Continued from The Past Haunts the Present Mind.

Logan laughed. “A word of warnin, don’t fall asleep in tha Danger Room, specially with me in control of the program,” he advised, listening even as he was walking towards the door again. “And who wouldn’t be excited by the fact I have adamantium metal fused ter my entire skeleton. I haven’t met anyone yet that hasn’t been pretty amazed by it, til I tell em the stuff could kill me in a heartbeat if it wasn’t for tha healin factors of my X-Gene,” he gave Dia a lopsided grin. “But, for someone as close to metal as you are, I am sure yer’ve already figured that one out. It’s a poisonous substance after all.”

He raised an eyebrow at her firm correction of what she preferred to be called. Chuckling, Logan simply said, “Yer might have ter get used to it, Dia,” he told her. “I have a bad habit of callin all yer younger ones kids. I’m over 100 years old, even thought I don’t look it. So, yer all very young in my eyes.” Leading her down to the first floor and the nearest exit outside, the Wolverine waited at the door for her to catch up, his senses picking up on any and all the scents currently mingling in the back yard.

“Yer wanna see where de ol’ man lives?” he asked, grinning at Dia, clearly having a go at himself. “Yer seen the boathouse yet?” he motioned for her to follow. He’d done the boathouse up years ago, and it had been his place of dwelling ever since, much preferring to sleep away from the mainstay of his ‘pack’. It didn’t mean he was any less attentive to their needs however. He always kept one ear open to trouble, and an eye closely monitoring the security system monitors he’d set up a year or so ago within his home. What better way to keep an eye on everything than to outfit the boathouse with everything he needed to do so… and more?

"Yeah but because of your healing abilities you have not suffered from it's poison." For Dia, she just figured that since her mutation wrapped it's little pinkie around the metal injected into her that the metal's only affect was to taint her outer appearance and powers. Both of them were fortunate.

"We all have our weaknesses and for some keeping those weaknesses a secret is easier said than done." Though for herself not too many people figured out that salt and vinegar could do damage to her. But if they thought hard enough then yeah, maybe someone could figure out her main weakness.

"Yeah I know but perhaps if I remind you just to call me Dia I can just maybe break you of that habit." Her voice had a slight hint of a question to it. To break someone of a habit was not something that was accomplished easily or quickly. "But don't worry, if you call me kid again I'm not going to be offended. I just prefer to be called Dia."

While she followed him down the first floor and out the nearest exit she couldn't help but wonder something. Listening to his questions she nodded to the first and shook her head to the second. She wanted to see where he lived out of pure curiosity but hadn't seen the boathouse yet. Well, not up close anyways. Because of her curiosity and because he motioned for her to follow him Dia did just so.

As she followed being sure not to trail too far behind she asked, "do you have any kids?" Being a hundred years old it wouldn't be surprising if he did. But to see those kids have kids and die eventually...she wouldn't be surprised if he didn't have any kids of his own.

"Do you have any kids?" that question honestly stopped him completely in his tracks, the usually stoic and impassive Wolverine suddenly looking as if he was longing for something he believed he could never have. He’d been intimate with many women in his time, had even wanted to start a family with at least two of them, but his past… he shook his head… his past had always gotten in the way. He knew he’d been with someone special before he was taken by Stryker’s men, yet, he couldn’t remember her face or her name, just feelings, a sense of being held in the arms of someone that loved him for who, and all he was.

“Nah, Dia,” he answered, shaking his head more noticeably this time. “I’ve always been careful not ta leave any of tha woman I’ve been with pregnant. I may be a loner, and prefer ter be facin this world on my own, but if there had been a kid, I would have stayed with her,” he explained, that maybe sounding highly unlike the Wolverine. Yet, it was the truth. Never would he have left behind a child without its father. To him, blood was a part of his pack more than anything else in this world.

Reaching the steps of the boathouse, he paused, waiting for Dia to catch up before ascending them and typing in the code that would open his habitat of choice. It hadn’t always been as large as it was now, neither had the paintwork been as pristine looking. It’d taken Logan a long time to build on to the original building; to paint it, and to reorganise and set up the inside as something suitable for habitation. “Take a look around, Dia,” he said, grinning at her. Yes, he’d noted that she preferred to be called by her name, so, from now on, he’d try his best to remember that.

"You're a good man then." Unfortunately there were those out there who would leave a woman pregnant. Though some honestly had no clue of the pregnancy there were those that did know and it still didn't matter. How thankful she was to find out that Wolverine wasn't like that.

Catching up to him she looked around. Gazing at the outside alone was breath taking. The paint job was as near perfect as perfect could be. It amazed her. A lot of cruel people would say that men would be no where without women. Those people didn't know guys like Wolverine.

Biting her lip her eyes scanned the area and caught site of the water that was very near to her now. The path that laid before her had no traces of the salty waters that made her a little nervous. The salty waters that would be the death of her if she fell in. Which made her think, what was the use in knowing how to swim if she couldn't save herself if say she was out in the ocean on a boat? Oh well. She could still at least have fun in a pool. Chlorine didn't have salt and isn't a salt.

The main plan was to go inside, if she was offered to, very quickly look around then go back out. Yeah. That would work. That way her nerves wouldn't erupt and cause the underlined nervousness of the potential watery grave to show.

"You're a good man then," her words again caused Logan to pause, this time feeling an intense swell of pride. Not the type that made one get a swelled head, just that sense of, “Yeah, yer right.” And, if any of the ladies he’d been with in his time were to contact him, and actually admit to him that he did indeed have a child out there, he wouldn’t hesitate to take up his side of the responsibility. Thing was, that was highly unlikely… Logan was, and always would be, a very careful man, specially when another life was involved.

Coming out of his reverie, as he turned away from his fridge, bottle of beer in his hand, the Wolverine suddenly got the sense that something was wrong with Dia. Looking her over, he wondered if he should inquire of her concerns, and remind her that someone with a heightened sense of smell could pick up on even the smallest of changes in ones demeanour. Taking a swig of the beer, he offered her a bottle of coke. “Yer know Dia,” he started, “If you want ter talk about whatever it is that is suddenly worrying yer I’m all ears, yet again.”

If he knew it was a fear of salt water, he would have reassured her that the boathouse was extremely safe, the floorboards just like those within the mansion; there was no chance she would even touch the water, lest she go out to the actual boathouse mooring.

Shaking her head she refused the drink. "Thanks but I'm not too found of caffeine. The occasional once-in-a-blue-moon fix maybe. Depends on my mood and if the type of coffee is tempting enough." But other than that Dia avoided caffeine almost entirely.

Sighing she knew she couldn't contain that part of her for very long. She was, in fact, in the presence of a mutant who had heightened senses. He was bound to notice things that normal people might not. "It's just that being on a large body of natural water makes me a little....nervous." The ashen female knew that she had to just convince her mind that she was fine. Closing her eyes her mind repeated to itself "You're fine. You're safe." Meanwhile a voice was saying that perhaps it would be better to leave that way she wouldn't have to convince herself she was safe.

Shrugging casually, Logan turned back around, reopened the fridge, placed the coke back into it, and produced a bottle of Fanta. “That do?’ he asked, quirking a brow at her. Thing about getting to know someone, there would always be things he’d offer her, do, or say that she wouldn’t like, or wouldn’t be happy with. All part and parcel of that whole ‘making new friends’ thing.

"It's just that being on a large body of natural water makes me a little....nervous,” now Logan understood. The moment she linked her powers with drowning, he totally and completely understood where she was coming from. “Don’t worry, Dia,” he assured her. “If someone like me, whose adamantium laced skeleton would sooner see him sink than swim, is safe in this boathouse; makin it his home even; than yer really have nothin ter worry about.” He caught her gaze, “Although, if yer want to go back onter solid ground then just say the word.”

He leaned back against the fridge, waiting for her yay or nay to that offer. No point makin the place feel more homely by stoking up the fireplace or turning on the radio til he was sure they would be stayin inside for a bit.

Dia had seen the commercials for the brand named Fanta but had never had one. Taking the bottle she nodded, "thanks." Turning the bottle to where she could see the label she began to wonder if drinking caffeine would be better than this stuff. So much sugar. Sometimes sickening sweet drinks also didn't go well with her but she'd go ahead and drink it.

Dia realized the truth behind what he was saying. "You want to know something interesting?" She asked as she looked at him, her brows curled inward. "You have more in common with me than anyone I've met." Her mind listed the things they had in common. 1) They both were experimented on, 2) they both had metal inside of their bodies, and 3) they could both drown in salt water. Though the way they could drown was different. Which brought up another question, "Logan..would you drown in a pool if it was deep enough?" If he could sink in a lake or ocean, then that would mean he could also sink in a pool.

He watched her study the drink, deciding if she was going to turn that one down she could go to the fridge and pick out the one she wanted herself next time. "You want to know something interesting? You have more in common with me than anyone I've met." Logan just smirked, “Funny that, hey kid,” he agreed, taking another gulp of his beer. He walked over to the CD player, putting on something she may not have expected from him, Queen’s Greatest Hits I. He couldn’t help himself, the bands’ music was good.

"Logan… would you drown in a pool if it was deep enough?" he turned, looking at her. “Yeah Dia,” he said. “I’d drown in any body of water where I couldn’t touch tha ground. Ssshhh now, don’t tell anyone,” he advised, chuckling to himself. “It ain’t like it isn’t pretty obvious… adamantium is a heavy metal, my entire skeleton is fused with it, so…” he let his words trail off, motioning in the general direction of the lake.

“Make yerself comfortable, kid,” he said, grinning inwardly at the realisation he’d called her kid twice in the span of barely two minutes. Oh well, she did say she’d put up with it.

About the only Queen hit she knew was that one that was played in Wayne's World. Wasn't that a song done by them? She hoped it wasn't "We are the Champions." If she heard that song one more time, she was going to puke.

"Oh right." Boy did she feel dumb. Of course to make things worse she popped open her mouth, "I just drown and die if it's salt water." Oomph... maybe it was better to not speak at all. Twisting off the cap of the Fanta in her hand she occupied her mouth with her drink.

Perhaps she could come up with a different subject, but what? Well she was planning on a trip to visit her family. Though that trip was more of an eventual occurrence it may do her some good to get it done and over with. To tell the truth the more she thought about doing it the more nervous it made her, thus the reason why she had yet to go. But maybe, just maybe, if she just made the trip then she'd be alright. Sure, she might be haunted by what happens but she'd get over that. Not visiting her family would cause a great amount of guilt that would never leave her alone.

It was settled then. "Hey Logan," she started out, "I plan on making a trip to my parents place. But you see I'm nervous as to what's going to happen. If I was to run into any trouble I'm not sure if I could deal with it. So...I was wonderin'...would you come?" This wasn't a desperate girl asking a guy to come along. It was a nervous wreck asking for some backup and who better than a tough guy like Wolverine?

"I just drown and die if it's salt water," Logan quirked a brow. “Morbid much,” he stated, actually quite serious. Yeah, she drowned in water but did she have to focus on it so much. He had the sudden urge to help get rid of that fear, at least enough that she could enjoy an outing on the lake in a boat one day. It’d help him too, even though he’d already gotten over the intensity of his own fear.

He watched her, ears perking as she began to speak yet again. It wasn‘t until she got to the question, "So...I was wonderin'...would you come?" that he reacted. “Me?” he asked, a little shocked. “Yer want me ter accompany you…” well, that was a change for the better perhaps. Seemed this particular young woman wasn’t perturbed by his outward gruff exterior. “I guess,” he started. “Yer sure yer family’d would be happy ter have me along? It might work against yer bein allowed ter come back ter this place,” he warned, grinning.

Indeed, seeing him walk in behind their daughter might very well freak them out to no end. Most who didn’t know him took one look and decided Wolverine was just too plain scary to deal with; stuff trying to get to know him first.

"Don't worry, if anything bad starts to erupt all I have to do is find my mother and explain the situation. Once she finds out your just a friend trying to help me she'll understand and she'll make the guys behave themselves." She smiled. With a laugh she added, "even if they don't really want to." Her eyes rolled sideways. Older brothers could be so protective.

"Look you don't have to come. I just wanted some back up in case upon finding out I'm a mutant my family goes and calls the cops on me." She'd need a quick get away and didn't have a driver's license though she did know how to drive. If anyone understood the inner workings of cars it was her, at least when it came to the metallic parts of an automobile.

Sighing she looked to the ground, "I need to see my mother Logan. Even if it's just long enough to say goodbye. She's the only one that would accept me as is. I just know she would. She's a good person. One of the most beautiful women you could ever know both inside and out."

Logan chuckled. “Sounds ter me like yer Mom has a good head on her shoulders. Those brothers of yours don’t stand a chance…” and he wasn’t just talking about getting around their mother either. No, if they tried anything he’d only have to growl and they would probably go running with their figurative tails between their legs. "Look you don't have to come. I just wanted some back up in case upon finding out I'm a mutant my family goes and calls the cops on me." Leaning his head to the side, Wolverine just had to ask, “Can’t they already tell, by, yer know, tha colour of your hair, skin and fingernails?”

"I need to see my mother Logan. Even if it's just long enough to say goodbye. She's the only one that would accept me as is. I just know she would. She's a good person. One of the most beautiful women you could ever know both inside and out," Logan sensed the change in the young woman’s mood long before the outward sign of her face falling could be seen. Seems she was as worried to all anything about whether her family was going to accept her. Did he really want to go through what Iceman had when he’d told his parent about his mutation; but then, back then Pyro was still a bit of rouge in more ways than one.

He’d apologised to everyone, including Bobby’s parents for that, who were now accepting of their son, even if his younger brother still wasn’t.

Crossing the small distance between them, and placing a hand on her shoulder comfortingly, he said, “I’ll come, Dia. Jus’ warn yer brothers ter be careful round me,” he added, with a wink.

“Can’t they already tell, by, yer know, tha colour of your hair, skin and fingernails?” Dia pressed her lips together. "Yeah..they would. That is..if they knew I was a mutant." Yeah, it sounded as if she was going in circles but she was going to explain that. "They haven't seen me since I was thirteen. That's when I changed. Worst part is I didn't change in front of them, I changed..." Dia sighed figuring she might as well spit it out, "in a lab." So the part about the nightmare now was coming back into focus. As for her family and accepting her, that made more sense as well.

There, she explained it. No use in going into further detail until she felt ready. Yeah the professor knew but now that he was gone Dia knew that she'd have to tell someone. She figured she might tell Mina, seeing how she's the one in charge now.

"If I see them, I'll warn them." There was just one last part she was leaving out. "But I was hoping that you could..you know..stay in the background in a sense. Be there but..don't.." Okay first she asked him to come and now she was telling him to back off? "I know I sound confusing but it's for my family. Once I've established some ground with them then I'll introduce you but I fear trying to introduce you before that won't be so easy."

"They haven't seen me since I was thirteen. That's when I changed. Worst part is I didn't change in front of them, I changed... in a lab," eyes narrowed a little as they looked at the young woman again. Exactly how many things would Dia have in common with Logan before the end to them getting to know each other was finally reached? “A lab,” he repeated. “Sounds familiar.”

"If I see them, I'll warn them… But I was hoping that you could…you know…stay in the background in a sense. Be there but…don't.." Wolverine raised an eyebrow. Come but not be seen. Well, she really was asking the right person for that job. Stealth was one of his most famous of skilful attributes. "I know I sound confusing but it's for my family. Once I've established some ground with them then I'll introduce you but I fear trying to introduce you before that won't be so easy."

Logan laughed, “Yer think,” he simply stated, chuckling. “Yeah, no problem, Dia. I’ll be there but not.” He suddenly felt like a prince in shining adamantium armour, ‘cept his was on the inside and fused, instead of on the outside and simply worn.
