It was a bit of a tradition for the Dacoras children to go camping for their birthdays. It started out of necessity, since each one came into their shapeshifting powers on their fifth birthdays and it was best for a little one to learn how to be a good dragon outside and away from from people and houses and breakable objects. So that was why Talyndal and Valyn Dacoras, ages twenty one and almost-five, were out in the woods in the back of the Institute.

The delicate, pale, little boy was watching his older sister set up a tent quietly, sitting on a log. Where the log came from is a mystery, and shall remain so. Probably. In any case, Val watched with a small smile, as Tal struggled a little with untangling the poles. How they got tangled... well, it mostly had to do with a bored four year old trying to set up the tent while his sister wasn't paying attention.

He was going to be a dragon. A real, living, breatheing, flying, fire-spitting dragon. Like his big sister. He couldn't wait. His sis said that he'd be smaller than she was for a while. Probably a long while. He didn't think so. He'd be as big as a house! "I'll help?" he asked his sister quietly, with the same small smile that he wore since they left the school.

"No. No 'help' from you, Valyn," Talyndal said without looking up. "I almost got it untangled, please do not 'help' me anymore. You 'helped' enough." He chuckled quietly, and his sister smiled.

The night after being brought to a place that held such promise, yet couldn’t very well be his home… or could it? Remy had separated himself from those he had met solely for the purpose of exploring the Xavier Institute alone, and in ways only he was familiar with. He’d found the attic of the main building to be a favourite place of his. Were he to stay he would ask for permission to build a room up there; making an area for himself to inhabit for the time being.

Now, he was in the forest, walking around the shore of Breakstone Lake, wondering how such a large body of water so close to a polluted city like New York could be so absolutely beautiful. Since the mid morning weather was warm enough, he’d stripped down to his pants, wading in, enjoying the coolness of the water, and the freeness floating on its surface made him feel. He’d actually fallen asleep for a small amount of time, somewhere in the back of his mind still alert enough to keep him afloat so he didn’t find himself coughing and spluttering as he went under.

Resurfacing once again, spending the better part of a couple hours in the water, Remy heard the rustling of nearby inhabitants of the school, and the melodious laugh of a female person. ~Come now, Cajun,~ he admonished himself. ~Yo’ve been alone all night, and for de better half o de mornin. It be time ta be showin yaself again.~ Pushing up out of the water, the sun gleaming off his wet and naked chest, Remy reached for his clothes, then opted not to worry about them until his pants were at least dry to the point where they weren’t dripping wet anymore.

Naked from the waste up, Gambit made his way into the forest, grinning to himself. This Xavier person certainly had picked the perfect background setting for his school. Soon spotting the owner of the laugh, and another much smaller male form nearby her, the Cajun leaned casually against a tree, observing the two. He watched as the young child tangled up all the poles, and the older woman proceeded to tackle the task of fixing them up once again.

"I'll help?"

"No. No 'help' from you, Valyn… I almost got it untangled, please do not 'help' me anymore. You 'helped' enough,”
another chuckle joined the little boy’s, Remy allowing his presence to be known by agreeing with the humour of the entire situation. “De little homme may no’ be welcome ta help but wha’ bou’ me?” Gambit asked, already stepping away from the tree, a glint in his eyes.

“De little homme may no’ be welcome ta help but wha’ bou’ me?”

Tal nearly jumped out of her skin at the sound of a unfamiliar voice, male at that. Which was just silly since she was at the Institute, whoever it was, he was probably just a student. She blamed her startlement on the isolation years.

"If you can untangle this vile mess, be my guest," Talyn said, pushing a few silver strands behind an ear before looking up. Yup, a new face.. but she wasn't so sure that he was a student. Perhaps a teacher, or maybe a random mutant like her? She really didn't think that she was in fact an x-men. Even though she kinda was, and as a dragon 'shifter she could definately hold her own, she basically came so she didn't have to take care of a baby dragon on her own. That would have been a nightmare.

In any case, he -whoever he was- had offered to help and he better not have been joking because she was getting frustrated with trying to unknot and detangle and suchlike while her little brother watched on far too innocently. "I'm Talyndal, and this beastly child is Valyn," she said, sticking her tongue out at her brother who replied in like, then batted his silver lashes at her and grinned impishly. Really, they were too much alike. They were even dressed alike, he in a smaller and darker version of her camping outfit, yet another one of her handmade creations. Nothing really noticable, just loose fitting and comfortable. She rolled her eyes, and glared at the tangle of poles.

Bored with antagonizing his sister by staring at her innocently, Val nibbled on the edge of his sleeve and turned his attention to a snail that had managed to join him on the log. Wondering if he could eat it - it looked slimy. Ooo that might be good... or not? He considered it at length, finally picking it up.

((Sorry for the lateness...))

"If you can untangle this vile mess, be my guest," Remy looked from her to the tangled poles and back again, not hesitating to move forward, grab a section and begin working them free of each other. Kind of reminded him of the many times he’d had to help the younger members of the Thieves Guilde detangle themselves from each other after a sparring match had turned into a full blown fight.

"I'm Talyndal, and this beastly child is Valyn," as she introduced herself, Remy suddenly wished he’d put his shirt back on, the end of one of the polls scratching him pretty badly. Wincing, he just nodded, glancing down at the beads of blood already coagulating on his chest. ~Oui, yo be offerin ta help an dat be wha yo be gettin for it,~ he inwardly chuckled to himself. “It be mah pleasure ta meet yo, Petit,” Gambit began, stepping forward and taking her right hand in his, ever so charmingly kissing it.

Of course, he didn’t have any idea if his charm power was working or not, which made it most difficult to tell if someone liked him because of him, or because his powers were subtly telling them to. “De name’s Gambit, Cheri. Or Remy, wha’e’er yo be preferrin’,” he soon added, four poles already neatly sitting next to each other beside those Valyn had already untangled.

Red-on-black eyes saw the movement of tiny hands picking up something out of the corner of his eyes. He’d been about to say hello to Valyn as well, but stopped short when he saw the snail in the kids hand. “Cher, I no’ be too worried as he be a enfant an all, but yo be wantin him ta eat dat ting, cos it be lookin ta me like dat be on his mind?”

Talyn was rather flustered, and didn't know quite how to react. After all, few guys 'round WNY acted like that. At least not when she was in high school, Tali hardly saw ... anyone... after Valyn was born. She could hardly believe that he just kissed her hand..

However she was immediately distracted by the snail that her litte brother was about to pop into his mouth. "Val, drop it," she said in a firm voice, not betraying the queasines she felt at the thought of him eating the slimy thing. And what if it made him sick, if he was allergic to snails or whatever that thing was dripping with goo? She couldn't take him to the hospital, he'd be five soon and it'd be a disaster if he transformed in a hospital...

The little boy sighed and dropped it in the grass, hopefully somewhere it wouldn't be stepped on later. His big sister worried about him too much, but sometimes he was glad that she did. If she didn't, who would? "I'm a dragon," he told Gambit solemnly. "Or at least, I will be." In most cases, that kind of comment made from a kid could be ignored as make-believe. But at the Institute? Perhaps not. He kicked at the moss at his feet, and looked up at Gambit. His eyes widened, noticing something his sister had not. "You're bleeding!" he said in surprise, and ran to a small pile of supplies, digging out the first aid kit.

Sometimes Remy wished he didn’t have the uncanny ability to read body language so well, although, the fact Talyn was clearly flustered by his actions brought a smirk to his face. He almost always had that affect on women, and some men too… he shuddered, not intending to go there EVER, anytime soon. He noted how quick her little brother dropped the snail at her behest, and wondered what it would be like if he was still close to his adopted brothers back in New Orleans, or, what if he had blood relatives out there somewhere?

Nostalgia was a fun emotion, and the Cajun found himself lost in it for a few moments. He audibly sighed; the concept that he could have siblings was just too hurtful to think about. They could have walked past him in the street and he’d never even know, let alone ever meet them someday!

"I'm a dragon… Or at least, I will be," Talyndal's thoughts had been right, if this was anywhere other than Xavier’s he may have found that statement just the figment of a little boy’s imagination. However, with the obvious and not so obvious mutations he’d seen lately… “An why yo be so solemn abou’ it, Mon’ami? Dat be soundin like a fun power, oui?”

"You're bleeding!" Val's sudden exclamation brought a smile to his face. “Non need ta be worryin’ so much, Enfant,” he advised. “It no’ be anytin too deep.”

"Flying is fun," Valyn said thoughtfully, from experience of dragon riding, "but I'll have to learn how to control my fire, 'n not to hurt people when I'm draconic, 'n stuff." He was smiling though, he was just naturally quiet and thoughtful. While he was hyper and silly at times, he wasn't much like other children.. which wasn't quite surprising considering he was raised by his sister who happened to be a dragon, that his mother was dead, and his father in an asylum.

“Non need ta be worryin’ so much, Enfant... It no’ be anytin too deep.” Val shrugged, realizing that was probably true. But still.. "Well, it might get infected or something if you don't put something on it," he said, looking through the first aid kit. Bandages, check, antiseptics, check, ...

Being a dragon was fun? Well... yes. Talyndal never really thought about it though, her entire family had been draconic... but the only true feeling of freedom was in the sky. Perhaps not exactly fun, but a great feeling all the same. She blinked suddenly when she noticed Valyn messing around in the first aid kit. He shouldn't do that, should he? Talyn thought about it, while watching to make sure he didn't do anything dangerous or messy.. which he wasn't.

Valyn‘s flying comment putting a grin on his face, Remy just nodded at the little boy‘s enthusiasm. He was pretty sure his sister would help him out wherever it was needed, so there was no need to worry about learning fire control. "Well, it might get infected or something if you don't put something on it," smiling wide, rather chuffed that he even cared enough to make sure, Remy put down the polls in his hand and sat down on the nearest boulder so it would be easier for Val to get to his wound.

Red-on-black eyes caught Talyndal’s gaze, “Yo should be proud o dis little ting. Yo be teachin him well, Cheri,” he commended. He didn’t know their mother was gone, and their father incapacitated in a way that probably broke the young woman’s heart. So, therefore, he didn’t know she had been the sole teacher of the young boy for a long time now; had he, that commendation would have continued, meaning something much, much more.

Watching Val move in to check his wound, Gambit found himself suddenly realising he didn’t want to be on his own anymore; he didn’t want to go to bed alone (or with a young woman he’d picked up in a bar); he didn’t want his life to mean pretty much nothing. Now, thanks to a little ‘stalker’ by the name of Alix, he had the chance to be a part of something more. Perhaps he would take up that chance; give it a go; and hope to all anything the curators of this place would welcome him. After all, he had abilities unique to him, and not just his powers either.

"I am proud of him," Talyndal replied simply and truthfully, looking into his eyes for a moment - the soft brown of her eyes was perhaps the only 'normal' thing about her - before returning her gaze to Valyn. Her younger brother was a wonderful little boy, and her life. It had been difficult to take care of him on her own before coming to the Xavier Institute, but it could've been worse. She didn't mind taking care of him at all because, despite the difficulties, with him she wasn't alone. She watched with an affectionate smile as her little brother played the role of doctor. He really was too cute.

"All better!" Val said brightly, closing the lid to the first aid kit, and smiling at his sister. She was proud of him? For what? He gave her a puzzled but happy look before putting the kit down near the rest of their supplies and looking to the tent. Or, rather, all the little thingies that were supposed to go together to make the tent. It wasn't night yet, but it'd be a good idea to have everything ready so they didn't have to scramble to finish before the light was gone. And they hadn't collected any branches yet, either. He wanted s'mores before he went to sleep...

In a sudden switch of mental topics, Val thought, I'm going to be five! He started to hum quietly, surprisingly for a kid his age it sounded alright. He wasn't sure exactly when he was born, it was somewhere around midnight... so when he 'shifted first would be a surprise. Hopefully one that would wake him up, so he could have fun with it immediately...

"All better!" Gambit grinned down at the young man, having rather just enjoyed the soft brown eyes of Talyndal’s looking into his. Yes, he was a charmer, but he respected a beautiful woman inside and out when he met one, and she was of those. “Ah, yo be doin a good job, petit Enfant,” he answered, touching the gauze pad. “I be tankin yo f’r carin so much,” he added, getting up and picking up the mess he’d put down to allow Val to play doctor on him.

“We bes’ be gettin dis organised. Yo no’ be wantin ta be puttin dis up when it be dark in dese woods, e’en wit keen eyesight.” It suddenly occurred to him that he wasn’t sure what Talyndal’s power was… was she a dragon Shapeshifter too? It made sense, considering the two were siblings. Kneeling down, he finally undid the last of the tangled poles, laying them side by side and looking around for the essential bits needed to put everything all together.

Making a start, he smiled to himself. This was kind of fun. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d been camping, even if it was only on the Institute grounds. “I be helpin yo ter get dis up, den I bes be leavin yo ta it, oui?” he asked.

"You're welcome." Valyn grinned back at Gambit, and began to pick up scattered twigs and such that could be used as tinder later, putting it in a litle pile near the log he'd been sitting on earlier. The kid was a little firebug, luckily with enough sense to keep it to the campfires... in that way he was much like his sister. It really was a good thing that Dacoras were immune to the harmful affects of fire, even as children. Especially as children.

"Right," the silver haired girl agreed. Not that she was uncomfortable in a dark forest, but it simply made sense to get things done while there was still more than enough light to do so.

“I be helpin yo ter get dis up, den I bes be leavin yo ta it, oui?”

Talyndal inclined her head towards Gambit, "Yes, thanks." She really hadn't thought... well, at all. "Are you staying at the Institute too? I haven't seen.." She blinked as she noticed what her little brother was collecting, distracted from her line of thought. "Um... could you watch him for a moment while I get a few branches?" Tali didn't want to impose, but Val couldn't very well go off on his own to do it, she couldn't leave him alone, and it might be difficult to keep an eye on him while gathering firewood. "If you don't mind, that is? He's pretty good."

Remy was already working on getting the tent pegs in position, wondering if he should just go ahead and do the entire pitching of the tent as well. Her words interrupted a train of thought he’d fallen into almost as soon as he’d asked her if they wanted him to depart once all was done. "Yes, thanks… Are you staying at the Institute too? I haven't seen.." red-on-black eyes looked around, observing her. “No’ permanently just yet, Petit. I still be decidin’,” he informed her.

"Um... could you watch him for a moment while I get a few branches? If you don't mind, that is? He's pretty good," well, really, it was the least he could do after the young boy had so carefully fixed up the wound on his chest. “Oui, Cher, I be watchin him,” he simply answered, grinning to himself. She’d pretty much just answered his thoughts about whether to pitch the tent himself… if she was going off to do something, he’d have it done before she was finished.

It occurred to him that he needed to get something to eat. Guess that was where he’d be heading after his rather helpful interaction here. “Yo be waitin for yo sister bfore yo be goin ahead an lightin dat,” Remy warned Valyn.

"Thanks," Talyn said, patting her little brother on his head with the firm order to "Be good" and went off into the forest.. which was getting rather dark. Er. Good thing she had good nightvision. She sighed and started to look for branches rather hurridly.

Val smiled up at Gambit, "I can't light fires yet. Maybe tomorrow." His sister never really needed to carry firestarter as she could literally breathe fire. Thus Valyn never had a chance to attempt to light anything on his own. He blinked at the tent as Remy set it up rather faster than he and his sister would have managed. Usually it collapsed a few times despite their practice in setting up tents.

Gambit hissed, sliding the hammer down the side of his hand sending a swirl of intense pain flowing up his arm. “Wonderful,” he whispered, giving the tent peg a rather uncalled for extra wack, letting out a bit of frustrated anger in the process. It was the last tent peg; the last part to hitching up his new acquaintances’ shelter for the night. Trust it to be where he hurt himself during the venture, yet again.

"I can't light fires yet. Maybe tomorrow,” Remy was quite relieved with that bit of information. Nothing like a little kid pyromaniac. Stopping flames from spreading through the forest was not one of his power fortes. For that, he’d have to get that flame manipulator guy he’d heard about, but had yet to meet. “Den dis ‘ere Cajun be hopin yo be gainin dat power soon, an control o it at de same time,” he pointedly said, red-on-black eyes watching as his sister returned.

“Cher, dat be mah offer o assistance done. I be leavin’ de two o yo to it, oui?” it wasn’t really a question. Remy had other things to do; other places to explore; and an empty stomach to fill with food.
