Shen preferred to meditate inside when at all possible. The outdoors presented to many opportunities to be disturbed. However, Shen could not sit inside today. He needed to feel the wind on his skin again, he needed to feel sunlight that was not filtered through glass. He had spent more than enough time on the inside, denied of these sensations. He needed the air for the moment. He needed to remember what it felt like to breathe.

He sat in the shade of an old tree in the garden. He had assumed the lotus position almost as soon as he had sat. His body was completely still. He sat motionless, not even inhaling as it was not necessary. Shen let himself acknowledge the sensory world. He had come to this place to see and feel it. He saw only in the visual spectrum of light, an act of concentration and stimulus discrimination. It was one of the few areas of his power that he had a good control of, the ability to seperate the spectrums of energy. Now was not the time to think of that though.

Shen turned his mind inwards. The first thing he did was focus on the spectrum itself. Slowly, he managed to ignore all the wavelenghts. He began with visual light, than he moved onto the higher frequencies of energy. They were easy to remove as there were not many high frequency waves in this place. Then, he worked down, beginning with infrared. Gently he pushed himself into the darkness, let himself be consumed by it. This was the closest thing to sleep that he had, the darkness.

He sat in the darkness. The only sensation that was left to him was the sensation of touch. He felt the clothing on his skin and the earth beneath him. Shen used all of his focus to deaden the tactile perceptions that he was aware of. If removing his awareness of low frequency energy waves was difficult, than the deadening of tactile perception was near impossible. Shen paid it no mind though. He had all the time in the universe, he might as well use some of it.

The outside was harsh, that was no question. But inside Xaviers walls there was a small sanctuary that Arjun was sure all the students felt. Being a teenager was hard enough without having to worry about killing people with a touch, or sprouting horns and wings. There were regular troubles to worry about such as acne and the ever fleeing love or school in general.

He walked through the garden at a slow pace. Days like these brought teenagers out of the school and into the fresh air and dazzling sunlight, and Arjun too was not immune. He flip-and-flipped down the path in his tan sandals and camo shorts. A tight Violent Femmes teeshirt adorned his upper body, topped off with his new short haircut. Comfortable was his feeling today. Absolutely comfortable in his surroundings and self.

Coming around a corner on the winding path, Arjun saw the boy meditating in a yoga-like postition. He didn't know what he was doing, if it was in fact meditation or just a comfortable way to sit. Say hello and disturb him? Walk on by? Sit and wait for him to be done? The sun was hitting his body enough for him to feel its warmth directly, and with a small smile he decided to sit a few feet away from the meditating boy. He silently formed the suns light into images that floated just above his hands. The images changed form quikly and without effort. Sometimes it was a small butterfly and the next it was a cloud.

Shen was not as deep into the darkness as he would have liked to believe. He doubted that he would ever be able to completely give into the darkness, the state of sleep that he had been deprived of. He missed the blessed hours when he could remember nothing. People took the dreamless sleep for granted. He would have given anything not to have this constant sort of awareness. As it was, Shen became aware of the new presence because of a shift in the gravitational fields.

He let his awareness of visual light return to him, although he made no sign that he was out of his meditative state. He let his body relax slightly in the presence of the other, seeing how much the other observed.

Shen then noticed the images that the young man was making around his hands. For a brief moment, Shen felt envy. He wanted to have that sort of peace with his power, that sort of comfort with it. However, the sensation of envy passed just as quickly as it had come. Shen had learned long ago how to supress his emotions and how to conceal his reactions. These skills would have made him a good card player; however, Shen saw no point in playing cards.

Shen had to smirk, at least inwardly. The boy infront of him was some sort of illusionist. To Shen, it was a reminder of a basic principle of his own belief. Shen believed firmly that all reality was an illusion, so to an extent, the boy in front of him was a manipulator of reality. "Do you wish me to leave?" Shen asked of the boy infront of him. Shen knew well that some people valued their privacy and would not wish to be disturbed. He respected the desire to be alone. If the boy wished it, Shen would be more than happy to leave. He was less prepared if the boy did not want him to leave though. The years that he had spent in the prison camp had done nothing for his limited social skills.

Arjun had started to make the images bigger and more intricate. The light was prime today, and strong enoug that Arjun felt confident that if he was to be placed agaisn't an enemy he could have easily overcome said enemy with his illusion powers. That was not always the case though, especially when your power totally relied on light.

Half startled half prepared, the boy looked up towards the speaking individual. "OH, no no. You don't need to leave, after all I came and took over your area. If you want, I'll leave. Though, its always nice to meet new people..." He said carefully and confidently.

It seemed that no one was interested in becoming friends around here, everyone had their own cliques or liked to be alone. None of that was him, it just wasn't. Things change sometimes, especially when you have the sun on your side.

Shen was not very good at reading people. It was a skill that he had not refined. He had not had the social interaction necessary to understand the subtle transitions between emotional states, especially given his own distance from his emotions. Even to someone like Shen though, the pleasure on the other's face was obvious. The other boy seemed to be enjoying himself greatly. Shen was both happy for and envied the boy for a split second. He was happy that the boy had found a form of peace, and he envied that peace. Again, the emotions were supressed before Shen had a chance to register the fact that they had occured at all.

"OH, no no. You don't need to leave, after all I came and took over your area. If you want, I'll leave. Though, its always nice to meet new people..."

"Then I will stay. I am Shen," Shen introduced himself. Even though he did not get out of his lotus position, Shen bowed from his waist. The line of his spine was perfect as he bowed and as he straightened himself. Shen's desires to leave were not strong enough to compel him to do so. Even if they were, Shen would have remained any way. The key to Buddhism was to be totally free of your desires, to be the master of them. Shen was still aware of his desires, they had not ceased, but he had managed to keep them in check most of the time.

It was not that Shen was not unkind, however he was puzzled. Who would willingly befriend him? The helmet alone should have served as a warning. He silently prayed that the young man infront of him would not ask him about either his past or his power. Those two subjects were not ones that Shen was comfortable discusing, even with the few that had managed to befriend the Chan Buddhist.

Arjun had come across many different kinds of students and teachers in the mansion and on the grounds and in classes. But he had yet to meet someone who seemed so dignified and religious? He inwardly shook his head, religous wasn't the correct word, though the boy may have been religious it wasn't what was strange about him.

Left stumped mentally, Arjun smiled a bright flashy grin and attempted to make conversation. "What are you doing out here? You might have come out here to get time alone, and thats probally pretty hard with all the students walking through the gardens when its so beautifull out, you know, people sometimes don't realize their interupting a peacefull time. Its a bummer when you've almost reached that spot, and BAM its gone!"

Biting his lower lip, he mentally thought about how childhish he must sound. How jeuvinile he must be coming off, and towards some one who had known him, what 3 seconds? If first impressions really mattered, then he was going to really screw this one up.

Shen saw as the young man shook his head at something. Shen himself readjusted his own head slightly. It was one of his weaknessess. He lacked a face to express himself with, so in its place, Shen's slight shifts of the head in one direction or other had become what had been his most common facial expressions. When anyone asked him, Shen explained that the weight of his helmet made it uncomfortable for his neck to remain in any one position for an extended period. This was a half truth, and as such, Shen didn't berate or punish himself too harshly. Shen was just wondering what was passing to make the young man shake his head. However, it was none of Shen's buisness, so he would not ask.

Shen showed no reaction to the somewhat juvenile display from the young man. If anything, Shen found himself envying the fact that the young man was still so connected with a part of himself that was innocent, untouched, young. Shen had grown up quickly, it was how he had survived. Even when he was young, he remembered being more mature than most of his peers. At least that's how he wanted to remember himself as being. There were few around who would be able to dispute Shen's claim though. The Xorn clan had been slaughtered, and most of the people who had known the Xorns had been silenced in one manner or other.

"I came outside because I missed the feeling of the wind. A fan is a poor substitute, especially on a day like today," Shen found himself confessing. It was true enough. The cool sensation of a breeze was something that he had learned to appeciate as a youngster. Even though his home was cold most of the year, he had always found a breeze a pleasant thing. There were times when there were gails, but Shen had not minded those either. Growing up where he had, the winter winds were just an accepted part of life. He had been taught to see the beauty of them, and he also been taught to see around them. The wind was as nothing, all of this world was an illusion.

"As for total peace," Shen mentioned in an almost off handed way, "I doubt I would be able to obtain it." His voice was hollow and slightly raspy. The raspy quality of his voice was normal, he had been told that his voice sounded almost grating at times. The hollow quality was what betrayed him. The hollow quality contained a hint of resignation. Enlightenment, Nirvana, was not for him. He was not meant to attain it, at least not in this life time.
