’t think I should have done that… Vincent blushed a little, embarrassed and feeling horribly guilty. “ Sorry, when you confessed to a slight fear I though you mean a little nervous when you’re really high!” Vincent moved about on the spot uneasily, not sure quite how to calm her down, he moved towards her slowly and gave her a little hug, “ I’m sorry, Ill do all I can in the future to make sure your feet stay firmly on the ground.” I cant believe I did that… she tells you she’s scared of heights so you pick her up! You’re an Idiot! “ I, I better get to the store.” He said quietly, still embarrassed. “ See you around?” And with that he turned away from her, running down the drive and leaping into the air, his wings propelling him towards salem

Evelyn watched Vincent fly off, feeling almost numb mentally. I should go inside, she thought tiredly as she walked back through the garden. Not in the direction of the house. She wandered around silently for a while, directionless. Evvy felt a strange sense of calm, like the terror had washed everything away. It would come back eventually, it always did, and she'd be more herself again.

She sat down on a bench after a while, and just stared blankly at the grass beneath her feet. Maybe she could get over this fear. It was awful. He hadn't meant to scare her, that was clear enough. He only meant to help... how in the world could she get over it if she was so afraid? Was that the right way to go about it, trying to face it? Perhaps if she had time to ready herself... she shook her head. Later. She would think about this later.
