Retaliating with a snowball now would've looked petty on Duane's part -- and he wasn't the sort to play around like that.

Both Jayson and Rogue were friendly enough -- and that errant bit of snow was all but forgotten.

"Interesting," Jayson smirked. "So basically you make the air go boom. Probably something to do with the conversion of gases," she guessed before falling silent.

"Mh," Duane simply replied with a flat-lipped utter, nodding at the redhead's deduction, cigarette held between his lips. "Hydrogen sorta does that."

Smart girl.

"I can turn things to stone," was all she said.

One of Duane's heavy brows lifted, eyes looking right back at her. "Sounds pretty handy -- can you turn them back from stone?" he asked, questioning a bit -- but not really getting into too much detail.

For lots of mutants, it was a sensitive issue.

Rogue, for example.

"Mah power has ta do with skin contact." she looked down at her hand before clenching it.

Those hazel eyes passed back to the Mississippi girl, watching her hand clench -- evidently something she didn't want to go into detail about.

"Seems it's cryptic night up on the roof tonight," he uttered in his deep bass tone, exhaling a bit of smoke, trying to break a bit of the floating tension with a bit of trite humor.

He wasn't exactly the sort who cracked jokes much of the time.

"So how'd ya like the mansion so far?"

Flat lips -- and a distant glance, thinking the question over, as those brows of his furrowed.

"Big ... got a bit lost in it a few times," he simply said, giving the redhead a witty little smirk. "But, hell, it's mostly just me goin' between the training facilities, out to the garage ... 'n back at the dorms for sleep."

A pause, to take a drag of his smoke, before he spoke again.

"Hell of an improvement from where I came from."

It made a girl wonder, most likely -- all those tattoos, that hardened expression -- guys like him didn't exactly come from prep school or happy nuclear family environments.

Just where did this big character hide his roots?

"Ya have a name?" she pointed her thumb to the girl next to her, "She's Jayson." she said then brought her hand and pointed her index finger towards herself. "An' ah'm Rogue."

A look back to Rogue -- he must've seemed like a complete asshole, not introducing himself before they did.

Prison manners. He knew them, he just hadn't been as practiced with them as others in proper society.

"It's Duane," he muttered out deeply, glance to her green eyes before a pulled smirk slid along his rugged features. "But if you're gonna go with this codename bullshit the faculty's playin' with ... Megaton."

Made sense, given his abilities -- and his intimidating stature.

He noticed Jayson's shiver at the cool winter air -- technically, he could warm the surrounding area for them, without a problem, but that would involve a fairly loud explosion in the process -- and aside from little things like property damage and Captain Asshole-One-Eye throwing a hissy fit to end all fits, it'd wake up just about everyone in Westchester County.

Really, Duane could care less about some rules, but there were lines you just didn't cross.

The lines that could land you back in a Wisconsin max pen, for example.

"Chilly out," he grunted out softly, smoky breath mingling with the cool air to make a drifting wisp of condensation. "Maybe I oughta put some beer on the window sill. ... Probably cool it faster 'n the fridge, anyway."

He stood from his lean against the open window, muscled arms lifting away from the wooden sill -- a sign that he was going to head indoors -- and, turning around for a moment, he lifted a brow, glancing back over his shoulder at the two of them.

"Comin' inside?" He asked, using his index finger and thumb to flick what remained of his cigarette out the window, embers dissipating into the cover of snow. "Ain't exactly lookin' forward to look for two roof girlscicles early in the morning. Bet your ass they'll make me carry y'down, too."

A smirk. Maybe it was thinly-veiled concern, yes -- but escape from certain annoying characters didn't warrant frostbite.

"But of course they turn back," Jayson laughed. "It wouldn't be fun if people stayed stone forever." She grinned before frowning. Why was she being so cryptic with her powers? Maybe it was because this dude surprised her so much she almost fell off the roof.

When Rogue spoke of her powers though Jayson’s full concentration shifted to the southerner. "No kidding," she blinked. Her face not revealing any emotions or the thoughts she was currently thinking. Then suddenly a kind smile appeared on her lips. "Well, hello. I'm Jayson Mink. I've wanted to meet you for awhile," she said reintroducing herself while she held out her own gloved hand.

Rogue had been correct in one notion. Stating her powers people would automatically know who she was if they had heard of her before. But Jayson wasn’t slinking away. From other's rumors of this girl's particular powers had been heard, to various degrees. But who cared about what they said. It was the red head's philosophy to meet people of rumors first hand and make friends with them. With Rogue, though, she wanted to be friends with not because of such a petty reason but because... "My powers work that way too."

Big ... got a bit lost in it a few times," [Megaton] simply said, giving the redhead a witty little smirk. "But, hell, it's mostly just me goin' between the training facilities, out to the garage ... 'n back at the dorms for sleep."

Shifting her attention back to Megaton Jayson gave one last smile to Rogue. "Sounds much like my day," she said to him. "But I tend to forget that we have a garage here. But the gym's nice. 'specially since I need to work out each day." Was there slight malice in her voice? "I agree that the mansion is kinda large. I found myself memorizing the art work to find my way around when I first got here. Getting lost on the way to class was the worst."

So the tall stranger did have a name. Hmm... The name Duane was... so familiar to the point that she knew of three men named Duane all of who lived on the same street back at home. Come to think of it? "I'm beginning to wish I never came from a small town hidden far away from civilization."

"But if we are going by codenames, I'm Rock-solid," she said giving a full tooth grin. "And yes it is cold. Can we get inside and maybe we can have hot chocolate,” then looking back at Rogue, "Come on I bet you are cold. I make mean a mean cup of cocoa." Duane’s bit about cooling beer was totally toned out. No way was she going to comment on that.

Hell of an improvement? Must have had a crap life like she had. But Rogue wasn't one to pry in with someone's past. Heck, she wouldn't want someone to do that to her. Her past was something else, she'd hurt many people. And for some of these people to know how her past was.....well, lets just say she would receive dirty looks besides with how her powers work.

But then as a sudden shock, not trying to show the expression on her face. Turning to face Jayson when she said, "Well, hello. I'm Jayson Mink. I've wanted to meet you for awhile," Rogue was about to look at her like she was a full. "Really?" it sounded like she was confused with the way her voice sounded. "Why?" her own question echoed in her mind. Why did she want to meet Rogue for awhile? It was a bit of a puzzlement in her own mind.

Then her mind drifted back when they continued to talk about other things. Such as the thing everyone was getting use to having, codenames. Ah, codenames. Yep, thats what Rogue stuck to. She wasn't one to say her real name and she was going to keep it that way. For most of her life, she had been known as a Rogue. And she was going to keep it that way. So what if someone thought it was bullshit with codenames. But at least there was someway she could keep part of herself hidden from everyone.

It was at this time Rogue just mainly listened to the other two talk. But when it was mentioned about getting out of the code. Rogue didn't notice the cold chill that flowed through her body. Standing up, she dusted the small piece of snow off of her that was on her jacket. "Actually, didn't notice it till ya said somethin'." she smiled to both as she followed them in. Making sure her book was stuffed away in her pocket for later. That was if she was to be all by herself. But it seemed tonight was not going to be one of them. What a nice change for Rogue.

A crap life wasn't even the start of it.

Seeing your own mother take a bullet from your father, combined with living from shelter to shelter ever since childhood was likely to fuck with one's psyche.

Considering that Duane came out of it unscathed aside for some minor character and personal problems was a miracle.

As for his codename -- it wasn't like Duane didn't like it, or had something against anonymity.

Cyclops just seemed to emphasize it -- and, in Duane's eyes, anything Scott touched was a load of bull.

"But of course they turn back," Jayson laughed. "It wouldn't be fun if people stayed stone forever."

A half smile -- it seemed like the most she'd likely get from his heavy, rugged features, though it certainly wasn't a bad thing. "Guess I'm just used to mutants with all sorts of problem powers," he uttered some. " ... Part of my upbringin', maybe."

Sounds much like my day," she said to him.

"Don't think I'd survive here without the garage," he said lowly. " ... Got two muses in this world." His hand patted the wooden side of his acoustic guitar, signaling it as one of them. "And mechanics ... sorta my outlet, too," he continued. "Motorcycles especially. Not really trusted here with anythin', but I've got some cleanup and maintenance duty the followin' week out there."

He came across as the biker sort. Burly, brusque, and gruntish.

Was it really that much of a stretch to see him riding a Harley?

As the girls tagged along, Duane walked a few strides into the hall, keeping pace with them -- and he glanced back to Rogue, listening to her surprise at Jayson's interest in meeting her.

Her mention of the cold, though, made him smile a bit.

"Actually, didn't notice it till ya said somethin'." she smiled to both as she followed them in.

"Hell, you should've said somethin' before me," he said, a whisper of a chuckle lifting his tone. "Southern belle like you. I'm from Green Bay. Might as well plant my ass in the Arctic Circle, it's so damn cold there."

Despite his manner, it felt ... good, getting a bit of rapport with other young mutants staying here.

It sure beat the endless chemistry struggle between him and Captain Corny.

Jayson smiled. Rogue was acting flabbergasted about someone actually wanting to meet her. Was it that much of a surprise? “Why, you ask?” she repeated. “No reason really I just wanted to and that is all.” Not really meaning to she waved her gloved hand and brought her attention back to Megaton.

“All sorts of power problems, eh” the stone turner couldn’t help but say with a laugh. “Breaking dishware is not that bad after all.” Her frame began to shake as a massive amount of giggles overcame her. Maybe she took Duane’s words the wrong way. To her they were funny or maybe she was reacting to his half smile. Now that, sadly, seemed out of place. Well, with hope it wouldn’t matter.

“So the garage and the guitar are your muses. It’s not as though I don’t like the garage,” Jayson said after a minute. There was no chance of being able speak through her giggles. “I never really had a need to learn anything about mechanics. Maybe I would have if my parents were still alive. However, now my muse is the Californian grape. One day if I get enough money I’m going to open my own winery.”

The red head followed after Megaton. She listened as Rogue said she didn’t notice the cold. The cold was something Jayson couldn’t help but notice. It was, well, just too cold for her liking. “Hmm… so I’m going to make the best tasting hot chocolate you’ll ever taste then. That should warm us all up.”

Rogue had listened much like she did earlier. It was what Rogue did a lot with her time, just listened to people about anything and everything that they would mumble. It wasn't like she was able to hear people that would actually talk to her that involved more then one sentence.

“Why, you ask?” she repeated. “No reason really I just wanted to and that is all.”

She shrugged her shoulder. "Just wonderin'. Most people tend ta keep their distance from meh." she shrugged again and just shook her head at herself as Jayson continued on talking to Megaton. Talking about the garage. The southerner knew it was there, she worked on a few cars here and there. Something that she slowly started to learn on her own. But it really wasn't the place to bring up about it. It seemed like it was the right time but in Rogue's eyes, it wasn't.

"Hell, you should've said somethin' before me," he said, a whisper of a chuckle lifting his tone. "Southern belle like you. I'm from Green Bay. Might as well plant my ass in the Arctic Circle, it's so damn cold there."

She smiled a little as her green eyes lifted from the ground toward the other mutant. "Yeah, ah guess ah should have. But from bein' 'ere so long. Ah guess ya get use ta it." she shrugged again. And when your thinking about anything and everything, that clouds your judgment too.

“Hmm… so I’m going to make the best tasting hot chocolate you’ll ever taste then. That should warm us all up.”

Then she glanced over at Jayson when she spoke. "Yeah, that should be what we all need." she smiled a little more. "Can't beat that on a cold night like this." she said as she was the last one to walk into the school.
