Even a mug of coffee and a can of Red Bull couldn’t hold Riva’s paramount yawn at bay, setting the can onto the tabletop as she indulged in a dainty little stretch of her shoulders. It wasn’t so much that she was tired… but damn, couldn’t these guys come up with better conversation?

Oh, so how long have you been at school?

Oh, what are your powers?

Ooh, you’re an X-Man? How totally cool!

Riva had to resist the urge to gag, or make some other rude gesture that hinted at her… unamused status. The grim line that shaped her lips and the faint arch of an eyebrow were enough to convey that emotion anyway, Riva leaning back in her chair as she settled with just watching the low levels of interaction occur between her other schoolmates.

“Mittens?”

Well, she was paying enough attention, having caught the cat-boy’s name. Or nickname, hopefully. Hell, she couldn’t imagine how his nurse kept a straight face if she had to scribble that name on a birth certificate. A sly grin crept onto her lips, one that said she wouldn’t soon be forgetting the pet name or letting him do so either, Riva just barely able to contain her snicker. Instead, she drowned it with another mouthful of Red Bull. She hadn’t really considered whether or not her smoking bothered anyone in the room, or perhaps affected them. And had they asked her to put it out… she would have. Riva had a few crippling allergies of her own. But it did the ‘bad-ass’ no good to let everyone know she was allergic to something as dull as a cashew.

At Arjun’s reply, she only nodded. She figured as much, judging from his accent. But regardless of where he hailed from, he didn’t seem like much of a conversationalist. One of those shy types, she assumed. And Riva had no time for shy people.

But she wasn’t quite ready to head to bed yet. Not that she was tired—Riva always found she had some spare energy at the end of the day, especially if it was to drag herself into the warm comfort of her bed. Problem was, she didn’t have a room to herself anymore. Well, that’s what the dorm roster read. And Riva had been doing a spectacular job in avoiding the new roomie and the forced pleasantries associated with introductions.

Rude? Maybe. But Riva did these things without really intending to.

"Why must they all be taller then me?" murmured little Mittens to himself.

“Drink more milk?” she replied nonchalantly, voicing the first thing off the top of her head. “How old are ya anyway? Twelve? Thirteen? Y’ got plenty o’ time t’ grow.” At that, she allowed herself to smile somewhat reassuringly, if you consider a smirk comforting. Looking back to Caleb and his half-hearted efforts to round everyone up to bed, Riva only arched a brow, finishing off her drink. She only smirked at his repartee.

“An X-Man and a nana. Impressive,” she laughed, taking the aluminum can and balling it up between her palms as though it were a mere sheet of paper, until the metal was a compressed little ball. She placed it in the middle of the kitchen table as though it were an ornament, rising from her chair and smoothing a small wrinkle on her jeans. “Well, if y’all gonna turn in, might as well do the same. Ain’ no fun talkin’ to m’self,” she said, though there hadn’t been much talking to begin with. “Anywho, them hallways are dark. Can’t let y’all wander through them alone.” Not to mention, if she got caught wandering about in the wee hours of the night, she preferred to have a few people around to leave the blame and ditch. Diversionary tactics for a clean getaway. You didn’t have to be an X-Man to learn those tricks. Just a teen up to no good.

Mittens just followed the conversations flowing through the room with very sleepy eyes. The comfort of his bed beckoned him like a light in a storm. However he stayed right where he stood watching Riva closely. Yet as his eyelids once again drooped he knew full well bed was where he belonged.

“Drink more milk?” Eyes shooting fully opened the catboy stared once more at the taller woman. "Didn't you ever think that I, being cat-like, might not handle milk well," he replied cutely as his small hand grabbed the glass full of chocolate milk. Guzzling it he answered her second question.

"I'm fourteen. But growing also relies on blood. Tall parents mean tall offspring and the same goes for short parents. As for me my dad was tall while my mom was short," he said in a raised tone. Being tired his actions could be blamed on sleepiness. For some reason it seemed as though the little catboy meant every word.

Caleb’s call for bed made Mittens jump and he turned to face him. "You have no right to tell us what to do... tree," he yawned as his tiny feet told him to comply and head up to bed. Following slowly behind Riva he felt as though turning into cat and curling up in a corner would be nice. Except he trudged on until he felt as though he could go no more and sat upon the kitchen floor near the door. "Leave me," he let out through another yawn as he stretched his arms in the air. His tail began to tap the linoleum floor in protest of lack of sleep.

Arjun gave silent nods to everyone. He was clearly still different, clearly still an outcast. Fine, he thought. He would work harder. He'd talk to the headmistress about how to be social. It wasn't that these mutants were being mean, or unkind or even really hinting too hard about his awkwardness. He could just tell, as most people can, that he just wasn't accepted.

Putting his dishes into the dishwasher and quikly cleaning up the small mess he'd made, Arjun wished everyone a quik goodnight. Then he walked out of the kitchen and down the shadowy hallways and into his bedroom.

He'd work harder.

"Didn't you ever think that I, being cat-like, might not handle milk well?"

Riva watched the cat boy drink his chocolate milk with mild amusement, a bit unsure of what had suddenly possessed him to make such a snarky little comment... she meant that in the best possible way. Really.

"Sassy cat, ain' cha?" she said, though not in the normally annoyed manner when she got a bit of sarcasm dished back at her, the young girl laughing to herself. That laughter died off, though, as she spotted Arjun hurrying out of the kitchen, bright yellow eyes trailing behind. Weird kid. He hadn't said much, his quiet retreat from the kitchen leaving Riva with the impression of yet another introverted student. She didn't like those type of people that you had to prod and torture into conversation. Not that she treated them any differently to anyone else--no one was immune to her snarky sense of humor. She just didn't deal with them.

"I'm fourteen. But growing also relies on blood. Tall parents mean tall offspring and the same goes for short parents. As for me my dad was tall while my mom was short."

She couldn't help but be reminded of that peculiar way little kids handled themselves around grown-ups, cute words spoken with that funny air of knowing in hopes of being taken seriously. "Y' got that right, mon ami. Though I gotta say, y' pretty ahead o' the game. Y' pretty big fo' a house cat."

If that was Riva's idea of comfort.... Lord help us.

In that short time, the rest of the insomniacs had filed out of the kitchen by some inexplicable form of osmosis, but Riva still hung around to simply watch Mittens, curiosity piqued by the kid. Really, all it took was just one sentence to change Riva's perception about people. And that cute little comment earlier, whether deliberately thought-out or just some impromptu Freudian slip, made him all the more interesting. She waited for him to exit, planning to simply trail behind Mittens and see if he said something else funny. But he didn't even make it to the doorway before he plopped onto the kitchen floor.

"Leave me."

All right, so maybe the cat ears were growing on her. She walked up to Mittens from behind, hands slipping into the pockets of her jeans as she leaned forward, peering into Mitten's weary little face from above.

"No man left behind, kid. C'mon now. The floor ain' no place t' sleep. Unless y' want the roaches crawlin' into y' ears later t'night," she said, nudging his back with a soft prod of her knee. She walked around him, quite careful not to step on his tail, leaning against the doorway. "Lead the way, Napoleon."

Mittens' hazel-like eyes followed Arjun as he abruptly left the kitchen. If he had known that Arjun had felt unwelcome he would have at last been friendlier. Actually considering how tired he was his attitude from when he was completely awake was exactly the opposite. That's right the little catboy would be the one in the corner and not the one who was talking back to a much older teen.

His brain was between fully awake and completely tired. His scenes diluted and hearing unreliable. Had Riva just called him a 'sassy cat' or were his ears mishearing? Yet he yawned and nodded with no care. The call of a nice warm bed grew ever stronger. So of course he got to his feet walking slowly and once again absentmindedly agreeing to the taller woman's comment. He had been about ready to state that his feline form was between that of a kitten and a full grown cat, more so to the kitten than the cat. However he was holding back that part of his powers for some unexplained reason.

The little catboy felt Riva's prodding knees. His wary face looked up at her and smiled tiredly. Placing his right hand on the kitchen floor he pushed himself up off the ground. Swaying slightly he led the way to the dorms half asleep knowing full well that his comfortable bed was waiting. As soon as he entered his room he'd transform and curl up in cat form. The joys that would come but he had to get there first.

Turning slightly so he could see Riva from the corner of his eye, he smiled. "Napoleon, good one," he chuckled as his tiny feet pounded toward the confines of his dorm.
