Not an X-Man yet not quite a Brotherhood member? Several characters fit into this, so it occurred to us that maybe some of us malcontents need a new place where we can save the world in our own fashion. So, in comes X-Factor. Now, in its earliest incarnation Cyclops, Angel, Marvel Girl, Beast and Iceman used X-Factor as a way to rescue out of control mutants by presenting it as an anti-mutant organization to round them up and dispose of them. It was a fiasco, thanks to the machinations of their business manager Cameron Hodge, in reality the founder of The Right, an rabid group of bigots that made the FOH look like the League of Tolerance. But, a version of that could be fun, with current cast taking the part of the original five. Or The later version saw the government sponsoring a group of X-Men b-listers, including Havok, Polaris, Strong Guy, Multiple Man and Wolfsbane, in what was essentially X-Men lite. They fought villains and themselves and generally had a less strict and scholastic environment to function in. Or The current X-Factor has a film noir feeling as Jamie Madrox leads his team in detective agency mysteries in the wake of M-Day, in former Mutant Town as the world adjusts to the madness of the missing mutant powers and the threat of the insane Quicksilver's ability to 'restore' his people to greatness. So, here's the real question. Would anyone be interested in having this team as sort of a new group? I know that Havok, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch are interested in it. Anyone else? |

Rosie had seen her fair share -- more than her fair share, actually -- of hurt and pain. However, this did not mean that she was impervious to the arch enemy of small children: skinned knees. It had happened when she was skipping -- or trying to skip -- down the garden path, looking for butterflies. Her foot had caught a loose rock and she'd gone sprawling; Rosie's natural clumsiness combined with this meant disaster in general. Sobbing at the top of her little lungs, Rosie limped down the hallway towards the room she knew belonged to Scott, knowing that he would make the boo-boo all better. She halted in front of the room and found that the door was cracked open. Taking that as a sign that she didn't have to knock -- and anyway, her sobs were more than enough to give her away -- Rosie pushed the door farther open and toddled inside. "Papa!" She called, looking around for her surrogate father. The word had only slipped, but Rosie let the mistake go. Anyway, she decided, the word fit him more than it had her real father. She sat down on the floor, staring miserably at her skinned knees. "I...it hurts..." |

Punches from the Punch Dimension

Scott sat on his bed, folding his laundry in precise squares. He honestly did not have many clothes. After being orphaned, the State Home had really not given him much, how could they? So many children. By the time he came to Xavier's his powers had developed and the ocassional shopping trips the Professor had taken him on had been a misery. Unable to tell what color outfits he was buying, afraid that he might lose his glasses while trying them on. So, he'd rather gotten out of the joy of new clothes, and was content with a few dark colored shirts, a few white ones, two dark suits, some dark slacks, some jeans, two sets of pajamas, three sets of work out clothes and enough underwear and socks to last two weeks without doing laundry. Throw in some sweaters and winter clothes, and Scott's closet was still half empty. He always did his own laundry, one of his many issues. He did not like other people to touch his clothing, really, having learned in the orphanage the value of keeping track of one's belongings. So, he sat on his bed, taking care of his things, and idly watching a show on Discovery Channel about World War II aviation, dry to some, but extremely interesting to him. The sound of sobbing suddenly alerted him, and he got to his feet. He knew the sound of that cry by heart now. "Rosie?" he called. His door swung open and the toddle hobbled into the room, tear streaked and clutching her knee. "Papa! I...it hurts..." She sat down on the floor, unhappily. He registered her injury quite a bit before he heard her words, and he picked her up, taking care not to hurt her. "Awww, poor baby." he said, "You got an owie, huh? Well, let's get it all cleaned up for you." He carried her into the adjoining bathroom and sat her on the counter. Taking a washcloth and dabbing at the scrape, he saw that it wasn't too bad, but he couldn't quite be sure, his limited color vision somewhat filtering the image. ::Jean, Honey, can you come up to my room?:: he thought, ::Rosie scraped her knee and I need your eyes to make sure its ok before I bandage it up.:: Then, to the little girl he said, "Jeannie's coming up to see if it's ok, but I think the only thing to do is cut it off and give you a new leg." His voice was clearly teasing. "Maybe we'll just give you a..." It suddenly hit him. "Did... Did you call me Papa?" He smiled, and said, softly, "I like that, Rosie Girl. It's nice. I'd hope you'd be happy here with us." |

“Knock, knock.” Jean announced as she walked into Scott’s room, looking for her two favorite people. She walked over to join Scott in the bathroom, Rosie sitting on the counter; she was sniffling a bit and tear tracks showed on her cheeks. “Did someone call for a second opinion?” Jean asked, coming in to stand next to Scott. “My big Rosie Girl,” Jean caressed the little girl’s plump cheek and cupped her chin. “How does it feel now?” She asked peering at the scrape. To Scott, she said, “doesn’t look too bad … and I don’t see any dirt or black spots. Would you like to bandage?” Jean asked and retrieved the First Aid kit from the cabinet; it floated down next to Rosie and the cover flipped open. While Scott got what he needed, she moistened another washcloth and started wiping the tears from Rosie’s cheeks. As always, Jean and Scott worked well together; she kept Rosie’s eyes looking at her while Scott bandaged her knee. If they were lucky, he would be done before she knew it was happening. “You hurt your knee outside… and you managed to get all the way here… my goodness, we have a strong, brave girl, Scott.” Jean spoke in an amazed and proud voice, letting Rosie know she’d something really great. “He certainly does act like a good papa; doesn’t he, Rosie?” |

It still surprised Rosie that she now had people that she could trust, but the surprise didn't keep her from clinging to Scott as he carried her into the bathroom and gently deposited her on the counter. He was being especially gentle about her boo-boo, and hadn't even minded that she called him papa. Well, then, that was his new name. "I...I fell." The little girl whimpered, doing her best to avoid looking at the skinned knee. "Y-you c'n fix it?" His gentle teasing made a slight smile appear on her face, and she tried her best to stop the tears that kept coming. The arrival of Jean was enough to make the little smile grow a little, and Rosie leaned towards the woman slightly. "Mama....I fell..." She repeated, worried eyes going back to her knee. Like with Scott, the term of endearment was automatic, an instinct like that of any other child to call their caretaker "Mommy" or "Daddy". Blushing a little at the praise, incredibly pleased, Rosie managed to stop crying, though she still watched the actions of the adults in slight worry. Jean was taking her mind off everything, talking to her and drying her tears with a washcloth, and before she knew it her knee was clean and bandaged. "It di'n't hurt." Rosie whispered, in slight awe as she turned her knee this way and that, peering at the band-aid. Finally she looked up at them, reaching out with both hands for an embrace. "You's the best." She stated, not a single doubt about it in her voice. |

Scott glanced at Jean when Rosie called her Mama. ::You ok with that?:: he thought at her anxiously, though he turned his face back to Rosie, smiling as if he hadn't care in the world. It was going to be a strange thing though. There was going to be a problem when Nate found out that the little girl was calling them Mama and Papa, especially since Jean was unable to cope with their unusually produced son and all the complications he presented. Scott, in the middle of it all, was going to have to find a way to join this instantly dysfunctional pre-fabricated family. Months ago, he'd been alone, run from the mansion in misery and selfish anger, after the death of the Professor, seeking something out in the world that he thought he'd been missing. How amazing that it was all waiting for him here, and once Alex was here with them... My God, it was possible to be a mutant and be happy all at once. Who would have thought it. Once the band aid was applied, the tears were stopped, and Scott and Jean were proclaimed 'the best.' Scott gave his girls a loving hug, wrapping one arm around each in a lopsided triangle of happy contentment, and he felt like his heart was about to burst, a feeling that Scott Christopher Summers thought was beyond his limited understanding of emotion. "Hey," he said, a bit of a hitch in his voice that he tried to hide with one of his uneasy attempts at a joke, "Enough of this mushiness. There's only one real way to test if Rosie's knee is ok, and that's the ice cream test. If she can make it aaaaaaall the way to the kitchen for ice cream, then her knee is good to go." |

Jean widened her eyes slightly from going from Jeannie to mama, but she only hesitated a moment. :: Yeah :: she thought back to Scott :: I’m okay with that. :: She smiled at Rosie… her daughter. They hovered over Rosie, tending to her… being her parents, as the implications sank in. Of course, it had been building even since Rosie had come to them; she shared Jean’s room… she had powers like hers… Jean was the first person Rosie saw in the morning and the last person before sleeping. She was actually more than okay with being Rosie’s mama, it was like a whole new part of life was opening up. “Mama is proud of her big girl,” she said when Rosie it didn’t hurt, and kissed Rosie’s cheek. She chuckled as Scott announced they were going down to the kitchen for ice cream. The chuckle turned into a full laugh as Rosie raced from the room as fast as her little legs would carry her. Jean and Scott automatically linked hands as they followed Rosie, who would stood down the hall, impatiently waiting for them to catch up as though she were about to burst. :: It isn’t as though I love her any more than Nate… you know that, don’t you? :: She sent to Scott as they followed Rosie to the kitchen. |
