A small boy could be seen just inside the gates of the courtyard. He seemed out of it like there was something else on his mind. The mansion was magnificent. He had never seen an estate before so this young boy should be in awe. But he wasn't. Robert was standing right in front of a statue that, to him, seemed to hold a lot of significance. Lifting his hand he removed his black bowler to get a better look. This motion revealed that he had an extra set of ears, a pair of cat ears popping through his unruly dusty-brown hair. Somehow this statue radiated what he had been wondering since the first time he transformed. There was a place for those with special abilities to feel safe. His thoughts began to wander. Multiple questions, fears, and his own hesitation made him question the reason why he was here. That was simple; he was here because his sister made him. Not knowing what to do this small boy walked around the statue and stared straight at the front doors. Did he want to enter a world in which safety and happiness ruled? Where having some sort of non-human power meant that you were normal. No, he didn't but he couldn't go back to his old life. What life? Ever since his grandparents died he had no life. Not knowing whether he wanted to turn around or to knock upon the doors to a new life and home, he dropped to the ground. Between the statue and the front doors sat Robert, a catboy wondering what the future held. To accentuate this, his gray and black striped tail repeatedly hit against his thigh. |

A slender blond teenager was walking up the driveway after a rather long walk. Despite having walked farther than would regularly exhaust most people, he was still feeling rather energetic and not the bit out of breath. But he was hungry. He figured he ought to eat before anything else, so he was heading back to the Institute. He stopped suddenly, noticing a little boy sitting by the gates. He looked down at him, his hair was long and streaked with green - he got easily bored and found dyeing his hair amusing sometimes. A little catboy... he realized, noticing the ears and tail. The boy looked lost in thought. Kelrian looked away for a moment, then crouched down beside the boy. "Heya, I'm Kel, what's up?" he asked abruptly, his manner entirely friendly. It was a new kid, he was sure. Or a lucky little mutant that had randomly wandered to the gates of the school. In any case, Kelrian showed his most friendly, easy-going face. Never mind that it was his only face, as pretty as it might be. "Are you waiting for someone? Or something?" |

It's true he was lost in thought. Robert didn't even hear the footsteps of blonde kid. His mind was finally clearing. He was going to wait an hour more. If no one came to greet him, he would leave. Suddenly he heard the boy's introduction. He jumped a bit and knocked over his antique looking suitcase. Turning he stared straight at the guy. "I'm debating whether to leave or not," he remarked cutely. So this strangely tall man was named Kel, was he? A small smile formed on Robert's face. I wonder if it's pronounced the same as Superman's name. He loved comic books. But that wouldn't make him be nice all of a sudden. Focusing on the door he said, "I'd be happy if I found a reason to enter those doors. Right now I only have one." Yes, one and it wasn't good enough. Kel had a friendly look on his face. This made Robert relax a bit, maybe too much. "My name is Mittens." An inhuman screech, almost like a disgruntled meow, escaped his lips. He hadn't meant to tell anyone his sister's name for him. They would know eventually but for now he didn't want to be called that. "Robert, Robert Austin is my name." He said this in a slightly high pitched voice. What was he going to do as a light wind blew his black bowler toward the doors. Maybe that was sign, perhaps? |

"Nice to meet you, Robert," Kelrian replied straight-faced. If he hadn't realized how embarrassed the kid was at his slip of the tongue, he probably would have giggled. But as it was, he paid no attention to it. Mittens. Eh, that was cute. When the wind caught Mitten's hat and blew it towards the gates, Kel stood up abruptly, and caught it before it landed. As he handed it to Robert, and said cheerfully, "Well, I like it here, you might too..." he tried to think. "As for reasons to stay.. I couldn't say what yours would be.. but usually its for safety, for help with abilities and stuff, ..." he shrugged. "I'm not sure why I'm here, really, except for friends that won't freak out the moment they find out I'm not their ideal version of normal. It's not like I'm in any serious danger, if I get hurt I'll just heal up again, and I don't really need to control my powers. Although I'd like to stop my hair from growing so psychotically long." He sighed and grinned at the boy. "Before you decide on whether to stay or not, wanta get something to eat? I'm hungry." As if on cue, his stomache growled in complaint and Kelrian chuckled. |

It didn't matter what Kelrian thought. It was out and people would be calling him 'Mittens' by the day's end. Something that he was use to all ready. He just wanted to get back at his sister. On his feet, Robert was about to chase after his bowler but Kel got to it first. He took it without a thank-you and sat back down. Still holding it, he brought his knees to his chest trying to stay distant. This was just another group home full of kids who were unrelated. Sooner or later something was going to happen, something bad. His worries made Robert look smaller than he actully was. 'Safety' he had already thought of. So that's two reasons. Kelrian contiuned to talk. "Don't you know that you that you talk too much." He said not too rudely and still not friendly. He looked up just in time to hear the tall guy offer lunch. His cat ear's twiched at the growling stomach. "I'm not going to come with you just because you're hungry and would feel bad leaving a young..." He stopped as his own stomach growled. When was the last time he had eaten? It had been a few hours ago. Sighing he conceded. "Lunch sounds alright." |

Kelrian's friendly expression didn't change much, he appeared unfazed by the other boy's lack of friendliness. Much too used to being disliked -for various reasons, this disinterest didn't bother him too much. He was too girly, he was too strange, he had too much energy, he was too friendly, he talked too much... he knew he wasn't perfect, anything but. It still.. always kind of hurt when people rejected his attempts at friendship but never showed his hurt. It didn't matter. Wasn't going to change anything. I just offered to be nice, Kelrian thought with a mental sigh. Didn't mean anything by it. Why do people always have to read into things when there's nothing to be read? "People say that all the time," Kel replied with a careless shrug. His smile wasn't in place any more, but he kept himself as friendly as ever. Because it never really hurt... to try to be friends. Unless, of course, someone smashed your face in for being a 'pansy-assed freak'. Oh, yea, that was painful. "In that case, what would you like?" A flash of a smile, and he walked towards the gates, pausing when he reached them. |

Robert knew that his words had hurt Kelrian. He wasn't always this rude but he wasn't sure if he was going to stay. Making friends and them or you disappear, now that really hurt. Placing his hand on the ground Robert braced himself as he stood. Then he took his suitcase while watching Kel with slight anticipation. This guy was tall. Mouth agape, he stared at him taking in every last feature. Then the question of what he wanted to eat. That was easy, he wanted only one thing. Forgetting that he was trying to stay distant, Robert's face brightened as he replied, "Fish!" His ears perked and his gray and black striped tail swished back-in-forth with pleasure and hope. Suddenly he became aware at what he was doing. Robert stopped smiling. "I mean I would like to have a fish sandwich. Not tuna fish, just fish. Funny thing, I never liked fish until last week.” His eyes were staring at his bowler as he tapped it against his suitcase. Finally back into the mood he started in he followed Kelrian. The only thing that betrayed him was his still swishing tail. |

"If its a fish sandwich you want, a fish sandwich you shall have," Kelrian said, opening the gate for Robert. For a second his long hair got caught on it, and he decided that he was going to start cutting his hair. It'd have to be every morning, and it'd probably be shoulder length by nightfall, and back to normal by the time he woke up.. but perhaps he'd stand out less if he did. Just a little effort. As he finished untangling his hair from the annoying thing, his cell phone began ringing. I guess I should I should be ashamed / But I forget to be vain / Well I did the best I could I guess / But everything just bleeds... Well, not ringing. But yea. Close enough. He flipped it open, still holding the gate open, and asked, "Yea? What's the problem... oh..." His eyes went slightly wide, but otherwise he was expressionless. He couldn't help it. He felt numb. "Call me back when you know for sure." He was rather pale and shaky looking, and the only attempt at hiding his shock failed miserably. He sighed, "Sorry 'bout that..." |

"Thank you." Robert sighed. He was about to ask what type of fish this place had when Kelrian's hair got stuck in the gate. He tried so very hard not to laugh. It was funny but he still shouldn't make fun of someone who kept their hair long on purpose. A small giggle escaped his lips so he bit them. His ears twiched slightly at the ring tone of Kel's cell. At least it wasn't the annoying beeping that he had. He didn't like it at all, actually he had been wanting to change his but his sister was the one who knew technology. Robert started to ask if Kelrian how to change ring tones when Kel's face went completely pale. What's going on? Something bad happen? His curious thoughts went swirling around his head. Robert's small feet finally went throught the gates. Turning around to face Kelrian with concern, he wanted to ask one thing. "Is there anything that I can do to help?" This wasn't like himself now: a young boy keeping his distance. It was his oldself. At least a bit of it, the side that never wanted people to feel sad. |

"I don't know. I don't think anyone can," Kelrian gave the youth a weak smile, and let the gate close. "She's been gone fourteen years..." They found her body. She's really dead. Why am I not surprised? He shook his head. "I kind of liked to think that she was out there somewhere, but I was wrong." Even thinking that she abandoned us was better than thinking she was dead. It's not like I really remember her.. she was gone - dead - by the time I was three. But this is going to crush Mara... she never really got over it. She still rememberes what Ma looked like. Used to tell me stories 'bout her so I wouldn't forget completely. And father... he replaced her, and so quickly. It's like he knew she was gone for good. He sighed again. And his stomach growled. He looked at in disbelief. Hunger. Right. Although food did not appeal to him at the moment, he had to eat. Or he would probably starve with amount of running 'round he did today. Suddenly he looked at Robert, and said seriously, "Even if you don't stay here.. don't go off on your own. Wait until you find somewhere else before you leave.." please? She was a mutant. His father had never mentioned it, but now, he said she was dead, murdered, with her wings torn out and what was left of her body -even after fourteen years it was obviously mutilated. Because she was a mutant. |

Robert's tail stopped swishing. Kelrian had become serious. His words confused him. Who was this women? Where did she go? Possibly dead? Was it your mother? The last question touched home. His parents had died a long time ago. It was a car crash. He was only an infant and they were just pictures to him. Even his sister was too young to remember them, at least outside her nightmares. But his grandparents had died as well. They were the ones he wished were alive. Kelrian's growling stomach awkend him from his thoughts. Then his warning came. Don't leave alone. That's reason enough to stay. Robert finally found a reason to stay. However, he didn't want Kelrian to see him worried. Solenmly smiling, he gave news that might distract Kel. "There is one reason I'll stay and that is if the fish is good. If not I'm gone." He wasn't going to leave. He would stay and try to contact his sister. She too was a mutant and Kel's warning scared him. "Why did you have to leave?" Though knowing his question wouldn't reach her ears, he still had to ask her. Maybe the air would delevier the message. Looking back a Kelrian, "You my call me Mittens as wish for my sister's safety." A wish, a hope, a prayer for both his sister, Kelrian, and him. |

Kelrian took a deep breath to steady himself. He wasn't helping anyone by falling apart. "If that's the case, I'll make your fish myself," Kel told Robert. He had a knack for cooking, since he had usually ended up cooking when his father and stepmother were at work. All three of his sisters' cooking was awful, so it was either learn how to cook or face possible food poisoning. He began to walk towards the front doors. "Hmm... how does grilled salmon with dill sound? I'm pretty sure I have everything for that..." he trailed off trying to remember how to make it. Then he shrugged, "Time to pull out my cookbook. C'mon, I think it'd be best to use the kitchen in the dorms, less likely to get hassled for that." His sister's safety... ? He turned to Robert, and gave the boy a quick hug. Without thinking, maybe that might upset Robert. "I'll do whatever I can to help you and your sister," he decided. "If anything happened to one of my sisters I'd be devestated." Sure it was unlikely that he'd be allowed to do anything... but he never really paid much attention to rules. Especially when things more important caught his attention. And if they didn't like it here, they could stay at his room back home until they found somewhere they wanted to be. His father would welcome them with open arms.. hopefully his sisters wouldn't squeal over the cute little catboy but they were a lot more sensible than most girls their ages. |

He was still staring at his bowler. Exploring this place was the last thing he wanted to do. He had decided to stay but... It was still a group home. With downcast eyes he continued to follow Kelrian. Robert didn't know what to think. This tall man with the green streaks in his hair make fish good enough for him to stay. An awkward smile formed upon his features. Maybe he shouldn't of made that threat; Kelrian seemed unlikely to make a bowl of cereal let alone fish. But grilled salmon sounded good. Again he remained passive but his tail betrayed him again as it began swishing. Suddenly, out of no where, this odd guy gave him a hug. His cat ears shot back like a cat's when they are angry or mad. He wasn't either but, but why would a complete and total stranger give him a hug. In other words he was scandalized. The suitcase slipped from his hands, the bowler went flying, and Robert was pushing on Kelrian's shoulders to get away. His heart quickened. He was focused only on escape that not even a thought of the dropped suitcase came to mind. It might of landed on Kelrian's toe but he didn't care. Robert abruptly stopped fidgeting. Did he hear this guy correct? Was his offer to help genuine. Sadness filled the small catboy's eyes. "I don't believe you can help. She, she was going off on an errand and ended up on a... a plane to Toronto. She's a mutant as well." As he begin to speak his voice was cracking. By the time he mentioned the plane the first tear fell down his quivering cheek. The last words were barely audible as he broke down in full fledged tears. This wasn't like him. He never cried so where did these tears come from. |

Kel had an automatic response, when it came to crying, to want to comfort. Countless times he'd petted, hugged, and teased his sisters out of tears. But he wasn't sure how to comfort the kitten without upsetting him more than he already had. "Hey, its going to be alright..." Kel went down on one knee so he was on eye level with Robert. "I'm not sure what I can do to help yet, but I'll come up with something. I may not seem like the brightest goldfish, I know, so I guess that's not extremely reassuring." Kelrian was determined now. "I'll do whatever’s humanly -or mutantly- possible to help." He never worried about himself, being a Regen injuries never lasted, but others... he would jump in front of a bus to save someone else. Actually he did so once before. He needed to get some training, not for his powers but in fighting and survival skills so he wouldn't be dead weight and could actually help rather than floating around being useless and suchlike. It wasn't just for this.. he felt like he was suffocating. He just couldn't... stand it. The way people treated other people. It was sickening. And he just sat here in safety while others were in constant danger. When he didn’t even need safety! "In the meantime," he said after a few moments of silence, "I'm going to make us some salmon before the kitchenette is overrun with students." He didn't really mind that, it just made it difficult to cook and he didn't think that Mittens would like being surrounded by a lot of strangers at the moment. |

Yes he wanted comforting. He wanted to be cradled and to be told that everything was going to be alright even if it wasn't. Tears were still streaming down his face. Small hands were failing to wipe them away. This young boy was once again being filled with hopelessness. If it continued he surly would concede to it. As if an almighty whisper in gale storm, Kelrian's voice could be heard over his unrelenting sobs. 'Hey, it's going to be alright...' Was the only thing that could make his tears stop and they did. With one final sob and hiccup, Robert stared at Kelrian through blurry eyes. His offer to help was genuine. Actually so genuine that this catboy couldn't believe the his comparison with a goldfish. Goldfish, wonder if they are eatable. That one thought made him give a small, barely visible smile at Kelrian. "Thanks," was all he could mange as his red cheeks returned to their normal sun-tanned look. Rushing Robert gathered his things and stood in front of the strangely tall guy. His outburst had scared him but the promise of fresh, homemade, grilled fish was enough to chase those feelings away. "What's salmon taste like?" Was all this small catboy could say. Yes, he had fish before but not real fish. Silently he put his bowler on his head and followed Kelrian's lead. ((Sadly finished. Continued in Garlic and Dill Salmon.)) |
