There's Something About Working Out at 5AM...; [CLOSED]

The gymnasium was completely deserted, not a surprising fact considering that it was just a little after five in the morning on a Sunday. Mina was probably the only one crazy enough to put herself through a workout at such a hellish time. Truthfully she'd been at it for at least an hour, and was just now starting to wind down.

The early morning sunlight filtered in through the high windows set about 12 feet up the gymnasium's walls, giving everything a sort of golden glow. Everything seemed to have a sort of hushed stillness to it.

Mina paced back and forth for a few moments over the padded floor of the gym, brushing a few strands of hair away from her face. It was evident from the fine sheen of sweat on her skin that she'd been pushing herself hard, starting with a bit of cardio and weights and then moving on to a brisk run around the indoor track.

Who needs coffee when you've got calisthenics?

She stretched her arms up over her head, arching her back slightly before settling herself into a classic Tai-chi stance, exhaling slowly before beginning the slow, deliberate movements of the ancient martial art. It had been a part of her workout routine ever since she'd had a workout routine and she recommended it to any of her students that were looking to improve their balance and concentration.

For a few minutes she let her mind wander, breathing deeply and evenly as she let her body move effortlessly. She mentally prepared herself for the day, knowing she would have her hands full later with all the normal hustle and bustle that went on daily at the Institute.

Perhaps it was wrong, perhaps it was okay, perhaps it was setting a bad example for the younger generation in the school, perhaps Logan really didn’t care, for he couldn’t help but watch the young woman on the monitor screen in the security room. She may have been the headmistress of the school, but, compared to him, she was still only a young woman. And a good friend too, Logan having wondered in the past, had she not been married, could there have been anything more. Quite possibly, for her nature was opposite to his; her ability to be his sounding board something not many had the privilege of being, nor handling, for that matter.

Hearing the next shift open the door behind him, Logan merely nodded at his fellow Faculty member, gathering up his jacket and moving out of the security room. Unable to get the image of Mina out of his head he decided giving her a visit and possibly working out with her wasn’t actually a bad idea. Sitting on his butt monitoring security all night had kind of made him a little antsy; too much energy stored up within.

Walking in, and placing his things down on a nearby bench, Logan paused, watching Mina for a further few minutes. Fluid and graceful movements, perfect, in his mind. He would lay down his own life for anyone in this mansion, but to say she was one of the few he’d both die and kill for in a heartbeat was to say the least. Not many people chose to understand the man behind the gruff exterior. Most either stayed away, or waited for him to give them the time of day. Not Mina, no, she’d been one of the first to approach him when he’d first come here; one of his first ever friends, aside from Chuck and very soon after, her husband too.

He silently moved over to one of the four bench presses, adding a bit more weight then lying down. He counted them off out loud, in ways of announcing his arrival to the young woman. “1... 2... 3... 4... 5... 6... 7... 8... 9... 10...” holding the weight up above him he grinned over towards the headmistress. “Mina, Darlin’,” he called. “Would yer mind helpin’ an ol’ man out?” Of course, she would know he didn’t need any help at all, it was just an excuse to have someone help him… namely her.

Mina's eyes had been closed as she let her body move naturally with the motions of tai-chi; after practicing it for so long it was almost like a habit to let herself just 'go with the flow', so to speak. She was so absorbed in her workout that she didn't hear Logan as he entered the gym and dropped his belongings on one of the benches lining the wall.

It wasn't until Logan started counting aloud that she realized she was no longer alone and her eyes popped open. Her motions didn't falter, however, as she turned her head just enough to see him. For a moment she grinned to herself; Logan was probably the only other person at the Institute crazy enough to work out at this time of day.

As he called her name she arched a brow, finishing her routine with a good stretch, her arms up over her head. Smirking slightly, she made her way over towards him, tugging the hem of her tank top down and not bothering to point out that she knew he didn't really need any help. He could probably bench press her over his head if he wanted to, after all.

"Yeah, no problem," she agreed, moving to stand at the head of the bench, lightly resting her hands beneath the bar he was holding above his head, ready to spot him if need be. "Just thought you'd get some reps in after your shift, hmm?" she questioned lightly, giving him a smile.

Logan was easily her closest friend since Jonathan had died, and not only that, he was also an indispensable member of the team. He was always one of the first she went to when she needed advice, and he was the only one she trusted to look out for the school if she was ever unable to.

"Just thought you'd get some reps in after your shift, hmm?" Logan gave her a lopsided grin, oh so tempted to admit to her why he was really here. Ah, what the hell… “Nah, Darlin’ been watchin yer on tha screen for some time. Couldn’t help but come join yer once my duty was over,” even as he said this he was lifting the weight bar, counting further in his head, without breaking a sweat. “Can’t help but notice how well tha workouts are beginnin ter make yer look,” he winked up at her, passing the bar over to her capable hands and sitting up.

Taking the towel he’d placed close by he wiped his face, even though he really didn’t need to. Regarding Mina for a little bit, he wondered if she’d ever gotten the feeling from him that he’d wanted more; that he‘d had to hold back on many occasion from openly admitting he had feelings for her. He wasn’t one for showing emotions he knew could never be properly understood or carried through with, so, unless she was highly intuitive, like most women were, she wouldn’t have a clue, and he’d keep it that way for as long as possible, lest she were to admit something of her own to him.

Standing up, and admonishing himself within his mind, Logan remembered it had only been two years since her husband had died; such thoughts really weren’t appropriate, yet, he couldn’t help it. She was a beautiful woman, both in looks and on the inside. There weren’t many of them out there anymore, specially with the X-Gene; bit hard to be truly kind in a world where the majority despised and hated you.

Sitting down on another machine, reaching for and gripping the bars, Wolverine proceeded to lift the weights, now working his upper arms quite vigorously. “Got any plans for tha day, Mina?” he asked, catching her gaze. “Aside from workin on my bike, and maybe helpin some of tha more keener kids through tha recent obstacle course I set up, I’m free,” and that was a very big hint. “Wanna do somethin with an ol’ man?” he asked, chuckling slightly. Over 100 years old, and he still only felt like he was in his late thirties. Now that was a pretty cool mutation.

To say that Logan's comment caught her off guard was an understatement. When you're 30 years old raising a 4 year old daughter and running a school full of teenagers, the last thing you expect to hear is someone saying you look good. Maybe, "Oh, you look tired," or, "When's the last time you had a break?" Certainly not something to the effect of "you look good".

She smiled, fighting not to react like some little schoolgirl and blush like crazy. "Logan, have you been spying on me?" she teased lightly with a shake of her finger in his direction. She might've been mockingly scolding him somewhat, but there was no denying by the expression on her face that she was flattered.

Taking the bar she lifted it back into its place, a few pieces of her hair falling into her eyes as she glanced down briefly. Jonathan had passed away two years ago and while she tried to tell herself that she had let him go, she knew deep in her heart that she hadn't. She had just buried herself in her work, all the while knowing that her husband wouldn't want her to live the rest of her life alone.

And now here was Logan. They had always been close friends, perhaps even more so after Jonathan's passing. He may not seem like the comforting type, but that was exactly what he had been, sitting with her when she just needed some company, sometimes even taking care of Meghan when she needed a break.

As he moved to another machine Mina took a seat on the bench he had previously been occupying, one leg on either side of it. She looked to him as he spoke again, arching a brow and grinning slightly. Oh, she knew a hint when she heard one. "Not really," she said with a small shrug. "Sunday is pretty much my off day, assuming of course nothing gets blown up," she added with a laugh, brushing her hair away from her face as he met his gaze, thinking for a few moments on his last question.

It was time she started living for herself, and not in the past.

"What do you have in mind?" she asked, watching him with her vivid blue eyes, a small smile on her full lips.

"Logan, have you been spying on me?" He grinned at her. “Yep,” he freely admitted, chuckling somewhat, and openly looking her up and down. “Yer one of my closest friends, had ter make sure yer didn’t over do it or somethin’.” Ok, so that was a major lie… more like, “Yer cute, I like yer, an spyin on yer, well I can’t exactly help it,” but he’d never say that out loud.

"Not really," she said with a small shrug. "Sunday is pretty much my off day, assuming of course nothing gets blown up," Logan laughed. “And it bein this place, that is a very large possibility,” he admitted, frowning a little. It would be good for the kids who didn’t have great control over their powers to leave off even using them unless they were in the Danger Room. For the ones who just loved to cause trouble, well, they knew who would be dishing out the majority of the punishment should they ever get caught, and with a teacher like the Wolverine… scent trails gave them away every time.

"What do you have in mind?" catching those blue eyes, the much older man in spite of his young looks genuinely smiled at her. “Coffee for a start,” he offered. “Maybe head ter tha zoo and see the new additions ter tha wolf pack.” As one of his closest friends, Mina would know the affinity Logan had with the lupine species. Many mistook them for canines, yet, they held a scientific name all of their own… at least to Logan they did.

“’Parrently tha bitch had three pups, not somethin that happens often, an bein in captivity they should all actually live long enough ter grow inter adulthood,” he pointed out, feeling warmth flow through his entire body. If she let him, he could go on and on for hours; detailed facts about the wolf pack at the City zoo alone.

She pursed her lips slightly, giving him a brief look that clearly stated, "I don't believe you," but let it go, grinning slightly at him. "Good to know you're watching my back," she murmured, a small smirk on her lips.

“And it bein this place, that is a very large possibility.” She let out a short bark of laughter, nodding her head emphatically. "No kidding. Sometimes I wonder how this whole building hasn't bloody caught on fire by now," she agreed with a small shake of her head. Her British heritage came out a bit in that sentence; her accent was light, almost lyrical, but definitely noticeable when she threw a curse word into her vocabulary (which happened very rarely).

There was something in her words, something in the way she glanced to the floor in thought that revealed that maybe she wasn't as sure about herself as she let on. Maybe, just maybe, she mentally questioned her ability to do this job. Professor Xavier certainly had faith in her, but still...his were some pretty big shoes to fill, and as much as she said otherwise she was still afraid that she wouldn't live up to his expectations, that she would fail where he would've triumphed. That she would lead these students blindly into a battle they couldn't win.

His words broke her out of her thoughts and she looked up to him, meeting his gaze and smiling as he mentioned the zoo, and the wolf pack. The idea that a man like Logan, who seemed so gruff on the outside, could care so deeply and have such an affinity for an animal was, well, to be completely honest...kinda cute.

"Sounds like a plan to me," she agreed, smilling brightly. It would be a welcome break to spend a day away from the Institute, wandering around the zoo. And spending that time with Logan was just an added bonus. "I've got some things to take care of after breakfast, but afterwards I'm free. So we can meet up around, let's say, noon?"

Logan knew that look all too well. Women had a knack of being able to tell when one wasn’t telling the entire truth, and Mina was no exception. Stopping what he was doing, he grinned. “C’mon Darlin’, I can’t tell yer what’s on my mind all tha time now can I?’ he said, a light to his eyes, often only there when he was in the presence of his closest friends… Mina and Pyro, to name the two he cared about the most.

"Sounds like a plan to me… I've got some things to take care of after breakfast, but afterwards I'm free. So we can meet up around, let's say, noon?" Wolverine just nodded, “Yeah, sounds good. Gives me some time ter do a bit more work on my bike before we go,” he looked at her. “Which, come ter think of it, if that’s tha transport we’ll be usin I better get to it now,” he explained, getting up. Gathering up his things he walked past Mina, planting a gentle kiss on her cheek, “See yer soon, Darlin’.”

He walked out of the gymnasium with a grin on his face. Didn’t matter if nothing more ever happened between him and Mina, it was the fact he had, a few years ago, been able to honestly say he had people he could count on; close friends; family even. So much of his life had been wasted, at least the parts he could remember, and the bits and pieces of his life before Stryker had taken him did hold remnants of a life he had enjoyed… even when he’d been wild; that was still so much a part of him, and if he didn’t let loose deep within the forest around the mansion sometimes, he’d drive himself nuts within the confines of the mansion walls.
