Underneath the flourescent lights of the kitchen Arjun squinted slightly, dreadfully aware of how long he had been out walking in the dark night, His stomach didn't exactly grumble, yet sort of mumbled in quiet protest agaisn't the lack of food.

Crossing slowly across the kitchen towards the refridgerator Arjun opened the its door and smiled at the abundance of delicious food. Sleep had already entered the sides of his eyes, slowly adding weight to his eyelids. Apple? Turkey? What did he feel like eating? It was an easy question, yet so hard.

He could stare forever into the fridge, daydreaming or technically night dreeaming.

"hey there kid" said caleb from a corner. It wasn't normal for a student to be up this late... and he didn't know this one. "who are you?" asked Caleb of the boy. He stood and walked out of the shadows so that the boy woulld see who he was talking to. Caleb studied the boy long and hard. The kid was 15, maybe 16 at the most. that age felt so long ago to him, although he was barely 18.

"you're going to want the Turkey." said Caleb. "it tastes better, and the tryptophan will help you sleep later on, but for right now pull up a chair, and let's have us a conversation!" he wondered how much longer the poor boy would be able to stay up. He stood and began to make some coffee. "so," asked Caleb, "Who are you and where do you come from, and what can you do?"

Arjun turned quikly towards the man, unaware of who he was. Maybe he'd seen him once or twice, maybe not. He took the turkey out of the fridge and then walked towards the breadbox, answering the questions. "My name is Arjun Shaari. I'm fairly new here. I come from India....Bombay, India. What do you mean, what can I do?" His eyebrows raised in question.

"You are...student?" He questioned, his Indian accent coming through faintly. He'd been taught English from the the age of 6, and was getting fairly good at it.

Looking down, he quikly started making his sandwhich, well aware of how good the idea of coffee was. He would have a cup, if the man let him.

"haha, I'm no student," chuckled Caleb softly. "I'm an X-man." he poured two cups of coffee and handed one to the Indian boy before returning to making his own coffee. Being the typical Massachusetts kid, he liked his coffee with milk and sugar. He sat down and stared at the young Indian, contemplating. He seemed like a very serious and yet peaceful young man.

He sipped his coffee thoughtfully and asked once again "what can you do Arjun? your powers I mean?" he smiled encouragingly at the boy and sat watching him. he walked over the fridge and pulled out a small container of yogurt, stufying the contents before commiting to eating it. He stared back up and locked eyes with the boy. -come on kid- he thought. -show me what you got-...

Yes, it was late and any normal fourteen year old should have been in bed. However something woke one such fourteen year old and that something was a growling stomach. So here was the young catboy quietly walking exhausted toward what he assumed was the kitchen. He was so tired that his cat ears were in full view sticking out of his unruly dusty brown hair that had the signs of bed-head. His bowler lay upon the floor of his dorm.

Blue and white pajamas adorned him as he silently walked into the kitchen. Wiping the sleep from his strange hazel eyes, young Mittens found his way to the refrigerator. Sadly he couldn't see where he was going and bumped straight into the guy holding the yogurt. There sat the 4'5'' catboy so tired from lack of sleep that even his gray and black striped tail didn't flicker back in forth from the sudden fall. "I'm sorry," he muttered still sitting on the floor.

Arjun took the cup for only a moment, quikly placing the coffee down in attempt to show the man his powers. Generally, Arjun was a trustfull soul and it never occured to him that showing his powers was a risk. He was in a nice school, and Caleb seemed nice enough.

"This is what i do" He said, raising his hand and concentrating on the doorway. Shock erupted on the boys face as the young catboy walked threw the door, not only because he ran straight into Caleb and fell to the floor, but because he had the sudden thought that he had created Mittens from this illusion power. He had been trying to make the air full of crazy bee's and had almost succeeded too.

"Oh, are you alright....?" He said, moving forward to check.

awww hey there buddy!!!" said Caleb, and helped the young mittens to his feet. -man I guess no one is sleeping tonight- thought caleb to himself. "come on have a drink- how about some soda? want something to eat?" caleb enjoyed the cute little catboy. He felt a protectiveness, as if he was talking to his little brother. He sat down and watched the little boy reach into the fridge. While mittens was busy, he turned his attention back to arjun, staring intently at the boy. he was a mystery, and it made Caleb feel a bit uneasy.

He suddenly became aware of the time... 305 in the morning. All of them needed sleep... he stood and walked over to the window and stared out, waiting for either boy to speak. it wasn't like caleb to naturally feel attached to anyone, much less the little catboy. He turned and smiled at the two boys.. "so", he asked. "how is everything with you guys?"

Laser grid systems. Motion-sensor cameras. Heat-sensing technologies. None of that stood a chance against Riva's mad sneaking-back-inside-after-curfew skills. Well, maybe they did, but that particular realization didn't quite seem to dawn inside her beer-buzzed head. She was lucid enough not to go home with any weird strangers. And after a few well-placed elbow hyper-extensions, they seemed to get the point as well. Lesson of the day: when a super-powered girl says no, it means no.

She'd taken a cab up until a few blocks from the mansion, not keen on getting ugly looks from the driver upon sight of the oh-so-blasphemous school for mutants. She was in no mood anyway to deal with those prejudices, or punish tactless cabbies by pulling their vehicle apart for a funny look. From then on, she'd walked, taking a beaten but still used deer path through the woods and to the estate, soon enough sneaking towards the back porch and to the kitchen's back door. She was quite positive that by this hour everyone would be asleep. Because you know, the student and faculty body of a school for mutants is completely normal and follows the average sleep patterns of the rest of their timezone. But she was much too busy in removing and sanitizing her shoes of mud to notice the tell-tale fridge light and flickering shadows of fellow insomniacs inside, or a face looking out a window for that matter. Glossed lips pursed together as she took another drag from her cigarette, wiping her foot of excess mud and clay on the rim of the patio step, attending to detail with a convenient Kleenex and tossing the spent tissue into an adjacent trash can. Heading up to the back door, she gave her shoes a final wipe-down on the floor mat, opening the door and stepping inside...

Joy of joys. People.

The burning tip of her cigarette visibly dropped a few centimeters as her expression fell as well, clearly not thrilled in running into her fellow mansion occupants. It was obvious the red-head had been getting in her weekly club quota, clothing not exactly what one would call sleep-wear. Unless you wore make-up to sleep. And that only happened in soap operas.

"Hey y'all... There anymo' coffee?" Riva asked, ignoring the fact that she had what... three witnesses to her late curfew, and strode over to the coffee maker. Leave it to Riva to play off that sort of blunder... though there was a certain expression in those golden eyes that warned against snitching, her gaze flickering over each male as she took the coffee pot in one hand and an empty mug in another, pouring herself a cup. Cigarette still in her mouth, she debated between that or a cup of joe... and compromised, grasping the cancer stick between two fingers and taking a sip of coffee. Smart girl, she was.

((Haha, I've joined! And you can't stop me!... Unless you really don't want me here, that is. -sad puppy eyes-))

Mittens sat on the ground wondering why a tree would be in the middle of the kitchen before realizing that it was a person. He had all ready said sorry to said tree so he didn't bother again. Nor did he pay head to the Indian boy either. Of course he was all right but wasn't happy when the tree picked him up or how it had said 'Awww.' He hated attention and would have pointed it out if he could remember.

Walking silently to the fridge he opened it and stared at the light bulb. This was the time of night where one wondered if the bulb stayed on when the door closed. He wasn't so tired to find out by climbing in so he grabbed some lunch meat and cheese squares and the jug of chocolate milk. It was amazing how much the catboy could hold especially being so small.

At the counter still not paying attention to anyone he poured himself some milk. Then he unpeeled the cheese and rolled the squares in a pieces of lunch meat. Making five rolls total he grabbed one and took a bite. When he was about to take the second bite the girl came in. Staring, mouth gape, his full senses returned. "Why is everyone up so late?" For some reason Mittens tired brain didn't register that sneaking around late at night was something against the rules.

It was quite suddenly that Arjun's peacefull kitchen hideaway turned to a fast paced meeting place. But then again. where food is centered so are people, he thought to himself. The thought that the X-Man had never seen his powers was erased when the girl walked in front outside. She seemed to have been all made up for a night at the clubs or a party. Arjun really didn't know and was fine with not knowing. Was it his business anyways?

Smiling softly as he drank his coffee, Arjun surveyed the scene. Why was everyone up? It was a comical thought, one in which he amused himself with as he ate his turkey sandwhich.

"Hi..." he offered kindly. "I'm not sure i know any of your guys' names. I'm Arjun." He spoke to the newcomers, and Caleb as well. Being new was hard, but being a shy new kid would have been harder. Arjun was not shy, not in the least. Sliding his lips into a smile, he waited for a reply, hoping he was doing things right.

Caleb stared at Riva sternly. " Riva, you DO realize that as an x-man should turn you in?" especially since you're off partying..." caleb sighed, and then smiled. He wasn't going to turn anyone in. After all it was her choice to go and get trashed, not his. He looked over at mittens, and locked eyes with the little boy and smiled yet again. He really did feel as if he was looking t his surrogate little brother.

He looked out the window once again and returned to his thoughts. Riva was definately attractive, he thought suddenly. Though, he also knew that she had the ability to snap him in two pieces. It was funny How awkward this situation was: the new kid, a little catboy, The rebel, and the new x-man. he was beginning to get tired and yet he still felt a need to at the very least make sure mittens got to bed okay. he began to bend the eergy partcles around him out of sheer boredeom, so that the air in front of him was rippling as if it were water.

He yawned and sat down once again, staring at Arjun, who was now smiling at everyone.. -how is this kid so awake?- he thought. Caleb turned to mittens and asked "hey buddy shouln't you be getting to bed soon?"

The cat-boy's reaction definitely... wasn't expected. Riva was half tempted to ease his mouth close with a finger, but all his gawking prompted her to give herself a once-over. What, was she missing a shoe? "What y' lookin' at, kid?" she grumbled into her coffee mug, that sort of motherly, doting nature the boy produced around others not exactly... evident. Frankly, Riva hated being stared at, one of many, many pet peeves that provoked her very volatile nature. But she settled down somewhat, once it became clear that the little feline child wasn't even half awake and just realized the extent of insomnia the four were suffering.

"Guess the X-gene provokes insomnia. Go figure, eh petite chat?" she mused, coffee mug set on the counter with a soft clink as the cigarette found its way back to her lips. She had another, far more sarcastic comment in mind involving daylight savings time and the sun setting for six months--like it did in Alaska--but thought against it, figuring the young student would probably believe it in his half-awake state. Instead, she nodded a silent greeting towards Arjun, already pleased that he didn't question her late night arrival. Good boy. She contented herself in that brief moment in studying the kitchen table, or more specifically, the foodstuff arranged on it. She didn't know what was worse; processed ham and fake cheese rolls, or a meal as heavy as a turkey sandwich. She was quite content with the pleasant buzz the night's intake of alcohol was producing in her head, thank you very much. Now, top that with a Red Bull, and she'd be all set.

But pleasant thoughts were pushed aside, as Caleb thought it would be cute to play the authoritarian. Not that she had any major problems with authority, but she sure as hell wasn't going to put up with that from someone her exact age, as evidenced by the rather venomous glare she shot at the rookie Xman, a soft plume of smoke exiting the corner of her mouth as she sighed. Her drinking habits were an improvement, at least compared to the other habits she had prior to arriving at the Institute. And she wasn't trashed. She was buzzed. Riva wasn't exactly fond of hangovers and tried her best not to reach those points.

"Funny. Guess I won't be sharin' m' dime bag with you anytime soon," she replied, taking a final drag of her cigarette before passing by Caleb--though left enough room between herself and those wave... things...--and throwing the butt into the sink, extinguishing any potential fire hazard with a single bead of water on the metal basin before flicking it into the trash. Was her confession serious? It was difficult to tell, Riva's ability to play off nonchalance rather good. Frankly, she was curious as to what kind of reputation she'd garnered around her contemporaries, despite not really talking to anyone beyond the simple greetings between acquaintances.

"Hi..." he offered kindly. "I'm not sure i know any of your guys' names. I'm Arjun." Ahh, a change of topic. Quite convenient. Riva strode back over to the fridge and checking its contents for her energy drink of choice. "M' name's Riva," she called, well-near the point of climbing into the fridge to get at her Red Bull. But the mountainous excursion wasn't necessary, Riva finally pulling out a highly coveted can of the European liquefied energy. "Haven' see you 'round de Institute.... Jet lag?" she asked, popping the can open and taking a sip, then finally helping herself to a seat at the table, studying Mittens's ears a moment. "That insomnia kills... an' why you up, Xman?" Glancing back at Caleb, Riva smirked. "Don' you got an example to make?"

Still staring at Riva, Mittens finished off his ham-n-cheese roll. ~What's with this girl?~ his tired brain managed to think. Living in a group home had taught him that to survive being troublemaker was necessary but this girl wasn't what he expected. The cigarette was messing with his senses; the smell seemed stronger but at least he wasn't allergic.

For second the little catboy watched Caleb pace the kitchen floor then settle. That was when he noticed the air rippling. The sun wasn't out so why would there be a haze. Rubbing his eyes hardly he attempted to wipe what he saw away. Looking back up the haze was still there. Great now he was seeing things not there on top of hearing disembodied voices. The only thing that distracted him was Riva and her reactions so once again he stared at her.

"Mittens," he simply said to Arjun question. Being tired he had forgotten to correct himself. It wouldn't matter if they knew his name as Robert or not. People would call him Mittens regardless. Rubbing his eyes once more he then began to brush the bottom of his right cat ear much like a cat. "Yes, a catnap sounds nice," replying to Caleb without even telling him that he should be caring about the others as well.

Slowly his eyes closed and his head fell towards the table. With one last look toward Riva he was about to go to sleep right in the middle of the kitchen. But something caught his attention. Wide awake for the first time since he entered to get a midnight snack he realized how tall everyone was. Riva especially put him on edge. "Why must they all be taller then me?" murmured little Mittens to himself.

Arjun was starting to feel awkward with these people. Not because one was an X-men, one was obviously a rebel and pretty bad ass, and the last was very cat like. None of those mattered to him, but the fact that he seemed to be a total outsider even amongst this diverse crowd just got to him.

Jet lag? She obviously was talking about his recent coming to the mansion. How did he feel about all this...?

Stepping out of his thoughts and away from his silent ponderings to make yet another attempt to be social. "Nice to meet you Riva, I just got here from India." Turning to Caleb and the wierd wave things he said, "Its strange to see someone who is so in control of their powers. I'm envious. How long have you been training?"

He felt as if he was on the edge of a plank, standing just above the roaring ocean in his blue boxers and white undershirt, when in reality, the plank was a linoleum kitchen floor and the roaring ocean was the opinion of these three people.

Caleb looked around. It Was getting Very late. His eyelids were drooping slightly now. Stifling a yawn, he stared intently at Arju. "I've been learning to control my powers for about 4 years now. It's still a work in progress, but I'll eventually be able to master it." He stared at the linoleum floor, trying to wake himself up enough to gather the strength to head off to bed. He wondered how he was ever going to wake up enough to go down to the training facility. he figured that he needed to get these kids to bed soon before anyone else woke up. He smiled at the comment Riva had made. She really was a smartass, her reputation preceeded her. the thought made him laugh out loud. -these people are going to think I'm a psycho.- he thought to himself.

"okay kids. It's about time you all got to bed. Arjun, Mittens, bed time." he walked over to the door and stared back. "come on kids hop to it!" he turned around and stared back at Riva. "I suggest you go to bed too, before anyone else wakes up. After all, you don't want to end up in trouble. Oh sorry, I forgot you live for trouble." he said the words with enough sarcasm to make even Riva Proud. Smirking to himself, he walked out of the room and headed for bed.
