Temperature manipulation/Life-force absorption/Fear projection
It was a sunny day at last or as sunny as you can get in mid-spring. The streets of North Salem were a bit quieter than usual. There was the occasional shopper or businessmen passing by an oddly placed woman. Her obsidian black hair blew in her face obscuring the black sunglasses that she wore. Despite the slight breeze, she was wearing what looked like a black tank and a pair of boot cut blue jeans. What adorned her feet was an unmistakable pair of black cowboy boots.

This woman truly didn’t belong here. A fleeting thought passed through the minds of those who went by her, a lost traveler on the way to New York City? No, she was expected to be there or at least she thought she was.

Lou had traveled all the way from Toronto with the hopes of finding a teaching position. She had received information that a school for special students may have a spot open for someone of her specialties, normal or otherwise. But she didn’t know where it was. The blonde traveling companion quite literally disappeared when their plane landed. This young girl didn’t give her name only the odd word in which she insisted to be called, ‘Want.’ Yeah, one might question why this woman would travel to America with an enigma. The answer: she didn’t have a choice. Lou had been followed since the emergence of her powers and the ‘men’ in her shadow, finally fed up with the chase, wished to capture her. In shorter terms: she needed a place to lay low and this school would be perfect.

A slight yawn escaped rather pale lips as the woman stretched. It was a somewhat long flight and the muffled meowing only confirmed this. “Elea we’re almost there,” Lou smiled at the cat carrier in her left hand. Inside was her only family, a white Persian cat. Lou’s other hand held a bag steady on her right shoulder. It was getting heavy, finally conceding to the weight she gently let it fall to the ground. This bag was faded and the straps were fraying but it would never be replaced. That was one of the only mementos left of the life Lou had lived as a child, a life she would have liked to forget.

Lou leaned her head against the stone-face of quaint bakery. The crumpled napkin with the name of the school and its address lay forgotten in the back pocket of her jeans. With a lot of luck she might find the place without getting lost but her chances were better staying put. Maybe someone who knew of the school would ask her if she was lost. Smiling at this thought, Lou shook her head. That would be total luck if someone did.

Would it surprise anyone that a certain feral mutant had decided to take a walk away from the mansion after the end of a rather interesting and intensive Danger Room session. He’d kept to the quieter parts of town, the bakery the young woman was leaning against a part of Salem that didn’t have so many people. Not that Logan cared who saw him, what they thought, or how they reacted to him. He did chuckle however, thinking of the many times he’d simply looked at someone and they’d gotten the message to give his rather intimidating form a wide birth.

Turning away from the counter, a nice hot beef pie with BBQ sauce poured all over it in his hand, Logan’s keen eyesight picked up on the form leaning against the bakery window pretty quickly. Had she been looking in she would have easily seen him raise an eyebrow, catching the scent of something animal on her person. ~Oh great,~ he thought, sniffing the air and differentiating the feline smell above that of the very delicious pie he‘d just taken the first bite out of. ~She’s got a cat there somewhere.~

Moving out of the bakery, a 500mL carton of coffee milk tucked into one of his jacket pockets, Logan continued to eat, leaning casually back against the other side of the bakery, tempted to sit in one of the seats provided but really, he just couldn’t be bothered. He wasn’t the type of guy to make small talk with just anyone either, even someone as cute as the woman standing close by. He did, however, pick up on the fact she seemed to be lost; how he could tell that just from looking at her something even he couldn’t explain at times.

He chose to remain quiet, if she truly was lost she’d make the effort to ask someone where she was and where her intended destination might be. After finishing the pie, with a couple minutes it was so yummy and he was just so hungry, Wolverine moved over to his motorbike parked by the curb. Again, he casually leaned back against it, taking great sips of his coffee milk, giving a welcoming smile the strange woman’s way. “Nice day for a stroll, ain’t it?” he finally spoke up, giving her the opening she may have needed.

What they hey, he was in a good mood today.

“Well Elea, I guess we’re going to have to find this place ourselves,” sighed the dark haired woman. Just then two elder women laden with shopping bags crossed in front of her. Plastered upon their faces was the distinctive –I can’t believe that woman is talking to her cat- look. This was too fun, Lou raised her free hand in acknowledgement of them with the classic teen –I’m not part of this world- look with the neutral face to go with it. It was only a matter of time before, and yes there it was. The women scowled at her and quickened their pace with their noses in the air. The corners of her pale lips lifted a bit. People were highly interesting creatures with very predictable reactions to things outside their comfort zone.

Whether she liked it or not watching people’s reactions was interesting. Lou wished to make those women mad and for them to move away from her quickly. She didn’t need to stand out already more than she was. Shifting weight on her right foot, she bent down to collect her bag. With eyes still focusing on the two women rounding the next corner, her ears picked up the sound of the bakery door opening. As usual, no luck.

Again Lou was leaning against the bakery but this time she watched a man, who had just exited, enjoy what looked to be some sort of pie. He too was leaning against the building. “Guess we have company,” she said. There was something odd about this man, like he was aware of more things than a normal person would. It was scary. With eyes still staring, this some what strange man walked to a motorbike.

When he too began to stare at her an all too normal feeling filled her veins. Was he one of them, part of the mysterious group of men who followed her and watched every one of her movements? A chuckle escaped Lou’s lips at this thought. Those men were clean shaven and wore rather expensive but somewhat scruffy clothes. This man couldn’t be one of them but that didn’t mean she’d let down her guard.

“Nice day for a stroll, eh. I wish I had the luxury of taking a stroll.” This man’s sudden smile and his comment only put her more on edge. Without even a smile or any sort of friendly expression Lou thought of one thing, her destination. “Since you’re the first person to acknowledge me with words, do you know of a somewhat private school in this area," she paused. Letting the cat cage drop at bit hardly, her left hand began to dig out the crumpled napkin in her back pocket. At last finding it she smoothed it out. An awkward and slightly embarrassed look came over her. “I had the name and address of it on this napkin but I accidentally smeared the writing."

On further observation, Logan perceived this young woman was cautious, yet also quite sure of herself. He had a funny feeling she too had something to hide, but didn’t everybody these days? He wasn’t all too surprised that she gave no sign of anything friendly after he spoke to her; didn’t even answer his question properly really. His eyes still on her he listened carefully to her words, them only affirming his suspicion that she was lost and looking for something.

“Since you’re the first person to acknowledge me with words, do you know of a somewhat private school in this area… I had the name and address of it on this napkin but I accidentally smeared the writing." leaning his head to the side, Logan couldn’t help but chuckle. “Well, Darlin yer talkin ter one of the teachers at one of tha special schools around here. It really depends which one yer lookin for,’ he pointed out, finding this rather ironic. He looked down at the cat in the basket, catching the little animal’s gaze. “Nice cat,” he added, feeling the hackles raise on the back of his neck. ~For huntin,~ he thought, although that was pretty harsh. Even he wouldn’t hurt someone else’s pet.

“How bout we be startin this over?” he suddenly asked. “Yer didn’t seem ter keen ter have someone talk ter yer when all I was doin was tryin ter be friendly ter a very pretty lookin woman. If it helps any my name is Logan, and I’ll help yer find this school, even if it doesn’t turn out ter be mine,” there, the offer was extended, whether she chose to partake of it was completely up to her.

A small, hopefully unnoticeable, look of confusion formed upon Lou's pale face. "Never thought that there would be more than one special school," her confusion turned into a small smile, "You're a teacher at one of those special schools." ~Wonder what kinda of school would let this type of man teach~ this thought was the real reason behind the smile.

Lou followed the man's gaze to the cat carrier at her feet. "Yeah, he's a nice cat. Too trusting though, if you gave him a scratch behind the ear he'll do anything for you." At that moment she was happy to be wearing sunglasses. They hid the jealous look forming in her dark gray eyes. When was the last time she was able to trust someone so blindly? Quickly turning back to Logan, "I think he be likin’ ya." Heck, she didn't know what cats thought but she was embarrassed about being jealous over a cat.

"You're right you know. I didn't want people to talk to me, I..." Lou stopped. How was she going to explain her enigma? Suddenly she collected her things and walked over to Logan's side of the sidewalk. "My blonde traveling companion had all the information of this school. Uh, yes I didn't quite know who this girl was and she disappeared when we landed." Alright, she was rambling but how was she going to describe the school without its name? As she placed her bag and the cat carrier down, she reluctantly came to a decision that could possibly invoke those who walked close by.

She approached Logan’s motorbike as if she was interested in it. “Well, Logan I’m Lou. I appreciate the help but I really forgot the name. I believe the girl said it was a school for gifted children. Gifted as in…” Lou was now about three feet away from him still staring intently at the bike. The air unexpectedly became cooler. Gradually she sucked the warmth from the air, stopping at about 40°F. As the air returned to normal temperature the ends of her lips curled up into a smile “Gifted as in with special abilities.” For once she didn't care if someone knew of her mutation as long as she got to that school soon.

"Never thought that there would be more than one special school… You're a teacher at one of those special schools," Logan noted the confused look and the entire emotion reflected in her voice when she repeated what he had already told her. Taking a cigar out of his pocket, he proceeded to light it, simply saying, “Yep,” as he took a long drag before taking it out of his mouth.

Wolverine’s eyes moved down to once again lock gazes with the cat. “Likin me,” he stated. “Well, that’s a first. Not many cats like me, must remind ‘em too much of a canine or somthin,” there, a very tiny hint of his mutation. Well, not really his mutation, just what it could be compared to if anything else.

"You're right you know. I didn't want people to talk to me, I..."

~No kiddin,~ he thought, raising an eyebrow at the mention of a ‘blonde companion’. Taking another drag of his cigar, he moved around, swinging his leg over the bike. He was thinking saying the name of Xavier’s might help to refresh her memory but she continued before the thought had even completely processed in his brain. “Well, Logan I’m Lou. I appreciate the help but I really forgot the name. I believe the girl said it was a school for gifted children. Gifted as in…” he felt the drop in temperature immediately, reminded of another of the students back at the school. Hell, if he was right in his new burgeoning assumption about this woman she‘d get along pretty well with the Iceman.

“Gifted as in with special abilities,” well, that put the icing on the cake so to speak, verifying it all. “Yer lucky yer can control it so precisely. Yer might want ter be a bit more careful next time,” it was a friendly warning. Taking the cigar from his mouth, he hid it between the two of them, no one around to see the pain register for a few seconds on his face as he placed the lit end directly on his palm. “Don’t usually do this so openly maself but it might go a long ways terwards earnin yer trust,” he pointed out, putting the cigar back in his mouth and waiting for a reaction to the fact the wound was now closing; healing; right before her eyes.

“By the way, tha name of the school I’m from, Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters, and ter say it’s for people with special abilities is an understatement,” he informed her, a genuine smile on his lips, the pain before long gone as his regenerative powers had taken over.

Lou knew it wasn't a smart idea to reveal herself as a mutant in public, especially in a place like North Salem. But the way she saw it she didn't have that much of a choice. "In that much sense I'm lucky aren't I, I mean to control my ability so precisely," she looked at Logan as if he was a student and she had just pointed out a rather terrible and wrong assumption. "It took me years to be able to control that much," her voice dropped to just above a whisper, "Actually that power is more of a defense mechanism. If I'm not threatened I can control it where- and whenever." At the sound of Logan's warning, she just turned and focused on the shops across the street. At least she wasn't using it freely in public anymore. In the back of her mind she clearly saw people jumping away from a cold shock when they bumped into her.

A motion from Lou's left side made her put all her attention back to the man on the bike. For a brief second she was about to hit the cigar out of Logan's hand. No normal person would purposely burn themselves but it was a vain attempt. With eyes widening, which could only be seen by the raising of eyebrows behind sunglasses, she inhaled with surprise. "Now that can be mighty useful," she said with slight amazement as the stranger's hand began to heal. His next statement was what made her step back.

"Showing me some type of kinship won't get you my trust. I tend to live by the philosophy of not trustin' anyone." With arms crossed in front of her, Lou gave a smile as if she hadn't stated her standard of living. "So that's the name. That girl owes me one, you know. She should have known that we were too much in a hurry for me to remember a name that long."

The smile faded as Lou removed her sunglasses. For a second her dark gray eyes appeared lifeless than gradually they began to shine again but this time with worry and maybe twinge of fear. She looked quickly at every alley and shadowy area as if expecting to see some sort of ghost. In this area she stood out too much. No more than a week ago they were knocking on her door in a matter of days after they lost her in New York City.

Suddenly Lou became aware of what she was doing and turned back to Logan. In attempt to hide her worry she smiled halfheartedly. She than slid her sunglasses on her head, taking the strands of stray hair falling into her eyes with them. "Sure is bright out, isn't it," the blue, cloudless sky seemed to be laughing at her. "You don't happen to have any water on ya," Lou asked Logan kindly. She needed to get out of there, her eyes only begged this.

Wolverine again raised an eyebrow, “Trust has gotta be earned, kid, an’ if yer can’t trust me enough ter take yer to the school then I’ll be leavin yer ter follow tha signs ter 1407 Graymalkin Lane,” he wasn’t about to waste time with someone who couldn’t even give him the luxury of some sort of thanks for trusting her enough with his own little secret. It may have sounded harsh, but people like that weren’t worth his time. He was Logan, and he’d been opening up a lot more since coming to Xavier’s, yet, sometimes, that still got him kicked so very hard in the back.

The Wolverine was about to kick his bike into high gear, only to stop the moment he began to not only see, but also sense her fear. Gawww, sometimes he really did wish the students and others back home hadn‘t made him into such a softy. “What yer runnin from Darlin‘?” he outright asked. ~Give me a bit o yer trust here,~ he thought. ~Showin yer that I’m a Regen ain‘t sometin I do lightly.~

"Sure is bright out, isn't it… You don't happen to have any water on ya," now she was being all kind. Man, this woman needed to decide how she wanted to treat him and fast, before the feral mutant lost all interest in dealing with someone whose, at least to him, mood changed with each thing he offered to do for her. Reaching around to open one of the back storage sections on his bike he pulled out a bottle of Mount Franklin water, handing it to her. “Here,” was all he said, staring at her, rather annoyed at the moment actually.

“Yer made up yer mind yet?” he suddenly asked. “I don’t have all day ter sit here an wait yer know.” If anything, Lou would easily be able to pick up on the fact her reaction to his attempt to show her who he was had clearly gotten under his skin. There’d be no more of that to just anyone anymore… didn’t matter how darn cute they were!

Lou's whole body flinched as Logan gave her what appeared to be the address of school. That was the last thing she wanted to do; find this place on her own possibly getting lost. Hey, at least it would be a lot better than the last time. But, as her eyes scanned the sky, the sun was almost at its zenith.

“What yer runnin from Darlin‘?” those words. ~What am I running from.~ Lou took a deep breath and than answered this man's question. "I'm not sure who they are, actually. They have been following me, stalking really, for the last six years," her right hand stared to massage her left forearm. What she was saying only one other knew besides herself, that other was her blonde enigma. "Since the emergence of my abilities. I just found out that... that," now her left hand clutched a gold heart shaped locket dangling around her neck, "That someone once dear to me betrayed me. That person told those men what I am." Her eyes began to look lifeless again, a new development that she didn't yet know.

Without picking up Logan's rather annoyed tone, Lou took the offered water. She began to rummage through her pockets. Finally she pulled out what appeared to be two small, white pills. Dropping them unceremoniously in her mouth she then took a drink of water and swallowed them. "Headache pills," she told Logan. "When the sun's high in the sky I tend to get head-” A giant awkward smile appeared on her pale lips. Great he knew the start of one of her weaknesses; she had to trust him now.

Suddenly Lou bent down to retrieve her things. After throwing her bag upon her right shoulder she held out the cat carrier with Elea in it to Logan. "If we be traveling by bike you better find away to secure him. I ain't be leaving him. He's my only family." For the first time in ages a genuine smile raced across her features. Her cat never been on a motorbike before and she was just dying for a reaction, either from Elea or Logan.

This woman was all over the place. One minute she was telling him she didn’t trust anyone, next minute she was spilling the goods about why she seemed so fidgety and nervous; why she’d been reluctant to talk to him in the first place. It wasn’t until she got to the part about someone close betraying her that he really understood the entire package that was Lou. "There, see, all yer needed ter say was that in the first place an I wouldn’a gotten so annoyed with yer entire reaction before,” he pointed out, giving her a crooked smile.

Headache pills? Interesting. The awkward smile that soon adorned her face spoke volumes to Logan. “Yeah, that’s a big giveaway. Now, yer either have ter trust me, or run off in that direction considerin I’ll be headin tha other way,” and he motioned behind him over his shoulder.

He watched her reach down for the cat basket and other possessions, smiling to himself. "If we be travelling by bike you better find away to secure him. I ain't be leaving him. He's my only family," now that was the type of smile the Wolverine preferred to see upon the face of those he was offering to help out. Taking the cat basket, he gave it some thought, balancing it between the front of his knees. “He’ll be right for tha trip. It’s not a long one after all,” he verified, patting the area behind him. “Now, park yer butt there an I’ll get yer ter the school yer lookin for,” he promised.

"You were annoyed? I swear I didn't even pick it up," Lou mused but a serious look form upon her face. "I want you, Logan, to understand that I just took you in to my confidence. For your sake I hope you don't ruin it." Not a threat or a warning, just her slight fear in words. Only one other knew of those men and that other found out by devious means. She was going to get it.

"I choose trustin' you, I don't wish to run," Lou stated as she turned to look where Logan was pointing. An odd feeling began to fill her being. It felt as if she could sincerely trust the man on the bike. At least for now she smiled back to her companion.

She watched closely as he placed the carrier between his knees. A disappointed sigh escaped Lou's lips, "I thought you would complain at least a bit." Yeah, disappointment but it wasn't the end of the world. She shrugged and drew the sunglasses back over her eyes. Taking the pre-offered seat, she clutched the sides of Logan's stomach. Motorbike wasn't her favorite way to travel but you couldn't tell with the grateful smile and the whispered word of thanks. ~Onward to a new life.~
